Spatial analysis of road traffic accident hotspots: evaluation and validation of recent approaches using road safety audit

Introduction: Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the eighth leading cause of death globally, and the leading cause of death in Bangladesh. The road safety situation in Bangladesh has been deteriorating with increasing number of road accident deaths, largely as direct consequences of rapid growth in population, motorization, urbanization and lack of investment in road safety. Objectives: To describe the injury characteristics of road traffic accidents cases that reported at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional hospital based study was conducted on all the RTA cases reported to medical inspection room CMH, Dhaka from 01 March to 30 June 2010. A total of 126 RTA victims irrespective of age and sex were included, data were collected by face to face interview using a pre-tested questionnaire. Results: A total of 126 road traffic accident victims both sexes were studied. The majority of the study subjects were men 103 (81.7%) and most of them were in 31-40 years group (27%), Muslims (98.41%) were the majority. In our study regarding educational qualification of RTA victims most of them were SSC qualified (44’4%) and primary level (15.1%). Military services holder (45.2%) was the majority of road traffic crash victims. Bus/Minibus (32.5%) was responsible for the majority of road traffic crashes and motor vehicle passengers (42.9%) were main victims. Laceration & cut injury were (38.1%) and multiple injury (18.3%) were the most common injury. Main roads (49.2%) were the commonest site of the accidents.  Regarding place of occurrence main roads 62 (49.2%) was the most common site and noon 41 (32.5%) was the most common time of occurrence of accidents. Conclusion: Road traffic crashes constitute a major public health problem in our setting and contribute significantly to unacceptably high morbidity and mortality. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of road traffic crashes is necessary to reduce the morbidity and mortality resulting from these injuries. Brazil is in fifth place among countries with the highest number of land transport accidents. The state of Paraná, Brazil, was the object of this study which conducted spatial analysis with the aim of identifying areas where this phenomenon occurs more and their time series over a 10-year period. This was an ecological and exploratory observational study covering the period 2007 to 2016 in 39 micro-regions of the state of Paraná. Data of road traffic accident deaths as per the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10, codes V01 to V89) held on the Mortality Information System, were analyzed. Relative risk rates were calculated and choropleth maps were built. A total of 31,651 deaths from the causes examined were recorded according to municipality of occurrence. The most frequent ICD-10 items found were those involving automobile occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists in road traffic accidents. An overall falling trend was found with effect from 2012. The rate by area did not show pronounced spatial dependence and there was considerable variation, whereby the Cerro Azul micro-region had the lowest relative risk in the period, while in Campo Mourão deaths were around 53.3% above the expected level. The estimated average annual trend for the Curitiba micro-region had the steepest fall in the period, while Campo Mourão had the highest rising trend. The trend analysis indicated places where more robust public policy interventions and enforcement actions need to be reviewed.

Road safety is the main problem in developing countries. Every year, millions of people die in road traffic accidents, resulting in huge losses of humankind and the economy. This study focuses on the road traffic accident analysis and identification of black spots on the Lahore-Islamabad Highway M-2. Official data of road traffic accidents were collected from National Highway and Highway Police (NH & MP) Pakistan. The data was digitized on MS Excel and Origin Pro. The accident Point weightage (APW) method was employed to identify the black spots and rank of the top ten black spots. The analysis shows that the trend of road traffic accidents on M-2 was characterized by a high rate of fatal accidents of 35.3%. Human errors account for 66.8% as the major contributing factors in road traffic accidents, while vehicle errors (25.6%) and environmental factors (7.6%) were secondary and tertiary contributing factors. The main causes of road traffic accidents were the dozing on the wheel (27.9%), the careless driving (24.6%), tyre burst (11.7%), and the brakes failure (7.4%). Kallar Kahar (Salt Range) was identified as a black spot (223 km, 224 km, 225 km, 229 km, and 234 km) due to vehicle brake failure. Background: As per global status report on road safety 2015, 1.25 million road traffic deaths occurred every year. Most common cause of death among those aged 15-29 years was road traffic accidents. The objectives of the study were to study the socio-demographic profile of the victims of road traffic accidents, to identify the risk factors responsible for road traffic accidents and to identify the various presenting injuries of road traffic accident victims.Methods: It was a Hospital based cross sectional study. Victims of road traffic accidents attending casualty during July 2011 – June 2012 were studied. A pretested semi structured questionnaire was administered. A total of 280 road traffic accident victims were interviewed during the study period. Data was entered in Microsoft excel sheet and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Results were expressed as proportions for different study variables.Results: Out of the 280 victims, majority 206 (73.57%) of study participants were males. The highest numbers of victims (34.20%) were between 21-30 years of age group. 40.71% were using two wheelers. Most of the accidents took place in the evening (6 pm to 12 am) i.e. 39.10%. Most common site of presenting injury was lower limb (40.71%). In this study 22.5% were under influence of alcohol while driving.Conclusions: Road traffic accidents were more in young age groups and in males. Road safety education should be promoted.

Introduction: Road traffic accident is alarming in Nepal. The objective of this research is to find out the characteristics of RTA in central part of Nepal.Methods: A prospective descriptive study was taken from 1 August 2014 to 31 July 2015. Data were collected from postmortem department and nine hospitals in Kathmandu Valley. Inventory sheets with targeted variables for secondary sources were created.Results: A total of 3461 morbidity cases from hospitals and 265 mortality cases from postmortem department were included in this study. The ratio of male victim to female was 2.3:1. Around 75% of victims were between 15-49 years old. Pedestrians were the most vulnerable (33%) followed by riders of motorized 2-3 wheelers. Two wheeler motorized vehicles were most frequently (67.2%)involved in RTAs. More RTA occurred on daytime, Saturdays, July and November. Around half of the victims did not arrive in hospitals in one hour. The most common injury type was soft tissue injury (37.6%), followed by open wound (20.9%), fracture (18%) and traumatic brain injuries (12.7%).Conclusions: According to the characteristic of RTA found in this study, following preventive measures are recommended Helmet was necessary for two wheeled backseat riders. Road safety education towards age group of 15-49 was compulsory. Precaution should neither be omitted regarding road safety on weekends, holidays, nor in rainy and festival season. In order to establish objective criteria for road traffic accident (RTA) hotspots, this paper examines the application of three different hotspot analysis methods to both identify and rank the RTA hotspots. The three methods selected are the network Kernel Density Estimation (KDE+) method, the Getis-Ord GI* method, and a recently proposed risk-based method that accounts for RTA frequency, severity and socioeconomic costs - STAA method. The study road, Jalan Tutong, is a major dual-carriageway connecting major residential and commercial areas from the west of Brunei-Muara district and beyond to the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The RTA data consists of cases reported to the police during a 5-year period from 2012 to 2016. The RTA data were digitised and prepared, before being imported into ESRI ArcGIS 10.2 software for analysis using each of these methods. The outcomes, particularly the location, extent and priority of the RTA hotspots, are subsequently compared to results from road safety audits, in order to determine the relative merits and drawbacks of each method. The findings from the comparative study would be useful to recommend the most suitable method to identify and rank the RTA hotspots for the study road.
