Identifying links between human personality and attributed robot personality is a relatively new area of human–robot interaction. In this paper we report on an exploratory study that investigates human and robot personality traits as part of a human–robot interaction trial. The trials took place in a simulated living-room scenario involving 28 participants and a human-sized robot of mechanical appearance. Participants interacted with the robot in two task scenarios relevant to a ‘robot in the home’ context. It was found that participants’ evaluations of their own personality traits are related to their evaluations of the robot’s personality traits. The statistical analysis of questionnaire data yields several statistically significant results: (a) Participants do not tend to assign their personality traits to match the robots’, (b) For individual personality traits, participants rated themselves as having stronger personality characteristics compared to the robot, (c) Specific significant correlations were found between participants’ and robot personality traits, and (d) Significant group differences for participant gender, age and technological background are highlighted. The results are discussed in light of developing personalized robot companions.

After a long history of negative stigmatisation, the practices of tattooing and body piercing have become fashionable in the last decade. Today, 10% of the population in modern western societies have some form of body modification. The aim of this study was to quantify the demographic and personality traits of tattooed and pierced individuals and to compare them with a control group of individuals without body modifications. These comparisons are based on questionnaires completed by 359 individuals that investigate the details of body modification, and which incorporate five personality scales. We describe several sex differences in ornament style and location. We found no relevant differences between modified and non‐modified individuals in relation to demographic variables. This indicates that some of the traditional attitudes towards tattoos and piercings appear to be outdated. However, we found striking differences in personality traits which suggest that body‐modified individuals are greater sensation seekers and follow a more unrestricted mating strategy than their non‐modified contemporaries. We discuss these differences in light of a potential signalling function of tattoos and piercings in the mating context. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This article presents an understanding of naive users’ perception of the communicative nature of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) motions refined through an iterative series of studies. This includes both what people believe the UAV is trying to communicate, and how they expect to respond through physical action or emotional response. Previous work in this area prioritized gestures from participants to the vehicle or augmenting the vehicle with additional communication modalities, rather than communicating without clear definitions of the states attempting to be conveyed. In an attempt to elicit more concrete states and better understand specific motion perception, this work includes multiple iterations of state creation, flight path refinement, and label assignment. The lessons learned in this work will be applicable broadly to those interested in defining flight paths, and within the human-robot interaction community as a whole, as it provides a base for those seeking to communicate using non-anthropomorphic robots. We found that the Negative Attitudes towards Robots Scale (NARS) can be an indicator of how a person is likely to react to a UAV, the emotional content they are likely to perceive from a message being conveyed, and it is an indicator for the personality characteristics they are likely to project upon the UAV. We also see that people commonly associate motions from other non-verbal communication situations onto UAVs. Flight specific recommendations are to use a dynamic retreating motion from a person to encourage following, use a perpendicular motion to their field of view for blocking, simple descending motion for landing, and to use either no motion or large altitude changes to encourage watching. Overall, this research explores the communication from the UAV to the bystander through its motion, to see how people respond physically and emotionally.

People often make ascriptions that they believe to be literally false. A robot, for example, may be treated as if it were a dog, or as if it had certain intentions, emotions, or personality traits. How can one do this while also believing that robots cannot really have such traits? In this paper we explore how Kendall Walton’s theory of make-believe might account for this apparent paradox. We propose several extensions to Walton’s theory, some implications for how we make attributions and use mental models, and an informal account of human-robot interaction from the human’s perspective.

AbstractThis paper presents a proof of concept prototype study for domestic home robot companions, using a narrative-based methodology based on the principles of immersive engagement and fictional enquiry, creating scenarios which are inter-connected through a coherent narrative arc, to encourage participant immersion within a realistic setting. The aim was to ground human interactions with this technology in a coherent, meaningful experience. Nine participants interacted with a robotic agent in a smart home environment twice a week over a month, with each interaction framed within a greater narrative arc. Participant responses, both to the scenarios and the robotic agents used within them are discussed, suggesting that the prototyping methodology was successful in conveying a meaningful interaction experience.

The robot technology seems to be an important part of daily life and has shown great progress in recent years. Robots are used in a lot of parts of life. Thus, we need to think and know how robots will affect human life and how human will react to robots. This study focused on human’s attitude toward robots. The first purpose of this study is to determine participants’ attitude towards robots and second is to investigate how personality traits predict their attitudes towards robots. Participants consisted of 219 (142 female and 77 male) university students. Of the participants were university students and their age was between 18-26 years old (mean age=20.54, SD=1.22). Negative Attitude towards Robot Scale and Quick Big Five Personality Test were used to collect data. Results indicated that gender, extraversion and openness to experience are important factors for participants’ attitude towards robots. Considering speed technological development we need more researches to evaluate correctly human-robot interactions. ÖzetRobot teknolojisi günlük yaşamın önemli bir parçası olarak görünmektedir ve son yıllarda büyük ilerleme göstermiştir. Robotlar yaşamın pek çok alanında kullanılmaktadır. Bundan dolayı robotların insan yaşamına nasıl etkide bulunduğunu ve insanların robotlara karşı nasıl teki verdiğini düşünmeye ve bilmeye ihtiyacımız vardır. Bu çalışma insanların robotlara karşı tutumları üzerine odaklanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın ilk amacı katılımcıların robotlara karşı tutumlarını belirlemek ve ikinci amacı da katılımcıların kişilik özelliklerinin robotlara karşı tutumlarını nasıl yordadığını incelemektir. Veriler 219 (142 kadın ve 77 erkek) üniversite öğrencisi katılımcıdan toplanmıştır. Katılımcıların yaş aralığı 18-26’dır (ort. yaş=20.54, SS=1.22). Robota karşı Olumsuz Tutum Ölçeği ve Hızlı Büyük Beşli Kişilik Testi kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar katılımcıların robotlara karşı tutumunda cinsiyetin, dışadönüklüğün ve deneyimlere açıklığın önemli faktörler olduğunu göstermiştir. Hızlı teknolojik gelişmeler göz önünde bulundurulduğunda insan-robot etkileşimini doğru bir şekilde değerlendirmek için daha fazla araştırmaya ihtiyacımız vardır.

Affect recognition for socially perceptive robots relies on representative data. While many of the existing affective corpora and databases contain posed and decontextualized affective expressions, affect resources for designing an affect recognition system in naturalistic human–robot interaction (HRI) must include context-rich expressions that emerge in the same scenario of the final application. In this paper, we propose a context-based approach to the collection and modeling of representative data for building an affect-sensitive robotic game companion. To illustrate our approach we present the key features of the Inter-ACT (INTEracting with Robots–Affect Context Task) corpus, an affective and contextually rich multimodal video corpus containing affective expressions of children playing chess with an iCat robot. We show how this corpus can be successfully used to train a context-sensitive affect recognition system (a valence detector) for a robotic game companion. Finally, we demonstrate how the integration of the affect recognition system in a modular platform for adaptive HRI makes the interaction with the robot more engaging.
