The evolution of the wind turbine to generate carbon-free renewable energy is rapidly growing. Thus, performing maintenance and inspection tasks in high altitude environments or difficult to access places, and even bad weather conditions, poses a problem for the periodic inspection process of the wind turbine industry. This paper describes the design and development of a scaled-down prototype climbing robot for wind turbine maintenance to perform critical tower operations. Thus, the unique feature of this maintenance robot is the winding mechanism, which uses a tension force to grip on the tower surface without falling to the ground either in static or dynamic situations, with the locomotion to perform a straight up–down motion in a circular truncated cone and the stability to work at significant heights. The robot computer-aided design (CAD) model of the mechanical mechanism, force and structural analysis, and the testing of the prototype model, are addressed in this paper. The key hardware developments that were utilized to build a low-cost, reliable and compact climbing robot are the embedded microprocessors, brushed DC motors, stepper motors and steel rope. This paper concludes with a successful preliminary experiment of a scaled down prototype proving the functionality of the concept. The potential applications for this robot are industrial maintenance, inspection and exploration, security and surveillance, cleaning, painting, and welding at extreme height conditions.

Fever is a common symptom of many infections, e.g., in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, keeping monitoring devices such as thermometers in constant demand. Recent technological advancements have made infrared (IR) thermometers the choice for contactless screening of multiple individuals. Yet, even so, the measurement accuracy of such thermometers is affected by many factors including the distance from the volunteers’ forehead, impurities (such as sweat), and the location measured on the volunteers’ forehead. To overcome these factors, we describe the assembly of an Arduino-based digital IR thermometer with distance correction using the MLX90614 IR thermometer and HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors. Coupled with some analysis of these factors, we also found ways to programme compensation methods for the final assembled digital IR thermometer to provide more accurate readings and measurements.

There are many integrated perimeter security solutions available, the main objective of this paper is to provide cost effective solution. This paper mainly focuses on design of a Low-cost vibration module with RS485 interface, Controller hub with RS485 interface and Ethernet interface and a Command Centre server. The platform consists of RS485 daisy chained vibration sensor network connected to control server via Controller hub. It is designed to pin point the area of intrusion and cueing the camera to that specified location. It can be integrated with smart devices like PTZ/Thermal/IR cameras or radars. Each daisy chain consists of 250 sensors with each sensor 3 metres apart, each ethernet hub can handle 2 daisy chains. The Controller hub gets vibration sensor information via RS485 and transmits data to Command centre using TCP/IP protocol. The Controller centre identifies the location of the sensor and moves the PTZ camera to the specific location and live streams the data to the user.
