An Evaluation Study of a Dementia Screening Program in Taiwan: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behaviors

To determine whether Seoul’s dementia screening program increased the rate of diagnosis and the appropriate use of healthcare services for people with dementia, a retrospective data analysis was conducted based on administrative data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Two cohorts were constructed to represent the year before Seoul’s dementia screening program began (2007) (control group) and the year after the implementation of the program (2009) (treatment group). A difference-in-difference analysis was used to compare the diagnosis rates, number of clinic visits, and dementia-related drug prescription rates for 4 districts that implemented dementia screening programs between 2007 and 2009 and 14 areas that did not. After the introduction of the program, there was a 55.4% increase in physician-diagnosed dementia. The “average drug cost per patient” increased by 52.2% (Exp(β) = 1.522, p = 0.0264), the “average outpatient visits per patient” tended to increase by 13.5% (Exp(β) = 1.135, p = 0.1852), and the “average outpatient treatment fees per visit per patient” tended to increase by 24.4% (Exp(β) = 1.244, p = 0.0821). The implementation of dementia screening programs led to an increase in healthcare service utilization. Therefore, this program was found to be an effective strategy for reducing undiagnosed dementia cases and encouraging patients to use adequate healthcare services.

Product piracy inhibits creative talents, innovation and significantly affects the economic benefits for original creators of entertainment ideas and products. Based on Theory of Planned Behaviors, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore some consumer behaviors which influence purchases of pirate entertainment products in New York City. Data were collected from 50 participants who have purchased pirated entertainment products for atleast 2 years. Data analysis involved thematic analysis. The 3 emergent themes in final report related to Personal, Cultural, and Social Influences on entertainment consumers purchases of pirated products. The findings could result in strategies for managers to inhibit piracy and alleviate damaging effects to sales and profitability of entertainment products. This study is beneficial to the entertainment practitioners, academics, managers and policy makers.

Abstract This paper introduces the rapidly growing modern mixed methods research (MMR) and its application in a Chinese cancer screening program. While some previous researchers have incorporated quantitative and qualitative data in research, recent mixed methods developments have provided significant clarity that can guide those new to the MMR field. Understanding the context for using MMR and examining a complex mixed methods evaluation study in Taiwan can help illustrate opportunities for and application of mixed methods in Asians. The Taiwan Cervical Cancer Screening Education Program is used as an exemplar of a multi-phase complex mixed methods evaluation study showcasing various MMR designs. These include an exploratory sequential design to develop culturally sensitive study instrument, iterative concurrent and sequential mixed methods for intervention mapping, and an embedded mixed methods evaluation design to assess impact. Visual diagrams are introduced to facilitate communication of mixed methods design procedures and products in each phase.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes is a common non-communicable disease that is responsible for about 9% of all deaths and a 25% reduction in life expectancy. However, nearly half of the diabetic patients are not aware of their disease. In this regard, to identify un-known diabetic patients, diabetes screening is of great importance. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of two commonly used diabetes screening tests that are currently recommended by the Iranian diabetes screening program for (DSP). Methods The validity of the two diabetes screening tests were measured among 1057 participants who were older than 30 years of age. The studied screening tests included capillary fasting blood glucose (CBG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The golden standard for measuring the validity of the tests was venous fasting plasma glucose (VPG). Results According to the results, the sensitivity of CBG and HbA1c tests was 69.01% and 84.5%, and the specificity of the tests were 95.7% and 79.3%, respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 53.84% and 97.72% for CBG and 22.72% and 98.61% for HbA1c, respectively. The recommended cut points for CBG and HbA1c were 116.5 mg/dl and 7.15%, respectively. Using these values as the new cut points, sensitivity and specificity of CBG and HbA1c changed to 80.30% and 89.10%, and 77.50% and 94.20%, respectively. Conclusions Compared to several other countries, the performance of Iranian DSP is relatively better. The Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve suggested new cut points for significantly better performance of DSP.

Despite the potential governmental agenda towards cash waqf, this area has been givessn limited attention in academic literature with special regards to the supply side. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors influencing the public intention in endowing cash waqf by utilizing an extended theory of planned behaviors (TPB); in which religiosity, knowledge, and trust variables are added. Primary data from 685 respondents in Indonesia are analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The result showed that the intention to endow cash waqf is positively affected by all of the TPB variables (attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) and other extended variables. The findings suggest an optimization in waqf fund collection and waqf fund management.  For waqf collection, it is important to improve public literacy and the quality and quantity of supporting facilities and systems. Meanwhile, institutional management should be strengthened for waqf management.
