Abstract In this paper, we discuss the development of robot use cases in an elderly care facility in the context of exploring the method of Integrative Social Robotics (ISR) when used on top of a user-centered design approach. Integrative Social Robotics is a new proposal for how to generate responsible, i.e. culturally and ethically sustainable, social robotics applications. Starting point for the discussion are the five principles that characterize an ISR approach, which are discussed in application to the three use cases for robot support in a Danish elderly care facility developed within the smooth project. The discussion by an interdisciplinary design team explores what attention to the five principles of ISR can offer for use case development. We report on the consequences of this short-time exposure to the basic ideas of ISR for use case development and discuss the value of approaching robot development from an ISR perspective.

AbstractThis article discusses the process of developing robot use cases using large-scale ethnographic observation as a starting point. In particular, during 296 hours of ethnographic observation of the workflows at seventeen departments at Odense University Hospital, 607 processes were described and subsequently annotated. The ethnographic method provided rich, contextually situated data that can be searched and categorized for use case development, which is illustrated on an example use case, describing the process and illustrating the type of data elicited, discussing the problems encountered and providing downloadable tools for other researchers interested in similar approaches to use case development.

Software size estimation represents a complex task, which is based on data analysis or on an algorithmic estimation approach. Software size estimation is a nontrivial task, which is important for software project planning and management. In this paper, a new method called Actors and Use Cases Size Estimation is proposed. The new method is based on the number of actors and use cases only. The method is based on stepwise regression and led to a very significant reduction in errors when estimating the size of software systems compared to Use Case Points-based methods. The proposed method is independent of Use Case Points, which allows the elimination of the effect of the inaccurate determination of Use Case Points components, because such components are not used in the proposed method.

As the world is striving to recover from the shockwaves triggered by the COVID-19 crisis, all hands are needed on deck to transition towards green recovery and make peace with nature as prerequisites of a global sustainable development pathway. In this paper, we examine the blockchain hype, the gaps in the knowledge, and the tools needed to build promising use cases for blockchain technology to accelerate global efforts in this decade of action towards achieving the SDGs. We attempt to break the “hype cycle” portraying blockchain’s superiority by navigating a rational blockchain use case development approach. By prototyping an SDG Acceleration Scorecard to use blockchain-enabled solutions as SDG accelerators, we aim to provide useful insights towards developing an integrated approach that is fit-for-purpose to guide organizations and practitioners in their quest to make informed decisions to design and implement blockchain-backed solutions as SDG accelerators. Acknowledging the limitations in prototyping such tools, we believe these are minimally viable products and should be considered as living tools that can further evolve as the blockchain technology matures, its pace of adoption increases, lessons are learned, and good practices and standards are widely shared and internalized by teams and organizations working on innovation for development.

This article surveys reinforcement learning approaches in social robotics. Reinforcement learning is a framework for decision-making problems in which an agent interacts through trial-and-error with its environment to discover an optimal behavior. Since interaction is a key component in both reinforcement learning and social robotics, it can be a well-suited approach for real-world interactions with physically embodied social robots. The scope of the paper is focused particularly on studies that include social physical robots and real-world human-robot interactions with users. We present a thorough analysis of reinforcement learning approaches in social robotics. In addition to a survey, we categorize existent reinforcement learning approaches based on the used method and the design of the reward mechanisms. Moreover, since communication capability is a prominent feature of social robots, we discuss and group the papers based on the communication medium used for reward formulation. Considering the importance of designing the reward function, we also provide a categorization of the papers based on the nature of the reward. This categorization includes three major themes: interactive reinforcement learning, intrinsically motivated methods, and task performance-driven methods. The benefits and challenges of reinforcement learning in social robotics, evaluation methods of the papers regarding whether or not they use subjective and algorithmic measures, a discussion in the view of real-world reinforcement learning challenges and proposed solutions, the points that remain to be explored, including the approaches that have thus far received less attention is also given in the paper. Thus, this paper aims to become a starting point for researchers interested in using and applying reinforcement learning methods in this particular research field.

