Yield and nitrogen fixation of berseem clover as a potential winter forage crop under semiarid conditions

Under the conditions of a model pot experiments, the reaction of the self-fertile lines of alfalfa Kishvardy 46, Kishvardy 27, Vertus and Ziguen to inoculation with nodule bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti AC48 and AC88 was studied. As a result of studies, it was found that the intensity of assimilation of N2 by symbiotic systems created with the participation of various genotypes of alfalfa and active strains of S. meliloti is one of the main factors that affects the vegetative mass yield of this important forage crop. Self-fertile lines of Medicago sativa L. plants, inoculated with different strains of rhizobia were characterized by higher rates of the mass formed on the root nodules, compared to the control plants of the alfalfa variety Yaroslavna. The traditional dynamics of nitrogen-fixation activity of root nodules was maintained in all the symbiotic systems studied by us, with low values in the stems formation stage and intensive growth in the budding and flowering stages. The highest level of nitrogen fixation and vegetative growth of plants (values of plants green and dry mass, roots and root nodules mass) was established by inoculation of alfalfa line Kishvardy 46 with strain S. meliloti AC48. During the growing season the indices of the mass of nodules formed on the roots of these plants were higher by 1.8–2.3 times, the green mass by 1.2–1.6 times and the height of the plants 1.2–1.4 times as compared to the control. In the flowering stages the nitrogen-fixation activity of the symbiotic complex of plants of the Kishvardy line 27 and nodule bacteria S. meliloti AC48 exceeded the values in the symbiotic systems formed with the participation of the same strain and plants of the Ziguen and Vertus lines by 13.0 and 39.4 %. The lowest values of nitrogen fixation activity were observed by inoculation of plants of the Vertus and Ziguen lines with active strains S. meliloti AC48 and AC88 compared to the symbioses formed by the plants of the Kishvardy lines 27 and 46, as well as of the control-variety Yaroslavna with the noted strains. A stimulating effect of inoculation of alfalfa seeds of different genotypes on the growth and development of plants was noted, as evidenced by the positive dynamics of the increase in above-ground mass, the accumulation of dry matter and higher than the control values (indicators) of plant height during the growing season.

Clover cultivars grown with ryegrass were compared in an establishment year under dairy cow grazing. There was no difference in total annual productton but summer production was greater with Pawera red clover and with Kopu or Pitau white clovers. Clovers differed little in the proportion of nitrogen fixed, except during summer when values were highest for Pawera. Pawera was less prone to nematode attack than white clover cultivars but was more susceptible to clover rot. Resident clovers and high buried seed levels (e.g., 11-91 kg/ha) made introduction of new clover cultivars difficult. Sown clovers established best (50-70% of total clover plants) when drilled into soil treated with dicamba and glyphosate. Trade-offs in dry matter (DM) and metabolisable energy (ME) between combinations of three maize silage hybrids varying in maturity from 100-113 CRM and six winter forage options were investigated in a Waikato farmer's field over 2 years. Winter crops were triticale, cut once; oats grazed 1-2 times; and Tama and Feast II Italian ryegrass, each cut or grazed 2-3 times. Greatest DM and ME production (38.9 t/ha; 396 GJ/ha) was from a 113 CRM hybrid followed by a single-cut triticale crop. The most economical sources of DM and ME were obtained from a 100 CRM maize hybrid plus grazed oats (11.8 c/ kg; 1.12 c/MJ), while the cheapest ME source among cut winter forages was a 113 CRM maize hybrid + triticale (1.18 c/MJ). Reliable annual silage production of 30 t DM/ha and 330 GJ ME/ha (or 3000 kg MS/ha) is possible using a late maturing maize hybrid combined with a winter forage crop such as triticale, although the low feed value of the triticale may limit its use as feed for milking cows. Biofertilizers are fertilizers containing microorganisms that promote plant growth by improving the supply of nutrients to the host plant. The supply of nutrients is improved naturally by nitrogen fixation and solubilizing phosphorus. The living microorganisms in biofertilizers help in building organic matter in the soil and restoring the natural nutrient cycle. Biofertilizers can be grouped into Nitrogen-fixing biofertilizers, Phosphorous-solubilizing biofertilizers, Phosphorous-mobilizing biofertilizers, Biofertilizers for micro nutrients and Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria. This study conducted in Kottayam district was intended to identify the awareness and acceptance of biofertilizers among the farmers of the area. Data have been collected from 120 farmers by direct interviews with structured questionnaire.

The aeolian processes play an important role in the relief formation under the semiarid conditions of the intermountain basins of Southern Siberia. Ancient sand landforms occur in different regions of Siberia — the Ob, Chuya, Аley, Yenisei, Аngara, Selenga, Chikoy, Khilok and Chara river valleys and Lake Baikal coasts. The sandy coasts of Lake Baikal are of great interest in terms of floristic diversity determined by a high degree of endemism. Despite centuries of study of the lake basin, sand vegetation is poorly described in the literature. This study presents an analysis of 184 relevés of psammophytic vegetation from the Republic of Buryatia (Severobaikalsky, Barguzinsky, Pribaikalsky districts) and Irkutsk region (Olkhon Island) obtained in 2009–2014.
