Avena fatua and A. ludoviciana (commonly known as wild oats) are the most problematic winter grass species in fallows and winter crops in the northeast region of Australia. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of glyphosate and alternative post-emergence herbicides on A. fatua and A. ludoviciana. This study reports the world’s first glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotypes of A. fatua and A. ludoviciana. The glyphosate dose required to kill 50% of the plants (LD50) and to reduce 50% of the biomass (GR50) for the GR biotype of A. fatua was 556 g a.e./ha and 351 g a.e./ha, respectively. These values for A. ludoviciana were 848 g a.e./ha and 289 g a.e./ha. Regardless of the growth stage (3–4 or 6–7 leaf stages), clethodim (120 g a.i./ha), haloxyfop (78 g a.i./ha), pinoxaden (20 g a.i./ha), and propaquizafop (30 g a.i./ha) were the best alternative herbicide options for the control of A. fatua and A. ludoviciana. The efficacy of butroxydim (45 g a.i./ha), clodinafop (120 g a.i./ha), imazamox + imazapyr (36 g a.i./ha), and paraquat (600 g a.i./ha) reduced at the advanced growth stage. Glufosinate (750 g a.i./ha), flamprop (225 g a.i./ha), and pyroxsulam + halauxifen (20 g a.i./ha) did not provide effective control of Avena species. This study identified alternative herbicide options to manage GR biotypes of A. fatua and A. ludoviciana.

The study was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University campus to document the diversity and abundance of pollinators of five commonly grown winter crops, viz., mustard, coriander, niger, black cumin and linseed from October 2020 to February 2021. A total number of fifteen species was identified under eleven genera, nine subfamilies, nine families and seven super families. The study revealed that honey bees, halictids, nymphalids, coccinellids, butterflies and dipterans of genera Apis, Halictus, Lasioglossum, Aglais, Coccinella, Pieris, Eurema, Musca, Syrphid and Calliphora belonging to the families Apidae, Halictidae, Nymphalidae, Coccinellidae, Pieridae, Muscidae, Syrphidae and Calliphoridae, respectively were present in the field. The species diversity was high in mustard with 15 species while it was low in linseed (5 species). The honey bees, Apis sp. and sweat bees, Halictus sp. were common pollinators of all five oilseed crops, while the housefly, Musca domestica was specific to mustard. The honey bee, Apis sp. was predominant among all the insect pollinators in five oilseed crops. Abstract The purpose of the study is to substantiate the relative position of the working bodies of a combined machine for non-fall tillage of winter crops. The design scheme and the principle of operation of the combined machine are given. The basic principles and methods of classical mechanics, mathematical analysis and statistics were used in this study. It is established that the most optimal design scheme of a combined machine for non-tillage of the soil and its preparation for sowing of repeated crops is considered to be a scheme consisting of non-tillage cases with crushers, a battery with cut-out spherical disks and a roller. According to the results of theoretical and experimental studies, it was found that with a longitudinal distance between the shaft-free bodies of 40 cm and a transverse distance of 90 cm, a longitudinal distance from the toe of the ploughshare to the center of the support wheel of 50 cm and a longitudinal distance from the toe of the ploughshare of the shaft-free body to the axis of rotation of the cut-out spherical disk of 120 cm, a longitudinal distance from the axis of rotation of the cut-out spherical disk to the center of the roller of 75 cm, high-quality tillage with minimal energy costs is provided.

Abstract The selection of green manure crops for the zones with insufficient and unstable moisture is an urgent issue of agriculture. The purpose of the work is to establish the influence of the species composition of green manure on soil fertility. The research on southern low-humus chernozem was conducted in FSBI “Research institute of agricultural chemistry” in 2016-2019. The climate of the area is continental, semi-arid. The average annual air temperature is 10.8°C, the amount of precipitation is 428 mm. Conducting the experiment, statistical processing of data was performed according to B.A. Dospekhov. Layout of the variants - systematic, repetition is three times. The area of the plots is 720 m2. The subject of the research is agrocenoses of green manure crops. The object of the study is the soil fertility change processes. Agrocenoses of winter rye and triticale, melilot and sainfoin ensured the highest dry matter yield (6-6.3 t/ha). The maximum entry of organic matter into the soil occurred when using agrocenoses of winter rye - 5.88 t/ha and triticale - 5.72 t/ha. Mixture of crops on the entry of organic matter into the soil was inferior to rye and triticale, but outperformed vetch by 17.9%. The greatest amount of nitrogen was contained in the biomass of melilot and Sainfoin - 156 and 142 kg/ha, and in the mixture of winter crops - 108 kg/ha of nitrogen. The mixture combined the positive properties of its constituent crops: high and stable yield of dry and organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Due to mineralization of the organic matter of green manure crops, there was an increase in nitrate nitrogen in the arable horizon from 1.0-2.4 to 12.0-22.8 mg/kg of soil.

