A layer-peeling method for signal trapping correction in planar LII measurements of statistically steady flames

Abstract This work presents a layer-peeling (LP) algorithm to correct the signal trapping effect in planar laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements of soot volume fraction. The method is based on measurements of LII signals captured by an intensified CCD camera at a series of parallel planes across a diffusion flame. A method based on presumed function (PF) of soot volume fraction is also proposed for comparison. The presented methods are numerically tested based on synthetic LII signals emitted from a simulated axisymmetric laminar diffusion flame using the CoFlame code. Numerical results showed that the LP method is able to correct the signal trapping effect, even for fairly large optical thicknesses and in a wide range of detection wavelengths. The correction decreases the relative errors induced by neglecting the trapping effect considerably. The signal trapping effect correction is less important for the determination of integrated soot quantities such as radially integrated soot volume fraction or total soot loading. Planar LII measurements were carried out and calibrated in order to test the method experimentally in a coflow flame. The LP, PF and a simplified analytical (SA) model were compared. The results indicate that the differences in soot volume fraction of 1 ppm or about 15% are obtained in zones of maximum soot loading of 6.5 ppm when the trapping effect is accounted for. Also, the LP and SA methods were found computationally efficient and accurate compared to the PF method. Although the study was performed in a canonical laminar axisymmetric flame, the proposed method can be applied to any statistically steady 3D flame.

Filtered Rayleigh Scattering (FRS) is demonstrated in a premixed, sooting ethylene-air flame. In sooting flames, traditional laser-based temperature-imaging techniques such linear (unfiltered) Rayleigh scatting (LRS) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) are rendered intractable due to intense elastic scattering interferences from in-flame soot. FRS partially overcomes this limitation by utilizing a molecular iodine filter in conjunction with an injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser, where the seeded laser output is tuned to line center of a strong iodine absorption transition. A significant portion of the Doppler-broadened molecular Rayleigh signal is then passed while intense soot scattering at the laser line is strongly absorbed. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of FRS for sooting flame thermometry using a premixed, ethylene-air flat flame. We present filtered and unfiltered laser light-scattering images, FRS temperature data, and laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements of soot volume fraction for fuel-air equivalence ratios of φ = 2.19 and 2.24. FRS-measured product temperatures for these flames are nominally 1500 K. The FRS temperature and image data are discussed in the context of the soot LII results and a preliminary estimate of the upper sooting limit for our FRS system of order 0.1 ppm volume fraction is obtained.

Laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements carried out in aerosols having a large particle volume fraction must be corrected to account for extinction between the energized aerosol particles and the detector, called signal trapping. While standard correction techniques have been developed for signal trapping by absorption, the effect of scattering on LII measurements requires further investigation, particularly the case of highly anisotropic scattering and along a path of relatively large optical thickness. This paper examines this phenomenon in an aerosol containing highly aggregated soot particles by simulating LII signals using a backward Monte Carlo analysis; these signals are then used to recover the soot particle temperature and soot volume fraction. The results show that inscattered radiation is a substantial component of the LII signal under high soot loading conditions, which can strongly influence properties derived from these measurements. Correction techniques based on Bouguer’s law are shown to be effective in mitigating the effect of scatter on the LII signals.

This paper reports an investigation of soot formation in ethylene-air partially premixed flames over a wide range of premixedness. An axisymmetric co-flow configuration is chosen to establish partially premixed flames from the fully non-premixed to fully premixed conditions. Reducing the fuel flow rate as a percentage of the maximum from the core stream and supplying the same to the annular stream leads to stratification of the reactant concentrations. The thermal power, overall equivalence ratio, and the average velocity in the both streams are maintained constant under all conditions. The soot volume fraction is estimated by light attenuation method, and laser induced incandescence is performed to map the soot distribution in the flow field. The soot volume fraction is observed to exhibit a ‘S’-type trend as the conditions are traversed from near the premixed to the non-premixed regimes. That is, when traversing from the non-premixed to near-premixed regime, below 60% fuel flow rate in core, the soot volume fraction drops drastically. The onset of sooting in the partially premixed flames is clearly seen to be at the tip of the rich-premixed flame branch of their triple flame structure, which advances upstream towards the base of the flame as the premixing is reduced. The ‘S’-type variation is clearly the effect of partial premixing, more specifically due to the presence of the lean premixed flame branch of the triple flame. Laser induced incandescence intensities are insufficient to capture the upstream advance of the soot onset with decreased premixedness. So, a quick and inexpensive technique to isolate soot luminescence through flame imaging is presented in the paper involving quasi-simultaneous imaging with a 650 nm and a BG-3 filter using a normal color camera.

