Abstract Corbicula moltkiana is a mussel species in Lake Maninjau and one of the targeted fisheries resources in the lake. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of a controlled growth experiment of mollusk biota in describing their natural growth. The assessment was carried out in areas with different habitats in shore lake, namely sand and gravel-stone substrates. A consecutive 12 month- sampling was carried out from June 2013 to May 2104 using a Surber sampler at a 1-3 m depth were used to assess the wild population growth. Moreover, the growth of the controlled population was observed by rearing various sizes of mussels in artificial substrate namely three small baskets which installed in the shore area with 1-3 m depth at each station for four months. Monthly sampling was carried out to measure the shell length. The growth of C. moltkiana on wild population by VBGF methods show that at the gravel-stone substrate was higher, but the growth a controlled population in artificial substrate seemed in the sand substrate was higher than that in the gravel-stone substrate. The growth of aquatic biota in a controlled system (especially C. moltkiana) does not always reflect similar conditions to their wild growth.

Many species of marine organisms live in Indonesian waters have a potential for aquaculture (fishes, crustaceans, mollusc, echinoderm, and algae). They are cultured for food resources, the basis for cosmetic and natural medicine, and also as ornamental fish for marine aquarium. Seahorse (Syngnathidae: Hippocampus) is a marine fish which has high ecological and economic value. Fishing pressure of wild seahorse increased significantly when buyers offering an attractive price for the catch. High levels of fishing effort keep the wild stocks of seahorses well below the level that could be supported by natural growth and recruitment. Aquaculture for seahorses is very important to support sustainable production and to maintain the wild population in steady condition. Culture technique for seahorses has been developed in some countries, including Indonesia. However, seahorse aquaculture in Indonesia has not been achieved as expected due to the limited understanding of some biological characteristics. This manuscript deliberates some biological characteristics that useful as basic knowledge for seahorse aquaculture.

The effect of current velocity on byssal-thread production by adult zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) was investigated. The number of threads produced by 20 individuals at currents of 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.27 m/s was recorded daily over 21 consecutive days, after which individual shell length and dry tissue masses were measured and the byssal complex was removed. Increasing the current velocity from 0.10 to 0.20 m/s significantly elevated rates of byssal-thread production, but the rate was reduced at 0.27 m/s. Current-induced suppression of byssal-thread production may be due to mechanical disturbance of attached mussels, interfering with their ability to press the tip of the foot against the substratum as the thread cures. The mean thread number in a newly formed byssal complex after 21 days was 52.5, 63.8, 73.3 and 60.4 at currents of 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.27 m/s, respectively. Current velocity had no effect on thread width. The mean number of threads found in the byssal complex of individuals from the wild taken from the same population from which experimental subjects were drawn was 148.3/mussel. There was no correlation between thread number and shell length in the wild population. Results indicate that there are both similarities and differences in the response of byssal-thread production to variable current velocity in freshwater dreissenids and marine mytilids.

Jet fuels such as JP-4 can be introduced into the environment and come in contact with aquatic biota in several ways. Studies in this laboratory have demonstrated JP-4 toxicity to fish. Benzene is the major constituent of the water soluble fraction of JP-4. The normal surface morphology of bluegill olfactory lamellae was examined in conjunction with electrophysiology experiments. There was no information regarding the ultrastructural and physiological responses of the olfactory epithelium of bluegills to acute benzene exposure.The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of benzene on the surface morphology of the nasal rosettes of the bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). Bluegills were exposed to a sublethal concentration of 7.7±0.2ppm (+S.E.M.) benzene for five, ten or fourteen days. Nasal rosettes were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde and 2.0% paraformaldehyde in 0.1M cacodylate buffer (pH 7.4) containing 1.25mM calcium chloride. Specimens were processed for scanning electron microscopy.

We recently described an artificial substrate system which could be used to optimize labeling parameters in EM immunocytochemistry (ICC). The system utilizes blocks of glutaraldehyde polymerized bovine serum albumin (BSA) into which an antigen is incorporated by a soaking procedure. The resulting antigen impregnated blocks can then be fixed and embedded as if they are pieces of tissue and the effects of fixation, embedding and other parameters on the ability of incorporated antigen to be immunocyto-chemically labeled can then be assessed. In developing this system further, we discovered that the BSA substrate can also be dried and then sectioned for immunolabeling with or without prior chemical fixation and without exposing the antigen to embedding reagents. The effects of fixation and embedding protocols can thus be evaluated separately.

Tantangan pengembangan ekonomi biru di Lombok adalah menurunnya habitat terutama rumput laut, terumbu karang dan bakau, karena tingginya tekanan ekonomi yang menyebabkan orang terlibat dalam eksploitasi sumber daya  perikanan. Tujuan riset adalah mereview penerapan konsep “Ekonomi Biru” pada usaha perikanan budidaya  di Kabupaten Lombok Timur. Data dan informasi dikumpulkan melalui penelusuran dokumen, laporan riset dan publikasi ilmiah terkait topik kajian. Dokumen-dokumen tersebut dianalisis secara konten (content analysis) dan direview dari aspek sosial dan ekonomi yang dijelaskan secara kualitatif. Hasil review menunjukkan bahwa 6 (enam) usaha perikanan dapat memberikan efek berganda yaitu budidaya  lobster, budi daya  rumput laut, pengolahan kepiting, pengolahan limbah kepala ikan, dan tambak garam mempunyai peluang menciptakan efek berganda, artinya keenam usaha tersebut dapat menciptakan alternatif mata pencaharian yang bisa berdampak pada peningkatan ekonomi rumah tangga. Title: Prospects of the Implementation of Blue Economy Concept on An opportunity Fisheries Bussiness in East Lombok DistrictThe challenge of developing a blue economy in Lombok is the decline of habitats, especially seaweed, coral reefs and mangroves, due to the high economic pressure that causes people to be involved in exploitation of fisheries resources. The aim of the research is to review the application of the concept of “Blue Economy” in aquaculture businesses in East Lombok District. Data and information were collected through documents investigation, research reports and scientific publications related to the topic of the study. These documents were analyzed using content analysis and reviewed from the social and economic aspects qualitatively described. The result shows that the review indicates that 6 (six) fisheries businesses can provide multiple effects namely lobster aquaculture, seaweed farming, crab processing, fish head waste treatment, and salt farming have the opportunity to create multiple effects, meaning that the six businesses can create alternative livelihoods that can has an impact on improving the household economy.