Resources like air and water are present in the Ecosystem for the benefit of biological life, but a slight disturbance in them results in catastrophic calamities; the flood is one of them. Floods are wrecking threats not only to the life of the individuals but also result in long-term destructions to the economy, environment, and the psychological state of the affected individuals. A slight disturbance in a geographical area's climatic conditions and natural cycles like heavy rainfall and extra precipitation result in floods. Other human activities like over urbanization, deforestation to make residential societies, poor drainage systems, poor number of dams and banks are also the reasons behind such drastic calamities. There are many types of floods, but urban floods are more destructive as they affect highly populated areas, and there are more chances of mortalities in such situations. Floods have broad impacts not only socially and economically but also on the environment. Floods affect the agricultural sector by causing over-saturation, infertility, and soil erosion, damaging the crop fields, especially the winter crops. Flood contaminates the groundwater and makes it impure and improper for drinking purposes. Floods contaminate groundwater with pathogenic microbes and result in water-borne diseases, which have detrimental effects on health. The freshwater's aquatic life is also affected by the disturbance of the natural hydrology of the water. According to some reports, Floods have some positive Impacts on aquatic life as it results in nutrient deposition and favorable habitat for most species. Floods also leave after-effects on the microinvertebrates like small insects, which are primary role players in the Ecosystem's food chain. So, the floods are a curse for some and a blessing for others.

Abstract The aim of the research was to create an effective method for producing transgenic wheat plants suitable for a wide range of promising varieties, both spring and winter crops. The plant material was cultivated at temperatures ranging from 4 to 25°C, either in the dark or in the light, with a 16-hour photoperiod (16/8 - day / night). Osram L36/77 FLUORA and F36W/33 Cool White lamps were used for lighting. The composition of all nutrient media included macroand micro-salts, vitamins B5, phytohormones and carbohydrates. The pH of the medium was adjusted to 5.8 before autoclaving. The medium was sterilized in an autoclave at pressure of 1.2 atmospheres for 15 minutes. An effective method of regeneration of transgenic wheat plants for ballistic transformation has been developed. Plants obtained by this method are phenotypically normal and fully fertile. The transgenic insertion of the target gene is transmitted to the offspring in accordance with Mendel’s laws. The transformation efficiency was high for all the studied varieties and ranged from 1.4 to 7.8%.

Biomass production in marginal lands represents one of the most challenging and promising alternatives to sustainably produce biofuels. Native species seem to be the most adequate option to obtain a profitable output when low-input techniques are applied, and biomass is grown in depleted soils and harsh climatic conditions. In this study, a 5-year field trial in the island of Majorca served to investigate different autochthonous and naturalized Mediterranean perennial grasses as novel candidate lignocellulosic bioenergy crops for the semi-arid Mediterranean area and compare them with commercial ones (both Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean). Species and growing season had a significant effect on biomass production, perennialism and biomass quality. Arundo donax (winter crops) and Piptatherum miliaceum (autumn crops) performed better than the commercial species tested (Panicum virgatum for winter crops and Festuca arundinacea for autumn crops) in biomass production and perennialism. In terms of biomass quality, Panicum virgatum was the best species, having high structural content (mainly cellulose and hemicellulose), low non-structural content and the lowest ash. However, Ampelodesmos mauritanicus and Arundo donax rendered similar results, with no significant difference in terms of cellulose production for this latter but with higher lignin content. For the autumn species, Festuca arundinacea was the species with the best biomass quality but with the highest ash production for all the species considered. Hence, both for winter or autumn regimes, native or naturalized plants seem to be better suited than the commercial commonly used for biomass production with energy-producing purposes. Further research must be conducted in terms of seed biology and physiology, seedbed preparation methods, sowing time, seedling density and weed control before they can firmly be proposed as adequate alternatives for energy purposes.

Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus L.), one of the main weeds found among winter crops in Poland, has developed herbicide resistance (HR) to acetolactate synthase (ALS) herbicides, a finding first reported in 2006, and in recent years, farmers have been complaining about inadequate chemical control of this weed. This study aimed to characterise the current state of cornflower HR to ALS inhibitors and synthetic auxins in Poland and the agricultural practices in fields with herbicide-resistant populations. From 2017 to 2020, 159 seed samples together with the field history were collected across the country and biological tests performed in glasshouses. This revealed that 47 populations of C. cyanus were cross-resistant to both tribenuron and florasulam, 28 and 8 populations were single resistant to tribenuron and florasulam, respectively, and 3 populations had developed multiple resistance to both ALS inhibitors and synthetic auxins, i.e., 2,4-D and dicamba. Resistant populations were found mostly frequent in northern Poland, but also in the eastern and western parts of the country. Based on a survey of farmers, the resistant populations were found in winter crops regardless of the tillage system (77% of fields with HR cornflower were mouldboard ploughed). Based on the proposed population treatment (PT) index showing the frequency of herbicide use during three consecutive seasons on farms with HR cornflower, the average PT for all the surveyed farms was 5.4. The highest PT of 7.4 was found in the province of Warmia-Masuria in northern Poland.

Sentinel-2 imagery is an unprecedented data source with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution in addition to free access. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the potential of using Sentinel-2 data to map winter crops in the early growth stage. Analysis of three winter crop types—winter garlic, winter canola and winter wheat—was carried out in two agricultural regions of China. We analysed the spectral characteristics and vegetation index profiles of these crops in the early growth stage and other land cover types based on Sentinel-2 images. A decision tree classification model was built to distinguish the crops based on these data. The results demonstrate that winter garlic and winter wheat can be distinguished four months before harvest, while winter canola can be distinguished two months before harvest. The overall classification accuracy was 96.62% with a kappa coefficient of 0.95. Therefore, Sentinel-2 images can be used to accurately identify these winter crops in the early growth stage, making them an important data source in the field of agricultural remote sensing.