In this work a single sector lean burn model combustor operating in pilot only mode has been investigated using both experiments and computations with the main objective of analyzing the flame structure and soot formation at conditions relevant to aero-engine applications. Numerical simulations were performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach and the Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) combustion model with detailed chemistry and a two-equation model for soot. The CMC model is based on the time-resolved solution of the local flame structure and allows to directly take into account the phenomena associated to molecular mixing and turbulent transport which are of great importance for the prediction of emissions. The rig investigated in this work, called Big Optical Single Sector (BOSS) rig, allows to test real scale lean burn injectors. Experiments, performed at elevated pressure and temperature, corresponding to engine conditions at part load, include OH-PLIF and PDA and have been complemented with new LII measurements for soot location. The wide range of measurements available allows a comprehensive analysis of the primary combustion region and can be exploited to further assess and validate the LES/CMC approach to capture the flame behaviour at engine conditions. It is shown that the LES/CMC approach is able to predict the main characteristics of the flame with a good agreement with the experiment in terms of flame shape, spray characteristics and soot location. Finite-rate chemistry effects appear very important in the region very close to the injector exit leading to the lift-off of the flame. Low levels of soot are observed immediately downstream of the injector exit, where a high amount of vaporized fuel is still present. Further downstream, the fuel vapour disappears quite quickly and an extended region characterised by the presence of pyrolysis products and soot precursors is observed. The strong production of soot precursors together with high soot surface growth rates lead to high values of soot volume fraction in locations consistent with the experiment. Soot oxidation is also very important in the downstream region resulting in a decrease of the soot level at the combustor exit. The results show a very promising capability of the LES/CMC approach to capture the main characteristics of the flame, soot formation and location at engine relevant conditions. More advanced soot models will be considered in future work in order to improve the quantitative prediction of the soot level.

A numerical investigation of the transient development of flame and soot distributions in a laminar axisymmetric coflowing diffusion flame of methane in air has been carried out considering the air preheating effect. The gas phase conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentrations along with the conservation equations of soot mass concentration and number density are solved simultaneously, with appropriate boundary conditions, by an explicit finite difference method. Average soot diameters are then calculated from these results. It is observed that the soot is formed in the flame when the temperature exceeds 1300 K. The contribution of surface growth toward soot formation is more significant compared with that of nucleation. Once the soot particles reach the high temperature oxygen-enriched zone beyond the flame, the soot oxidation becomes important. During the initial period, when soot oxidation is not contributing significantly, some of the soot particles escape into the atmosphere. However, under steady condition the exhaust product gas is nonsooty. Preheating of air increases the soot volume fraction significantly. This is both due to more number of soot particles and the increase in the average diameter. However, preheating of air does not cause a qualitative difference in the development of the soot-laden zone during the flame transient period.

Although diffusion flame is free from many problems associated with premixed flame, soot formation is a major problem in diffusion flame. The techniques of dilution of fuel or air with inert gases such as nitrogen and argon are used to decrease soot level in the flame. In this work, a CFD code has been developed to predict the flame height, soot volume fraction and soot number density in an axisymmetric laminar confined methane-air diffusion flame after diluting the fuel with nitrogen. The temperatures of the air and fuel at inlet are taken as 300K. Mass flow rate of the fuel stream is considered as 3.71×10−6 kg/s and mass flow rate of the air is taken as 2.2104×10−6 kg/s. The total mass flow rate through the central jet (fuel jet) is, however, kept constant. The radiation effect is also included through an optically thin radiation model. An explicit finite difference technique has been adopted for the numerical solution of reacting flow and two equations soot model with variable thermodynamic and transport properties. The prediction shows that flame height decreases with the addition of nitrogen to the fuel. Temperature of the flame is considerably reduced in the given computational domain. Both soot volume fraction and soot number density decrease with dilution by adding nitrogen in the fuel jet. The soot formation at different nitrogen dilution level of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% are plotted and the soot get considerably reduced as the concentration of nitrogen is increased in the fuel stream.
