The role of geometric factor in the course of skeletal reactions (isomerization, hydrogenolysis) of 2-methylpentane on stepped (119), (557) and reconstructed R(557) surfaces of single crystals of platinum was evaluated with computer designed models. These calculations were compared with reported experimental data. It was found by analysis of geometric conditions that there are accessible active ensembles on double step of the reconstructed R(557) surface. In addition, these active sites are unsaturated in their coordination sphere and thus catalytically effective. This finding is consistent with published data, confirming higher catalytic activity of this surface. The various pathways of Bond Shift isomerization mechanism of 2-methylpentane from the point of view of steric demands of surface intermediates on differently located ensembles are discussed, too.

An experimental study was performed to investigate the combustion instability characteristics of swirl-stabilized combustors. A premixed gas composed of ethylene and air was burned under various flow and geometric conditions. Experiments were conducted by changing the inlet mean velocity, equivalence ratio, swirler vane angle, and combustor length. Two dynamic pressure sensors, a hot-wire anemometer, and a photomultiplier tube were installed to detect the pressure oscillations, velocity perturbations, and heat release fluctuations in the inlet and combustion chambers, respectively. An ICCD camera was used to capture the time-averaged flame structure. The objective was to understand the relationship between combustion instability and the Rayleigh criterion/the flame structure. When combustion instability occurred, the pressure oscillations were in-phase with the heat release oscillations. Even if the Rayleigh criterion between the pressure and heat release oscillations was satisfied, stable combustion with low pressure fluctuations was possible. This was explained by analyzing the dynamic flow and combustion data. The root-mean-square value of the heat release fluctuations was observed to predict the combustion instability region better than that of the inlet velocity fluctuations. The bifurcation of the flame structure was a necessary condition for combustion instability in this combustor. The results shed new insight into combustion instability in swirl-stabilized combustors.

In this paper, a novel 3-degree-of-freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator that can perform three rotations around the remote centre is presented. The theory of screws and reciprocal screws is employed for the analysis of the geometric conditions. In particular, using circular guide to instead of R joints, so that has the advantage of enabling continuous 360° revolute around Z-axis. The inverse kinematics of mechanism is given and the workspace has a good performance. To compare with the machine constructed with traditional joints, it has the advantage of high rigidity and precision.

Abstract In this study, two recent algorithms, the whale optimization algorithm and moth-flame optimization, are used to optimize spur gear design. The objective function is the minimization of the total weight of the spur gear pair. Moreover, the optimization problem is subjected to constraints on the main kinematic and geometric conditions as well as to the resistance of the material of the gear system. The comparison between moth-flame optimization (MFO), the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and previous studies indicate that the final results obtained from both algorithms lead to a reduction in gear weight by 1.05 %. MFO and the WOA are compared with four additional swarm algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the algorithms introduced here, in particular MFO, outperform the four other methods when compared in terms of solution quality, robustness, and high success rate.

Increasing demand for railway vehicle speed has pushed the railway track designers to develop high-quality track. An important measure of track quality is the character of the transition curve track connecting different intersecting straight tracks. A good transition curve track must be able to negotiate the intermittent stresses and dynamic effects caused by changes in lateral acceleration at high speed. This paper presents the constructional methods for planning transition curves considering the dynamics of movement. These methods consider the non-compensated lateral acceleration, deviation in lateral acceleration and its higher time derivatives. This paper discusses the laying methods of circular, vertical and transition curves. Key aspects in laying a curved track e.g. widening of gauge on curves are discussed in this paper. This paper also suggests a transition curve which is effective not only from a dynamic point of view considering lateral acceleration and its higher time derivative but also consider the geometric conditions along with the required deflection angle.

Abstract This paper addresses instantaneous motion characteristics of wheeled vehicles systems on even and uneven terrain. A thorough kinematic geometric approach which utilizes screw system theory is used to investigate vehicle-terrain combinations as spatial mechanisms that possess multiple closed kinematic chains. It is shown that if the vehicle-terrain combination satisfies certain geometric conditions, for instance when the vehicle operates on even terrain, the system becomes singular or non-Kutzbachian — it possesses finite range mobility that is different from the one obtained using Kutzbach criterion. An application of this geometric approach to the study of rate kinematics of various classes of wheeled vehicles is also included. This approach provides an integrated framework to study the kinematic effects of varying the vehicle and/or terrain geometric parameters from their nominal values. In addition, design enhancements of existing vehicles are suggested using this approach. This kinematic study is closely related to the force distribution characteristics of wheeled vehicles which is the subject of the companion paper [SN96].
