Abstract Crushed ice backfills are widely used in the regions of the North. There, in natural conditions in winter, it can be easily prepared for the subsequent arrangement and repair of damaged temporary road surfaces, sealing cracks in the ice layer, backfilling with over-ice water and for the formation of ice refrigerant reserves in refrigerated food storage facilities.

It is a problem of the ice with transient heat of the solidification and melting which usually is a part of "phase change" or "moving boundary". The paper is a research about measurement and analysis of the icing in the rectangular tank outdoor under natural conditions, the paper adopts the method which combines theoretical analysis with experimental verification to establish a mathematical model of the unstable-state and dynamic cool storage in one-dimensional rectangular coordinate system. Conclusion is drawn that the thickness of water icing in the natural conditions according to the change of the time and environmental condition, which provide a theoretical basis to determine the best program of the frozen, the frozen time and the best size of the frozen container. It is helpful for the further research of the icing store in the winter ice and make the best of natural resources in the north winter.

AbstractRecent concerns regarding potential effects of pesticides on pollinators have prompted regulatory agencies to estimate dietary ingestion rates for honey bees (Apis mellifera). The task is difficult because of the complex caste and food storage systems in honey bee colonies. Considerable data on the nutrition and energetics of honey bees have recently been collated. These data were used to parameterize a probabilistic model estimating nectar requirements of nectar foragers. Median estimates were more than 6× lower than the recommended median value from the North American government agencies, of 292 mg nectar/bee/day. The distribution of estimates had much greater variability than those of the agencies. The differences are due primarily to the disparate assumptions regarding how much time nectar foragers spend flying and foraging. Risk assessors considering honey bee dietary exposure should take account of current and emerging data providing insight into nectar forager dietary requirements, foraging activity, and feeding behavior.

The article discusses one of today’s challenges, namely, the decommissioning of nuclear power facilities. It summarizes the experience in the decommissioning of radioactive waste storage facilities belonging to RosRAO’s Murmansk department branch of the Northwest Territorial District providing detailed overview of pre-decommissioning activities, as well as the decommissioning operations themselves, relevant technology and technical equipment applied. Pre-decommissioning stage involved large-scale efforts (2011—2015) on accumulated RW identifi cation and its inventory taking, as well as a comprehensive engineering radiation survey. Decommissioning projects have been developed and approved, a state environmental examination has been carried out with a Sanitary and Epidemiological Statement on compliance with state sanitary and epidemiological rules and regulations issued by FMBA of Russia. The paper presents the practice of constructing some engineering structures to provide additional safety and security of RW storage facilities during their dismantlement. Particular attention was paid to the problems associated with the use of special equipment.

Abstract. As of 2017, 70 years have passed since the beginning of work at the Kolyma water-balance station (KWBS), a unique scientific research hydrological and permafrost catchment. The volume and duration (50 continuous years) of hydrometeorological standard and experimental data, characterizing the natural conditions and processes occurring in mountainous permafrost conditions, significantly exceeds any counterparts elsewhere in the world. The data are representative of the vast territory of the North-East of Russia. In 1997, the station was terminated, thereby leaving Russia without operating research watersheds in the permafrost zone. This paper describes the dataset containing the series of daily runoff from 10 watersheds with area from 0.27 to 21.3 km2, precipitation, meteorological observations, evaporation from soil and snow, snow surveys, soil thaw and freeze depths, and soil temperature for the period 1948–1997. It also highlights the main historical stages of the station's existence, its work and scientific significance, and outlines the prospects for its future, where the Kolyma water-balance station could be restored to the status of a scientific research watershed and become a valuable international center for hydrological research in permafrost. Abstract In this paper, the global distribution of cloud water based on International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), CloudSat Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR), European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim), and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) datasets is presented, and the variability of cloud water from ISCCP, the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), ERA-Interim, and CFSR data over the time period of 1995 through 2009 is discussed. The results show noticeable differences in cloud water over land and over ocean, as well as latitudinal variations. Large values of cloud water are mainly distributed over the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, eastern ITCZ, regions off the west coast of the continents as well as tropical rain forest. Cloud water path (CWP), liquid water path (LWP), and ice water path (IWP) from these datasets show a relatively good agreement in distributions and zonal means. The results of trend analyzing show an increasing trend in CWP, and also a significant increasing trend of LWP can be found in the dataset of ISCCP, ERA-Interim, and CFSR over the ocean. Besides the long-term variation trend, rises of cloud water are found when temperature and water vapor exhibit a positive anomaly. EOF analyses are also applied to the anomalies of cloud water, the first dominate mode of CWP and IWP are similar, and a phase change can be found in the LWP time coefficient around 1999 in ISCCP and CFSR and around 2002 in ERA-Interim.

The heat production of muskrats (Ondatra zibethica), oiled with varying quantities of crude oil, was measured at three ambient temperatures, −5, 5, and 10C on days 0, 1, and 3 after oiling. On day 0, the heat production of muskrats oiled with 1.9 to 42.3 g of oil was from 14 to 119% higher, respectively, than the non-oiled muskrats. Three days after oiling, the metabolic rate of oiled muskrats was about the same as the control values. A similar trend was determined for ambient temperatures of 5 and 10C. Heavy oiling increased the thermal conduction of muskrats by as much as 122%. To compensate for the loss of insulation and increased thermal conductivity of the fur, there was a 2.5-fold increase in dry-matter intake. In view of their dependence on water, both for feeding activities and a place for refuge, it is doubtful if muskrats exposed to moderate quantities of oil could survive under natural conditions.
