This paper explores the fairness of meritocracy concerning admission to secondary schools based on the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in Singapore. The Ministry of Education has consistently adopted the ideology of meritocracy as so to select talented students, stimulate effort, and optimize the allocation of rewards. The PSLE results can largely determine students’ educational tracks and even career orientation in Singapore. The paper shows how the principle of meritocracy works and how the government uses meritocratic belief in the education system. The paper argues that meritocracy has posed a threat to equality in admission to secondary schools in Singapore. The findings indicate that the meritocratic policy does not recognize both the importance of family SES and the gap between elite schools and neighbourhood schools in the Singapore education system. Students with wealthy and well-educated parents and students in elite schools are more likely to acquire better educational attainment, since they tend to gain more cultural capital from family and social capital from school. The principle of meritocracy fails to allocate opportunities fairly to students and can lead to inequality in education and exacerbate educational stratification.

In the present day, the examination results of different school boards of India in general and West Bengal in particular are not much satisfactory in respect of performance in mathematics. It has been an observed fact that educational facilities provided in a school has to play a vital role in the performance of its students. The present study attempts to examine whether the performance of students in mathematics depends on the location of school where they study. Ex post facto research design has been employed in carrying out the study. The scores in mathematics of 1104 Madhyamik examinees from six secondary schools of Kolkata and outskirts served as the source of data and the sampling technique used was purposive. Results indicate that there exist significant differences between mathematics scores in Madhyamik Examination of students from Kolkata and outskirt schools. Students from Kolkata schools score better in mathematics than the students from the schools that are situated in the outskirts. The study, therefore, recommends that schools located in the outskirts should be provided with better infrastructure to help in better performance of their students in mathematics.

Governments in almost all countries provide incentives to promote entrepreneurship generally andto establish new enterprises particularly. Creating new enterprises has also been an important goal inregional development policies of a country. However, what makes a person establish an enterprise stillremains the most important question. This study investigates the issue among final-year students infour different secondary schools from western Norway. The results show that local entrepreneurialenvironment and role models are important factors to contribute to and/or correlated with youngpeople’s desire to create a new enterprise. In addition to extending the prior results, our study supportsthe previous findings regarding the importance of social capital and desire for independence. Itshould, however, especially be noted that leadership ambitions was an important correlate underlyingestablishment of an enterprise among youths. Therefore, this study recommends including activitiesthat build up social capital, desire for autonomy, and leadership ambitions in education in order tomotivate youths to found an enterprise.
