A preliminary evaluation of the associations among functional performance tasks and quality of life in obese and healthy weight youth

Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are data aggregation tools based on computer technology that assist clinicians to promote healthy weight management and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. We carried out a randomised controlled 3-month trial to implement lifestyle modifications in breast cancer (BC) patients by means of CDSS during the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, 55 BC women at stages I-IIIA were enrolled. They were randomly assigned either to Control group, receiving general lifestyle advice (n = 28) or the CDSS group (n = 27), to whom the CDSS provided personalised dietary plans based on the Mediterranean diet (MD) together with physical activity guidelines. Food data, anthropometry, blood markers and quality of life were evaluated. At 3 months, higher adherence to MD was recorded in the CDSS group, accompanied by lower body weight (kg) and body fat mass percentage compared to control (p < 0.001). In the CDSS arm, global health/quality of life was significantly improved at the trial endpoint (p < 0.05). Fasting blood glucose and lipid levels (i.e., cholesterol, LDL, triacylglycerols) of the CDSS arm remained unchanged (p > 0.05) but were elevated in the control arm at 3 months (p < 0.05). In conclusion, CDSS could be a promising tool to assist BC patients with lifestyle modifications during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objectives. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect affecting the respiratory functions, functional performance, and quality of life (QOL) in school-aged children. Rarely have studies been conducted to evaluate the impacts of respiratory muscle training on school-aged children with postoperative CDH. The current study was designed to evaluate the impacts of respiratory muscle training on respiratory function, maximal exercise capacity, functional performance, and QOL in these children. Methods. This study is a randomized control study. 40 children with CDH (age: 9-11 years) were assigned randomly into two groups. The first group conducted an incentive spirometer exercise combined with inspiratory muscle training (study group, n=20), whereas the second group conducted only incentive spirometer exercise (control group, n=20), thrice weekly for twelve consecutive weeks. Respiratory functions, maximal exercise capacity, functional performance, and pediatric quality of life inventory (PedsQL) were assessed before and after the treatment program. Results. Regarding the posttreatment analysis, the study group showed significant improvements in all outcome measures (FVC%, p<0.001; FEV1%, p=0.002; VO2max, p=0.008; VE/VCO2 slope, p=0.002; 6-MWT, p<0.001; and PedsQL, p<0.001), whereas the control group did not show significant changes (p>0.05). Conclusion. Respiratory muscle training may improve respiratory functions, maximal exercise capacities, functional performance, and QOL in children with postoperative CDH. Clinical commendations have to be considered to include respiratory muscle training in pulmonary rehabilitation programs in children with a history of CDH.

Abstract Introduction: Medical cannabis (MC) is commonly claimed to be an effective treatment for chronic or refractory pain. With interest in MC in the United States growing, as evidenced by the 29 states and 3 US districts that now have public MC programs, the need for clinical evidence supporting this claim has never been greater. Methods: This was a retrospective, mirror-image study that investigated MC's effectiveness in patients suffering from chronic pain associated with qualifying conditions for MC in New York State. The primary outcome was to compare European Quality of Life 5 Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D) and Pain Quality Assessment Scale (PQAS) scores at baseline and 3 months post-therapy. The secondary outcomes included comparisons of monthly analgesic prescription costs and opioid consumption pre- and post-therapy. Tolerability was assessed by side effect incidence. Results: This investigation included 29 subjects. Quality of life and pain improved, measured by change in EQ-5D (Pre 36 – Post 64, P &lt; .0001) and change in PQAS paroxysmal (Pre 6.76 – Post 2.04, P &lt; .0001), surface (Pre 4.20 – Post 1.30, P &lt; .0001), deep (Pre 5.87 – Post 2.03, P &lt; .0001), unpleasant (Pre “miserable” – Post “annoying”, P &lt; .0001). Adverse effects were reported in 10% of subjects. Discussion: After 3 months treatment, MC improved quality of life, reduced pain and opioid use, and lead to cost savings. Large randomized clinical trials are warranted to further evaluate the role of MC in the treatment of chronic pain.

This study aimed to examine the effects of grape juice consumption during 4 weeks alone or combined with a therapeutic exercise protocol on quality of life (SF-36), handgrip strength (dynamometry) and physical function performance evaluated through Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go, Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) in elderly women. Nineteen healthy elderly women were distributed in Grape Juice Group (GJG, n=9) and Grape Juice + Exercise Group (GJEG, n=10). A significant improvement in handgrip strength and BBS were observed in GJG. Both groups showed increased values in 6MWT and the quality of life was significantly improved after intervention in GJEG. Daily grape juice consumption is able to improve some physical functional parameters in elderly women; however, when in combination with therapeutic exercise intervention may provide a more effective strategy to positively affect the quality of life.
