This article-style dissertation disrupts the status quo of academic research by exploring the subjectivity of women art educators across time. The researcher investigates subjectivity, as an evolution of tensions, without being beholden to tradition by using thinking with theory as a methodology for data and visual analysis. By working within and against the established structures of academe, art educators engage in a process of becoming. The dissertation illuminates processes of becoming while (a) disrupting labels placed upon women postsecondary art educators, (b) discovering the emergence of discourse when revisiting an exhibition, and (c) deconstructing the truths regarding two matriarchs of art education. These studies address equity in pK-20 curricula and programs with implications for producing justice in classrooms, artmaking, and among disciplines. The researcher organizes the dissertation into five chapters. The purpose of the first chapter is to introduce three related research studies, or manuscripts, by contextualizing them in the field of art education. Specifically, she states the problems under investigation, describes relevant scholarship, and presents the research theories and strategies. Each manuscript contains a unique study with complementary figures and/or tables, imbedded within the written text. Chapter Five includes a discussion where she outlines the manuscripts' major discoveries, summarizes the linkages among the three manuscripts, and addresses the ways in which the research has the potential to contribute to the field.

The future of the American academic research enterprise is considered. Data are presented that characterize the resources available for the 160 best-resourced research universities, a small subset of the 2,285 4-year, nonprofit, higher education institutions. A computational model of research universities was extended and used to simulate three strategic scenarios: status quo, steady decline in foreign graduate student enrollments, and downward tuition pressures from high-quality, online professional master’s programs. Four specific universities are modeled: large public and private, and small public and private. The former are at the top of the 160 in terms of resources, while the latter are at the bottom of the 160. The model’s projections suggest how universities might address these competitive forces. In some situations, it would be in the economic interests of these universities to restrict research activities to avoid the inherent subsidies these activities require. The computational projections portend the need for fundamental change of approaches to business for universities without large institutional resources.

Through questionnaires and statistical analysis, it is found that the status quo and training needs of rural primary English teachers in northern Anhui Province are as follows: (1) Teachers are young, female and hold concurrent posts in English teaching; (2) Most teachers have a strong desire to participate in the training, but fail to do so due to heavy workload of the course, or lack of the opportunity to go out to participate in higher level training; (3) Their ideal trainers are excellent front-line English teachers, and eager to get trained in education concepts, teaching skills and technology, and teaching modes. They are not interested in the study of education theory or academic research; (4) Many teachers lack confidence in their competence and urgently need training in their basic skills. In view of the above results, countermeasures are put forward as follows: to speed up the transformation of teachers’ growth, strengthening teachers’ basic skills of teaching, teaching while conducting scientific research, and combining field training and remote training together.

Abstract Mentoring has long been believed to be an effective means of developing students' clinical, research, and teaching skills to become competent professionals. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed two online mentoring programs, Student to Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P. 1:1) and Mentoring Academic Research Careers (MARC), to aid in the development of students. This paper provides a review of the literature on mentoring and compares and contrasts mentoring/mentors with clinical supervision/preceptors. Characteristics of effective mentors and mentees are offered. Additionally, the benefits of clinical mentoring such as, teambuilding in the workplace, retention of new staff, leadership development, and improved job satisfaction are discussed.

Purpose The intended purpose of this research note is to share the findings of a needs assessment online survey of speech and hearing professionals practicing in North Carolina to explore their interest in pursuing a research-focused PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) and to document their perceptions of barriers to pursing a PhD in CSD. In view of the well-documented shortage of doctor of philosophy (PhD) faculty to attract, retain, and mentor doctoral students to advance research and to prepare future speech and hearing professionals, CSD faculty must assess the needs, perceptions, and barriers prospective students encounter when considering pursuing a doctoral research degree in CSD. Method The article describes the results of a survey of 242 speech and hearing professionals to investigate their interest in obtaining an academic research-focused PhD in CSD and to solicit their perceived barriers to pursuing a research doctoral degree in CSD. Results Two thirds of the respondents (63.6%) reported that they had considered pursuing a PhD in CSD. Desire for knowledge, desire to teach, and work advancement were the top reasons given for pursuing a PhD in CSD. Eighty-two percent of respondents had no interest in traditional full-time study. Forty-two percent of respondents indicated that they would be interested in part-time and distance doctoral study. The barriers of time, distance, and money emerged as those most frequently identified barriers by respondents. Conclusion The implications inform higher education faculty on how they can best address the needs of an untapped pool of prospective doctoral students in CSD.

Zielsetzung: Die Hausarztpraxis gilt als ideales Setting für die Tabakentwöhnung. Die bundesweite „ÄSP-kardio-Studie“ liefert aktuelle Daten zum Status quo der Tabakentwöhnung nach der „5 A-Strategie“ in deutschen Hausarztpraxen. Methodik: Zwischen 10/2011 und 03/2012 wurden über 4.000 Hausärzte repräsentativ befragt. Der Fragebogen wurde vorab einem Expert Review unterzogen, durch kognitive Interviews validiert und in einer Pilotstudie getestet. Ergebnisse: Routinemäßig erfassten 89 % der Hausärzte etwaigen Tabakkonsum („Assess“), 82 % rieten Rauchern zu einem Rauchstopp („Advise“) und 12 % vereinbarten schriftliche Ziele einer Entwöhnung („Agree“). Hilfestellungen („Assist“) in Form einer Kurzintervention fanden mit 72 % deutlich häufiger statt als in Form von Informationsmaterial (33 %) oder einer Entwöhnungstherapie (27 %). Etwa die Hälfte (54 %) vereinbarte Folgetermine zur Überprüfung des Rauchstopps („Arrange“). Das Angebot war von arzt-, praxis- sowie patientenspezifischen Faktoren abhängig und in den nordöstlichen Bundesländern unterdurchschnittlich. Acht von 10 Hausärzten (77 %) bewerteten ihre Maßnahmen als nicht erfolgreich. Schlussfolgerungen: Deutlich wird die suboptimale und ungleich verteilte Versorgung von Rauchern mit angemessenen Entwöhnungsmaßnahmen in deutschen Hausarztpraxen.

Die Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-/Hyperaktivitätsstörung (ADHS) zählt zu den häufigsten psychischen Störungen im Kindesalter. Ziel ist es, den Status Quo der Ätiologie hinsichtlich genetischer, neurobiologischer und neuropsychologischer Faktoren zu beschreiben. Es werden die derzeit anerkannten Therapiemethoden in der Behandlung der ADHS sowie ihre Wirksamkeit vorgestellt. Moderne Bildgebungsmethoden (z. B. MRT; fMRT) bieten die Möglichkeit, nichtinvasiv spezifische Aussagen über anatomische und funktionelle Änderungen zutreffen. Untersuchungen mit Hilfe dieser bildgebenden Verfahren stehen deswegen im Fokus der hier zitierten Ätiologie- und Therapieforschung. Abschließend folgt ein kurzer Ausblick auf mögliche Zukunftsfragen.