AbstractIn the healthcare domain, head-mounted displays (HMDs) with augmented reality (AR) modalities have been reconsidered for application as a result of commercially available products and the needs for using computers in mobile context. Within a user-centered design approach, interviews were conducted with physicians, nursing staff and members of emergency medical services. Additionally practitioners were involved in evaluating two different head-mounted displays. Based on these measures, use cases and usability considerations according to interaction design and information visualization were derived and are described in this contribution.

This paper looks at compliance-gaining interaction in a Japanese elderly care facility from a conversation analytical point of view. Focus is on the various ways compliance is sought for by the caring staff with getting the residents out of bed and starting the daily morning care procedures. Three extracts are discussed in detail. The analysis shows how the residents in all three cases display clear signs of resistance to get up, but finally have to submit to the planned course of actions pursued by the care workers. A closer look at how this is played out in interaction suggests that the residents’ compliance is enforced rather than gained.

Summary Background: Generally benefits and risks of vaccines can be determined from studies carried out as part of regulatory compliance, followed by surveillance of routine data; however there are some rarer and more long term events that require new methods. Big data generated by increasingly affordable personalised computing, and from pervasive computing devices is rapidly growing and low cost, high volume, cloud computing makes the processing of these data inexpensive. Objective: To describe how big data and related analytical methods might be applied to assess the benefits and risks of vaccines. Method: We reviewed the literature on the use of big data to improve health, applied to generic vaccine use cases, that illustrate benefits and risks of vaccination. We defined a use case as the interaction between a user and an information system to achieve a goal. We used flu vaccination and pre-school childhood immunisation as exemplars. Results: We reviewed three big data use cases relevant to assessing vaccine benefits and risks: (i) Big data processing using crowd-sourcing, distributed big data processing, and predictive analytics, (ii) Data integration from heterogeneous big data sources, e.g. the increasing range of devices in the “internet of things”, and (iii) Real-time monitoring for the direct monitoring of epidemics as well as vaccine effects via social media and other data sources. Conclusions: Big data raises new ethical dilemmas, though its analysis methods can bring complementary real-time capabilities for monitoring epidemics and assessing vaccine benefit-risk balance.

Abstrak Istilah ekokrasi bisa dipahami sebagai kekuasaan dari, oleh dan untuk alam seisinya. Hanya, pengertian sederhana itu mengandung kesulitan filosofis yang sangat besar. Kesulitan itu antara lain terkait dengan paham tentang alam secara keseluruhan maupun setiap bagiannya, dan juga tentang kedudukan manusia. Sebagai perbandingan, untuk memenuhi gagasan demokrasi pun diperlukan jalan panjang, bahkan terjal, apalagi ekokrasi. Empat gagasan dasar demokrasi, yaitu kesetaraan, kebebasan, otonomi dan partisipasi tidak bisa begitu saja diterapkan pada ekokrasi, meski untuk bisa merunut kemungkinan ekokrasi, perbandingan dengan demokrasi bisa membantu. Meski kemudian menemukan tanjakan-tanjakan kesulitan, bukan berarti ekokrasi tidak mungkin sama sekali. Beberapa prinsip dari Henryk Skolimowski maupun gagasan prosedural keadilan menurut John Rawls bisa dijadikan titik pijak mendaki ekokrasi.AbstractEcocracy can be understood as power of, by and for the nature and its contents. However, such a simple definition comprises a great philosophical difficulties. Such difficulties inter alia related to the understanding of the nature either holistically or partially, and also on the human position related to it. As a comparison, even to fulfill the idea democracy requires a long, even steep road, moreover on fulfilling ecocracy. Four basic ideas of demoracy, which are equality, freedom, autonomy and participation cannot be applied as such to ecocracy, although to be able to trace the possibilities of ecocracy, comparison to democracy may help. Although it will possibly crossing the ramps of difficulties, does not mean ecocracy is impossible. Some principles from Henryk Skolimowski, or the idea of procedural justice of John Rawls can be used as starting point in climbing ecocracy.
