Time-averaged Stanton number and surface-pressure distributions are reported for the first-stage vane row and the first-stage blade row of the Rocketdyne Space Shuttle Main Engine two-stage fuel-side turbine. These measurements were made at 10, 50, and 90 percent span on both the pressure and suction surfaces of the component. Stanton-number distributions are also reported for the second-stage vane at 50 percent span. A shock tube is used as a short-duration source of heated and pressurized air to which the turbine is subjected. Platinum thin-film gages are used to obtain the heat-flux measurements and miniature silicone-diaphragm pressure transducers are used to obtain the surface pressure measurements. The first-stage vane Stanton number distributions are compared with predictions obtained using a quasi-three dimensional Navier–Stokes solution and a version of STAN5. This same N–S technique was also used to obtain predictions for the first blade and the second vane.

Three dimensional steady multistage calculations, using mixing plane approach, are presented for two different blade geometries in a two stage axial test turbine with shrouded blades. A 3D multiblock Navier-Stokes finite volume solver (TBLOCK) has been used in all the simulations. In order to study shroud leakage flow effects the whole shroud cavity geometry has been modeled, overcoming most of the limitations of simple shroud leakage model in calculating fluid flow over complex geometries. Numerical investigations are mainly focused on assessing the ability of the solver to be used as multistage design tool for modeling leakage-mainstream flow interaction. Several calculations are compared. The first computes the main blade flow path with no modeling of the shroud cavities. The second includes the modeling of the shroud cavities for a zero leakage mass flow rate. Finally a multiblock calculation which models all the leakage flow paths and shroud cavities has been carried out for two different levels of shroud seal clearance. It is found that neglecting shroud leakage significantly alters the computed velocity profiles and loss distributions, for both the computed blade geometries. A numerically predicted shroud leakage offset loss is presented for the two considered blade geometries, focusing on the relative importance of the leakage flow, re-entry mixing losses, and inlet and exit shroud cavity effect. Results demonstrates that full calculation of leakage flow paths and cavities is required to obtain reliable results, indicating the different effects of the leakage-to-mainstream flow interaction on the blade geometries computed. Despite a slight increase in the computational time, multiblock approach in handling leakage flow problem can now-days be used as a practical tool in the blade design process and routine shroud leakage calculations.

A streamline curvature method with improvements to key loss models is applied to a two-stage, low aspect ratio, transonic fan with design tip relative Mach number of approximately 1.65. Central to the improvements is the incorporation of a physics-based shock model. The attempt here is to capture the effects of key flow phenomena relative to the off-design performance of the fan. A quantitative analysis regarding solution sensitivities to model parameters that influence the key phenomena over a wide range of operating conditions is presented. Predictions are compared to performance determined from overall and interstage measurements, as well as from a three-dimensional, steady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method applied across the first rotor. Overall and spanwise comparisons demonstrate that the improved model gives reasonable performance trending and generally accurate results. The method can be used to provide boundary conditions to higher-order solvers, or implemented within novel approaches using the streamline curvature method to explore complex engine-inlet integration issues, such as time-variant distortion.

Abstract In this paper, we introduce the incompressible discrete Maxwellian equilibrium distribution function and external forces into the two-stage third-order Discrete Unified Gas-Kinetic Scheme (DUGKS) for simulating low-speed incompressible turbulent flows with forcing term. The Wall-Adapting Local Eddy-viscosity (WALE) and Vreman sub-grid models for Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of wall-bounded turbulent flows are coupled within the present framework. In order to simulate the three-dimensional turbulent flows associated with great computational cost, a parallel implementation strategy for the present framework is developed, and is validated by three canonical wall-bounded turbulent flows, viz., the fully developed turbulent channel flow at a friction Reynolds number (Re) about 180, the turbulent plane Couette flow at a friction Re number about 93 and three-dimensional lid-driven cubical cavity flow at a Re number of 12000. The turbulence statistics are computed by the present approach with both WALE and Vreman models, and their predictions match precisely with each other. Especially, the predicted flow physics of three-dimensional lid-driven cavity are consistent with the description from abundant literatures. While, they have small discrepancies in comparison to the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) due to the relatively low grid resolution. The present numerical results verify that the present two-stage third-order DUGKS-based LES method is capable for simulating inhomogeneous wall-bounded turbulent flows and getting reliable results with relatively coarse grids.

Two-stage split case centrifugal pumps play an important role in large flow rate and high lift water transfer situations. To investigate the influence of baffles in between stages on the performance and internal flow characteristics, the unsteady simulations for the prototype pump were carried out by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The structured grids were generated for the whole flow passage. The calculated performance results were verified by the experimental measurements. The entropy production method based on numerical simulation was applied to analyze the distribution and mechanism of flow losses. The results show that the turbulence dissipation is the dominant flow loss, and the viscous dissipation can be neglected. The baffles can reduce the turbulence dissipation power obviously and can improve the hydraulic efficiency by maximum 5%, especially under QBEP and over-load conditions. The baffles have the greatest effect on the hydraulic losses in the double suction impeller., because they change the flow characteristics in the channels between the first stage impeller and the double suction impeller, affecting the inflow condition dramatically for the impeller. The study can give a reference to optimize the design of the two-stage split case centrifugal pump for high efficiency.

This paper presents the design of a highly loaded transonic two-stage fan using several advanced three-dimensional blading techniques including forward sweep and “hub bending” in rotors and several bowed configurations in stators. The effects of these blading techniques on the performance of the highly loaded transonic two-stage fan were investigated on the basis of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes predictions. The results indicate that forward sweep has insignificant impact on the total pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency of the fan. The throttling range of the fan is found to be improved by forward sweep because the shock in the forward swept rotor is expelled later upstream to the leading edge than that in the unswept one. Hub bending design technique increases the efficiency in the hub region of R1 due to the reduction of the low momentum zone in the hub region near the trailing edge. The stator vane design has a pronounced impact on the performance of the fan. The total pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency, and stall margin of the schemes with the bowed vanes are increased significantly compared to the scheme with the straight vanes. The large corner stall in the straight S1 vane is reduced effectively by the bowed S1 vanes. Moreover, the strong corner stall in the straight S2 vane is fully eliminated by the bowed S2 vanes. Among the bowed vane schemes, the scheme with positive bowed (P. B.) hub and negative bowed (N. B.) tip vanes has the best efficiency and stall margin performances thanks to the superiority of the performance over the midspan regions of the bowed vanes.

AbstractSupersonic turbulence plays an important role in a number of extreme astrophysical and terrestrial environments, yet its understanding remains rudimentary. We use data from a three-dimensional simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence to reconstruct an exact fourth-order relation derived analytically from the Navier–Stokes equations (Galtier & Banerjee, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 107, 2011, p. 134501). Our analysis supports a Kolmogorov-like inertial energy cascade in supersonic turbulence previously discussed on a phenomenological level. We show that two compressible analogues of the four-fifths law exist describing fifth- and fourth-order correlations, but only the fourth-order relation remains ‘universal’ in a wide range of Mach numbers from incompressible to highly compressible regimes. A new approximate relation valid in the strongly supersonic regime is derived and verified. We also briefly discuss the origin of bottleneck bumps in simulations of compressible turbulence.
