Discovery learning is a learning situation on wich the principle content of what is tobe learned is not give but must be independly discovered by student. The effectiveness of guided discovery learning model to improve students’ critical thinking skills uses 6 indicators, are: formulating problems, formulating hypotheses, analyzing date, providing alternatives, summing up, communicating and applying principle. The guided discovery learning model was included in the effective category in terms of: (a) Improvement (N-gain) of students’ critical thinking skills by 0.65 with moderate criteria and (b) Students respond positively to learning using guided discovery learning model and its learning tools on implementation.

This research was motivated by the still limited learning of mathematics as a means of supporting learning in the 2013 Curriculum. The purpose of this study was to produce some products in the form of learning devices (syllabus, RPP and LKPD) on the material for the flat side building of VIII Middle School with discovery learning models that meet valid, practical, and effective criteria for improving students mathematical critical thinking skills. Learning tools are developed using the 4-D model, which are define, design, develop and assess. The research instrument used was an instrument of validity in the form of a validation sheet to assess the feasibility of the syllabus, RPP and LKPD as well as a practical instrument in the form of a teacher observation sheet activity in applying the discovery learning model and student questionnaire responses to assess the practicality of LKPD. The results of the validation of the experts stated that the product developed reached a valid category with an average rating of 76.67% for syllabus, 76.67% for RPP and 88.04% for LKPD. Learning devices are considered very practical in small group trials with an average response of 96.44% students and large group trials from the observation sheet of teacher activity 93.71% and the average response of students 87.77%. The learning tools have been proved to improve students mathematical critical thinking skills in terms of an average N-gain of 0.53 in the medium category.

The low level of students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS) has been the main problem of education in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the difference of students’ HOTS taught by using POE and Guided Discovery learning models. This quasi-experimental research involved 34 students of X IPA 3 and 32 students of X IPA 4 at SSHS 1 of Sungai Ambawang as the sample. The data obtained by using test which was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U-test. The results showed that the students’ HOTS who were treated with POE were significantly higher than those who were taught using Guided Discovery learning. Therefore, it is suggested to implement POE to improve students’ HOTS.

This study aimed to develop guided discovery learning-based android learning media to improve critical thinking skills. The developed biology learning media was applied to the nervous system material. The discussion of the physiology of the nervous system is one of the difficult biological materials to understand because it includes the organization and structure of neurons and their functions, ion pump mechanisms when neurons are at rest, action potential mechanisms, mechanisms for neurons to communicate with other cells in the synapses, and organization of the nervous system. This study used research and development (RD) with a method developed by Thiagarajan, namely the 4D model with stages: define, design, develop and disseminate. The stages of this study are limited to the development stage. The results showed that the media was feasible with media, language, and a material expert validation of 3.5, 3.8, and 3.3, respectively.

This type of research is classroom action research. The purpose of this study was to improve critical thinking skills in science by applying the Discovery Learning model. The results showed that the application of the Discovery Learning model can improve critical thinking skills in science. The percentage of critical thinking skills in the very good, good, adequate, and poor categories. In pre-cycle it was 41%, cycle I was 68%, increased in cycle II to 86%, and increased again in cycle III was 95%.

ABSTRACT A Classroom Action Research has been carried out to implement a science module based on the ethnoscience of the Bengkulu people through discovery learning to improve the critical thinking skills of students of the Program Studi Pendidikan IPA FKIP Universitas Bengkulu who take the IPA 1 course. This research activity was carried out in two cycles with two meetings. Each cycle consists of four research steps, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The learning tools consist of (1) RPP Discovery Learning model; (2) Science module based on Bengkulu Community ethnoscience measurement material; (3) LKPD; (4) assessment instruments for Critical Thinking Skills and Activities. The data analysis technique used descriptive analysis. The results obtained were an increase in students' critical thinking skills through the pretest and posttest. In the first cycle, the average pretest was 71.92 with a standard deviation of 6.01 and post-test was 75.77 with a standard deviation of 4.75. In cycle II, the average pretest was 80.19 with a standard deviation of 4.75 and the average post-test was 83.85 with a standard deviation of 4.83. From these results it can be compared that the increase in cycle II is greater than that of cycle I. The increase in students' critical thinking skills in cycle I is 58.69 and cycle II is 63.45. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the application of the Bengkulu Community Ethnoscience-Based Science Module through discovery learning can improve students' critical thinking skills. Keywords: Classroom Action Research, Module, Ethnoscience, Discovery Learning, Critical Thinking Skills.

Librarians in the 21st centuries need knowledge of innovative thinking to able to be relevant in their profession. Can they compete, survive, and thrive successfully in the midst of 21st century technological advances? All over the world, libraries are facing challenges. Already, there are reports of closures of public libraries. Many libraries are becoming underutilized while quite a number have to deal with stagnant or dwindling budgets. In order to adequately formulate workable solutions to these challenges, librarians need to consider new perspectives of offering services to their user communities. Also, libraries as living agencies are not to be stagnant but change and grow with the trends and their user communities. Innovations need to be introduced in the design and service delivery of libraries.
