Numerical simulation is one of main methods for tunnel surrounding rock stability analysis. By now, there hasn’t be unanimous view on that what kind of yield criterion is adopted for different surrounding rock class and different buried depth. Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is always adopted abroad, Drucker-Prager yield criterion is always adopted in China, moreover, the principles are different when adopting D-P yield criterion at home and abroad. Based on introducing the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion and D-P yield criterions, this paper uses the M-C exterior angle point of circle criteria, which is popular in the international arena for the D-P yield criterion, and finds parameters of geotechnical material for D-P yield criterions through the parameter transformation. Combining with 3D elastic-plastic finite element simulation of the tunnel construction process, with the tunnel buried by soft and weak surrounding rock (V class) at shallow (15m) and deep (550m), this paper analyzes the impact of the M-C and D-P yield criterions on surrounding rock’s displacement, stress, strain effects, and proposes the appropriate yield criterion for the simulation of shallow and deep soft and weak rock tunnel construction and for tunnel surrounding rock stability analysis.

Based on the engineering background of Dongkeling tunnel of Guizhou-Guangzhou high-speed rail, construction process in soft surrounding rock is simulated by using finite difference software——FLAC according to large-deformation characteristics in water-rich and weathering altered granite weak surrounding rock. Several aspects, such as vault settlement, invert uplift, clearance convergence, surface settlement, the maximum and minimum principal stress of the initial support and plastic zone of surrounding rock, are analyzed to determine the tunnel stability with different construction methods.

Backed up by Dayoushan loess tunnel of Xining in Qinghai province, the displacements of vault settlement, peripheral convergence, surface deformation and post-construction settlement caused by tunnel construction are numerically simulated and analyzed. First, 2-D elastic-plastic model is founded to simulate the tunnel excavation process with up and down steps method. Second, considering the rheological characteristics of loess, 2-D visco-elastic-plastic constitutive model is founded to simulate the creep deformation of rock displacement characteristics. Finally, combined with the serious collapsible feature of loess foundation in supported project, the post-construction settlements under different conditions are simulated to obtain the settlement values of tunnel vault and bottom. The results can explain the deformation laws of tunnel displacement characteristics reasonably and show the importance of foundation reinforcement measures for loess tunnel.

In order to analyze the different construction program under the tunnel surrounding rock stress, strain and plastic zone changes, we take water tunnel group of nuclear power plant as basic project and the application of software FLACIS3D numerical simulation. The results show that: During the tunnel excavation and support group process, the different rock tunnel construction program can produce different stress, displacement and plastic zone extended range of distribution and other aspects. To interval-type excavation program, although previously disturbing effect of the excavation of the tunnel construction and tunnel excavation of rock, it can generate less impact on the stability of surrounding rock. For the latter excavation of the tunnel, the tunnel project area affected by the first digging, the stress can be released, the stability of the first excavation of the tunnel effect is also small.Comparing to sequential and parallel program-type excavation program, the use of interval-style group of rock tunnel excavation will help stabilize the body.

Suspension in tunnel construction usually cause tunnel callapse in weak ground if the suspension time is long. Dongkeling tunnel on Guizhou-Guangxi line being as the engineering background, the indoor rheological experiment and back analysis were performed to obtain the rheological model and parameters of the surrounding rock, and the 3D viscoelasto-plastic calculation model was established to find the evolving rules of deformation at critical locations under two different water contents. It was found that the primary support has little effect on rheology of tunnel work face but on the cross section, and decreasing the water content of the surrounding rock to medium or low saturation level favors the tunnel stabillity greatly for water abundent tunnels.

The surrounding rock stress field monitor has been done in excavation by vibrating wire transducer. The field monitoring data are compared with numerical simulation results. The result shows: Vibrating wire transducer can record the stress variation of surrounding rock and support. Surrounding rock stress changes violently at every excavation step, such as lower bench excavation, the stress variation is mainly controlled by the spatial effect. When the distance from excavation face to the monitoring section is more than a tunnel diameter, the rock stress variation is mainly affected by time and it is relatively smooth and continuous.
