The first article of this series showed that it was possible to express mathematically the phenomenon of cicatrization. The principal point consisted in determining by means of an equation, a constant, or index, characterizing each wound. The calculation had to be made for each patient for each wound, and required two observations, 4 days apart. The index having proved to be a continuous function of the size of the wound and of the age of the patient, of the form See PDF for Equation where S is the area, i the index, a a decimal exponent, and K a constant, it was then possible to draw a chart by means of which this index i could be obtained without calculation. The advantage of the new way of determining the index is, above all, that this index is a general, average, normal index, and no longer an individual index. Hence, the differences between the observed rate of cicatrization of man and the normal rate may give some indication of the general state of the patient. Another advantage is that the determination of the index is no longer controlled by the temporary accidents which may happen between the two observations of S and S'.

A sample of 47 MZ and 49 DZ pairs of Brazilian twins was investigated in relation to school achievement in six specific areas of study, as well as performance in the test of Dominoes, the Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT) and Griéger's Characterological Questionnaire. Significant F-ratios (variance within DZ/variance within MZ) were observed for the school grades obtained in five of the six areas considered, as well as for their general average; the same being true for the results on the indicated measure of general intelligence, six of the eight DAT tests, and two of the characterological elements. There is a clear positive relationship between the grades earned by the twins and their performance in the Dominoes test. Achievement in Portuguese and foreign language correlates positively with DAT's Sentences; and achievement in mathematics correlates positively with DAT's Numerical Ability, Abstract Reasoning, and Clerical Speed and Accuracy. The results show an agreement with previous estimates of the genetic determination of these variables, which is to a certain extent surprising if we consider the differences in sample sizes, age, and degree of schooling of the subjects, environmental differences, and the dissimilarities which exist between the homes and school systems of USA, Europe, and Brazil.

Frontal analysis gives retention volumes of basic dyes on acrylic fabric, rolled and inserted into a liquid chromatography column. The retention volumes indicate differences in adsorption and therefore in compatibilities of standard dye mixtures. A simple and useful relation, Cv = Cvo + mR - Cv,0, results where m is a parameter fitted to the data, Cv0 is the compatibility difference between Cvo and Cv when R = 0 ( i.e., elution times are identical), and Cvo is the compatibility of one of the two dyes in the mixture. Hence, a new approach is proposed that not only allows determination of Cv using frontal analysis with an LC apparatus, but also defines compatibility in an objective manner as a continuous function.

The processes of fermentation, accompanied by the growth and development of several species of microorganisms, are often accompanied by a change of some species of microorganisms for anothers , such a complex "behavior" of microorganisms during fermentation needs to be be deeply researched. The previously used approaches of evaluation of the type of interaction of particulate monocultures in consortiums make it possible to obtain only qualitative results (synergistic, antagonistic, additive interaction) generally, without taking into the consideration the change of this interaction during the cultivation. The purpose of the research was the development of a new approach of the quantitative determination of the parameter of the interaction of microorganisms of one species with another species expressed as a continuous function determined throughout the all fermentation period. In the process of the work a two-component consortium of lactic acid microorganisms Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum was selected, cultivated in two different model media as part of a study of directed fermentation of vegetable products. The work the cultivation of monocultures (included in the studied consortium) was also carried out. The performed work the original approach was developed, the approach is based on a comparison of the growth rate of the microorganisms biomass of the consortium with the calculated additive dynamics. This approach is convenient to use to identify a complex regularity of changes of the types of interaction of microorganisms in the consortium in the form of a continuous function determined during the entire cultivation period. From the point of view of the synergies of the species of microorganisms entering the studied consortium in the active phase of fermentation, the "Slava" variety turned to be more profitable than the "Parus".

The present memoir is the outcome of an attempt to obtain the conditions under which a given symmetric and continuous function k ( s, t ) is definite, in the sense of Hilbert. At an early stage, however, it was found that the class of definite functions was too restricted to allow the determination of necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the determinants of § 10. The discovery that this could be done for functions of positive or negative type, and the fact that almost all the theorems which are true of definite functions are, with slight modification, true of these, led finally to the abandonment of the original plan in favour of a discussion of the properties of functions belonging to the wider classes. The first part of the memoir is devoted to the definition of various terms employed, and to the re-statement of the consequences which follow from Hilbert’s theorem.

We consider the impact of direct democracy on state public policy by examining whether initiatives alter the effects of predictors in models of general state policy liberalism. These analyses are couched in Erikson, Wright, and McIver's (1993) opinion liberalism model of state public policy, as augmented by Gray et al.'s (2004) inclusion of measures of organized interests. After presenting our theoretical expectations, we test the different ways that public opinion, organized interests, and initiatives can interact in the determination of public policy with a variety of models. We find little evidence that initiatives alter the congruence between opinion and policy.
