Campus Conflicts Involving Students’ and University Management in Nigeria: The Case of the University of Ibadan

Information communication technologies (ICT) offer opportunities to young people through guided education and skill acquisition, which in turn lead to youth's self-sustainability, and employment. Despite the immense contributions and benefits of ICT to economic development and reduction of unemployment, there is a little overarching investigation regarding the factors affecting ICT skills development among students in the University of Ibadan. This study investigates how individual characteristics and social learning modelling factors influence ICT skills development among postgraduate students in the University of Ibadan. The study adopted a survey research design. Data were collected from a sample of 398 postgraduate students. Frequency counts and percentages, Chi-square test, Spearman's rank correlation, and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. Three research questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that individual characteristics and social learning modelling factors jointly influenced the ICT skills development of postgraduate students (F (9, 388) = 9.488, P<0.05). The study showed that students recognise that ICT skills are required to succeed in today’s world and are deemed necessary for employment. The respondents expressed interest in developing ICT skills to boost their employability. They also felt that the university management is obligated to provide training on ICT skills. Based on this, the study recommends that educational institutions and the government should implement effective policies for students to acquire sufficient ICT skills. The study also recommends that ICT skills development programmes should be incorporated into academic programmes of universities in Nigeria. <p>Lately competition becomes really tough, because of that each University has to choose the right strategy in order to increase their market share. Some of the strategies than can be done are by choosing the right communication media for each promotion that the university wants to do. For the reason, this research wants to know which communication media that really attracts students at Bunda Mulia University, Management Major in year 2010/2011. In this research, the writers used incidental sampling. The writers also use questionnaire for gathering the data or information need. To analyze the data, the writes use SPSS ver. 15.0 for windows. The conclusion of this research about the highest percentage to the lowest percentage of the most attractive communication media are television, internet, direct mail, magazines, radio, newspapers, outdor advertising, and the last one is telemarketing. The article describes the experience of the private further professional education establishment in integration with private medical organizations as a hi-tech clinic base. The purpose of the experience was to work out an education program of professional retraining which enables medical organization to extend the range of its services. The demand for such programs investment stems from the gap between the professional level of medical workers training at universities and the needs of hi-tech segment of cosmetology service which requires highly qualified specialists.The gap between the increasingly changing market demands and the existing higher education offer may be bridged through involvement of practicing professionals in education process.The authors consider the best Russian and foreign practices of interaction between private medical establishments and private education establishments aimed at creation Centers of Excellence on the example of Neo Clinic Tuymen. The presented model shows the competitive advantages of a professional retraining education program characterized by a big concentration of resources per student and a high value of education service. The article may be useful for the university management in Russia in developing and updating strategies and programs of practice-oriented education that will meet the requirements of regional labour markets, concrete organizations and employers and contribute to graduates’ adaptation to actual production process.

In order to kick-start milk production and upgrade genetic base of local zebu cattle at the University of Ibadan, four in-calf Jersey heifers and one bull were acquired in September 2012, from a pure herd of Jersey cattle maintained on a private farm in Shonga, Kwara State, Nigeria. Management at Shonga was based on an intensive, zero-grazing system. The animals were apparently in a good state of health at the time of procurement. At the University of Ibadan, management was also intensive, with partial grazing, fortified grass silage and concentrates supplementation. Health management of Jersey cattle involved preventive and curative measures. Calving occurred within 7 and 156 days of arrival at Ibadan. Two out of four heifers calved successfully while two had still-births. Calves were allowed to suckle their dams for 14 days after calving and bottle-fed from milk collected from their dams afterwards. Milking was done twice daily at 7am and 4pm using a portable milking machine. Milk yield averaged 8.8 kg/cow/day with lactation length ranging between 93 and 246 days. Average composition of milk was 13.69, 3.60, 4.73, 0.65 and 4.71% for total solids, protein, fat, ash and carbohydrate respectively. In order to maximize milk production from Jersey cattle under the humid tropical condition of Ibadan, there is need to maintain a high plane of nutrition, adopt a preventive healthcare system and incorporate a cooling system to ameliorate the effects of high ambient temperatures.Key words: calving age, dairy cattle, lactation length, milk composition, milk yield

Purpose This study aims to examine the extant literature to analyze the relationship between quality assurance (QA) and innovation in the higher education context. Design/methodology/approach This study selected 63 articles through a systematic literature review in Scopus and Web of Science databases and performed a descriptive and thematic synthesis-analysis on the sample. Findings The research identifies several perspectives discussed on QA systems covering experiences, criticisms and practice implications. The literature review shows there is no clear consensus on whether innovation in higher education institutions (HEIs) is fostered or hindered by QA processes. However, it seems that the likelihood of innovativeness and positive QA outcomes are directly linked to how these processes are managed in universities. Research limitations/implications This review highlights the university management concerns that emerge with QA issues as it is not yet clear to what extent innovation is actually promoted in scenarios where QA is applied. Hence, this literature review could be considered comprehensive but not exhaustive. Further studies are recommended to improve the understanding of how HEIs can both innovate and ensure quality at the same time. Originality/value The paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by advancing the opportunities and challenges that HEIs face due to QA system features.
