This study investigated the influence of several dentin bonding agents, resin composites and curing modes on push-out bond strength to human dentin. 360 extracted caries-free third molars were prepared, cut into slices, embedded in epoxy resin and perforated centrally. One half of the specimens (180) were treated by using one-step adhesive systems and the other half (180) with multi-step adhesive systems. Subsequently, the cavities were filled with either universal, flowable or bulk-fill resin composite according to the manufactures’ product line and cured with either turbo or soft start program. After storage the push-out test was performed. The data was analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, three- and one-way ANOVA followed by the Scheffé post-hoc test, unpaired two-sample t-test (p < 0.05). The strongest influence on push-out bond strength was exerted by the resin composite type (partial eta squared ηP2 = 0.505, p < 0.001), followed by the adhesive system (ηP2 = 0.138, p < 0.001), while the choice of the curing intensity was not significant (p = 0.465). The effect of the binary or ternary combinations of the three parameters was significant for the combinations resin composite type coupled adhesive system (ηP2 = 0.054, p < 0.001), only. The flowable resin composites showed predominantly mixed, while the universal and bulk-fill resin composite showed adhesive failure types. Cohesive failure types were not observed in any group. Multi-step adhesive systems are preferable to one-step adhesive systems due to their higher bond strength to dentin. Flowable resin composites showed the highest bond strength and should become more important as restoration material especially in cavity lining. The use of a soft start modus for polymerization of resin composites does not enhance the bond strength to dentin.

In this study evaluated the effect of different adhesive systems and resin composites on the microtensile bond strength of repairs using a bulk-fill composite. Ninety specimens were prepared using a half-hourglass mold of composite Filtek Bulk Fill using a silicone matrix. Specimens were randomly distributed in 9 experimental groups (n=10) according to adhesive [Universal Single Bond (SBU), Scotchbond Multipurpose Adhesive (SBMP), and Single Bond 2 (SB2)] and resin composite (Filtek Bulk Fill, Aura Bulk Fill, and Filtek Z250). For control group, hourglass specimens were used to measure the ultimate bond strength. Specimens were submitted to thermal cycling (5,000 cycles, 5 and 55°C, 30s) to simulate the aging of restoration and then the repair procedure was performed. After the diamond-tipped surface roughening to be repaired, the adhesive protocol was performed according to group, the specimen was placed in an hourglass-shaped mold and the other half was filled with the repair composite. After 24h, bond strength of specimens was obtained by microtensile using a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Tukey’s and Dunnett’s tests (α=0.05). SBU showed higher bond strength compared to SB2, while SBMP showed intermediate values. However, all experimental groups showed lower bond strength compared to ultimate bond strength. In conclusion, bulk-fill composite repair using universal or conventional solvent-free adhesive improved the adhesion independent of composite tested.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim was to evaluate the effect of different adhesive systems and surface treatments on the integrity of resin-resin and resin-tooth interfaces after partial removal of preexisting resin composites using quantitative image analysis for microleakage testing protocol. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 human molar teeth were restored with either of the resin composites (Filtek Z250/GrandioSO) occlusally. The teeth were thermocycled (1000×). Mesial and distal 1/3 parts of the restorations were removed out leaving only middle part. One side of the cavity was finished with course diamond bur and the other was air-abraded with 50 μm Al2O3. They were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10) to receive: Group 1: Adper Single Bond 2; Group 2: All Bond 3; Group 3: ClearfilSE; Group 4: BeautiBond, before being repaired with the same resin composite (Filtek Z250). The specimens were re-thermocycled (1000×), sealed with nail varnish, stained with 0.5% basic fuchsin, sectioned mesiodistally and photographed digitally. The extent of dye penetration was measured by image analysis software (ImageJ) for both bur-finished and air-abraded surfaces at resin-tooth and resin-resin interfaces. The data were analyzed statistically. Results: BeautiBond exhibited the most microleakage at every site. Irrespective of adhesive and initial composite type, air-abrasion showed less microleakage except for BeautiBond. The type of initial repaired restorative material did not affect the microleakage. BeautiBond adhesive may not be preferred in resin composite repair in terms of microleakage prevention. Conclusions: Surface treatment with air-abrasion produced the lowest microleakage scores, independent of the adhesive systems and the pre-existing resin composite type. Pre-existing composite type does not affect the microleakage issue. All-in-one adhesive resin (BeautiBond) may not be preferred in resin composite repair in terms of microleakage prevention.

Abstract Introduction The longevity of silane promoted adhesion of surface conditioned metallic materials is of concern in dentistry and poses both a functional and esthetic dilemma for the patient and dental professionals. Several methods for surface conditioning exist, but some are employed more frequently in clinical practice. Aim of the Review This overview aims to characterize and discuss the most commonly used surface conditioning methods based on silanization. The primary chemical features in silane treatment will also be presented. Method of Review The literature regarding silane utilization was systematically selected and 68 cited references published during 1967-2005 were reviewed. Technical descriptions of different silica-coating (silicatization) methods are presented and some comparative clinical and in vitro experiences are reported. Some other surface condition methods applied in dental laboratories were also selected for presentation. Conclusion It is concluded in this overview tribochemical silica-coating followed by a mandatory silane coupling agent application is a clinically proved, relevant adhesion promotion method to enhance the bonding of resin composites to metallic dental materials. There has been a great tendency toward using resin composite in dentistry and exploring nano-hardness, elastic modulus, and effect of polishing on its mechanical properties after its artificial ageing. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface polishing of four different resin composites on their nano-hardness and elastic modulus. This effect was tested right after light curing of composite resin and after its artificial ageing (immersion in alcoholic medium). Nanoindentation test preparations, surface roughness, surface hardness, and scanning electron microscope were conducted across the four different resin composites: Clearfil AP-X (APX), Estelite Sigma Quick (ESQ), Beautifil II (BE2), and FiltekTM Supreme Ultra Universal restorative (FSU). We found that difference in fillers load and particle size are amongst the factors influencing hardness and modulus of elasticity. The APX is the highest in term of hardness due to fillers load and size while the ESQ is the lowest because all fillers in nano size and distributed homogenously. The significance of surface polishing of the studied resin composite restorations was highlighted. Future research may focus on exploring survival rate of polished and non-polished composite surfaces with emphasis on measuring degree of conversion and impacts of polished and non-polished surfaces on the individuals’ oral health quality of life.
