Abstract Boyong River is one of many rivers originating from Mt. Merapi, flows across three autonomy administrative of Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Bantul Regency. The river experiences flood in the form of lava flow several times, and the 1994 and 2010 occurrences were considered the biggest ones along with the river history. In line with the rapid development of information and communication technology, efforts to develop the early warning system due to the Mt. Merapi disaster have been implemented by the Hydraulic Laboratory of Gadjah Mada University 2006. This paper presents the study results of Boyong River flow behavior by analyzing the data obtained from the monitoring system. The Gemawang Weir at Boyong River was selected as the river control point understudy; those include the catchment boundary, the catchment characteristics, and the hydraulic features. Monitoring equipment consists of an automatic water level recorder (AWLR), the flow visualization using a Brinno camera, and the hydrophone monitoring system. The flow hydrograph characteristics and its corresponding sediment transport rate are considered two parameters for identifying the flow behavior. The results show that the precursive and recession times of the flood hydrograph are about 1-3 hours and 3.5-5 hours, respectively.

The rapid development of connected vehicle (CV) and cooperative automated vehicle (CAV) technologies in recent years calls for the assessment of the impacts of these technologies on system performance. Microscopic simulation can play a major role in assessing these impacts, particularly during the early stages of the adoption of the technologies and associated applications. This study develops a method to evaluate the safety benefits of red-light violation warning (RLVW), a CV-based vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) application at signalized intersections, utilizing simulation. The study results confirm that it is critical to calibrate the probability to stop on amber in the utilized simulation model to reflect real-world driver behaviors when assessing RLVW impacts. Without calibration, the model is not able to assess the benefits of RLVW in reducing RLR and right-angle conflicts. Based on a surrogate safety assessment, the calibrated simulation models result shows that the CV-based RLVW can enhance the safety at signalized intersections by approximately 50.7% at 100% utilization rate of the application, considering rear-end, and right-angle conflicts.

Currently, in connection with the rapid development of high-rise construction and the improvement of joint operation of high-rise structures and bases models, the questions connected with the use of various calculation methods become topical. The rigor of analytical methods is capable of more detailed and accurate characterization of the structures behavior, which will affect the reliability of objects and can lead to a reduction in their cost. In the article, a model with two parameters is used as a computational model of the base that can effectively take into account the distributive properties of the base by varying the coefficient reflecting the shift parameter. The paper constructs the effective analytical solution of the problem of a beam of infinite length interacting with a two-parameter voided base. Using the Fourier integral equations, the original differential equation is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind with a degenerate kernel, and all the integrals are solved analytically and explicitly, which leads to an increase in the accuracy of the computations in comparison with the approximate methods. The paper consider the solution of the problem of a beam loaded with a concentrated force applied at the point of origin with a fixed value of the length of the dip section. The paper gives the analysis of the obtained results values for various parameters of coefficient taking into account cohesion of the ground.

In order to solve the shortcomings of the landslide monitoring technology method, a set of landslides monitoring and early warning system is designed. It can achieve real-time sensor data acquisition, remote transmission and query display. In addition, aiming at the harsh environment of landslide monitoring and the performance requirements of the monitoring system, an improved minimum hop routing protocol is proposed. It can reduce network energy consumption, enhance network robustness, and improve node layout and networking flexibility. In order to realize the remote transmission of data, GPRS wireless communication is used to transmit monitoring data. Combined with remote monitoring center, real-time data display, query, preservation and landslide warning and prediction are realized. The results show that the sensor data acquisition system is accurate, the system is stable, and the node network is flexible. Therefore, the monitoring system has a good use value.

The surface roughness plays an important role in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). To improve the lubrication system the flow behavior and lubrication mechanism must be understood, especially in the thin film classification. The effects of surface roughness in the EHL problem are complicated and difficult to measure by experiment. Therefore numerical simulation using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach is proposed in this research. The CFD model developed has taken the arbitrary surface roughness into consideration, and has been used to predict the characteristics of fluid flow, such as the pressure distribution, the minimal film thickness and the shear stress. The cylinder is considered to be under elastic deformation according to the theory of Hertzian contact and the surface of cylinder is defined to have an arbitrary roughness. The simulation results show that the surface roughness has significant effects on the pressure profile and shear stress, especially in the case of pure rolling, where the two parameters in the rough surface case show large fluctuations that are much higher than the corresponding smooth surface case.

The emergence of new special concretes on construction sites has shown that concretes of the same slump may behave quite differently on the job. For these concretes, one cannot rely on the traditional workability tests for quality control and rheological characterization. It has been claimed that the flow behavior of fresh concrete closely approximates the Bingham model and that at least two parameters are therefore needed to describe its rheology. Thus, rheological measurements must be carried out at not fewer than two shear rates. This study examines the applicability of the Bingham model to fluid and self-leveling highstrength concrete (HSC). Results obtained from a rheometer are compared with results of the standard slump test. Fluid concrete mixtures were investigated that had a water/binder ratio ( w/ b) of 0.33 and slump values of 200 ± 20 mm and incorporated proportions of limestone filler, silica fume, and ground silica as partial replacement (by volume) of cement. In addition, self-leveling concrete mixtures (torque viscosity ≤ 1 Nm at 15 min) having a w/ b ratio of 0.25 and 15 percent replacement of cement by various fillers were examined. The possibility of characterizing the rheology of fluid and self-leveling HSC on the basis of only two tests carried out at two different shear rates was addressed. An effort was made to define which is more relevant in a rheometer flow curve: the ascending part, the descending part, the maximum stress requirement, the flow resistance, the torque viscosity, or combinations of these factors. The possibility of measuring the rapid stiffening behavior of fresh HSC with time and the effect of ultrafine particles on the rheology using rheometric tests were also investigated.

Abstract. The town of Machu Picchu, Peru, serves the >700 000 tourists visiting Machu Picchu annually. It has grown threefold in population in the past two decades. Due to the limited low-lying ground, construction is occurring on the unstable valley slopes. Slopes range from <10° on the valley floor to >70° in the surrounding mountains. The town has grown on a delta formed at the confluence of the Alcamayo, Aguas Calientes and Vilcanota Rivers. Geohazards in and around the town of particular concern are 1) large rocks falling onto the town and/or the rail line, 2) flash flooding by any one of its three rivers, and 3) mudflows and landslides. A prototype early warning system that could monitor weather, river flow and slope stability was installed along the Aguas Calientes River in 2009. This has a distributed modular construction allowing components to be installed, maintained, salvaged, and repaired by local technicians. A diverse set of candidate power, communication and sensor technologies was evaluated. Most of the technologies had never been deployed in similar terrain, altitude or weather. The successful deployment of the prototype proved that it is technically feasible to develop early warning capacity in the town.
