Magical Practice

The word “magic” refers to a broad range of beliefs and practices that include animism, charm(s), divination, enchantment, fantasy, fetish, glamour, illusion, miracles, the occult, shamanism, sorcery, spells, the supernatural, superstition, taboos, trickery, and witchcraft. Magic―once thought a core feature of “primitive societies,” abandoned by more rational, bureaucratic and progressive beliefs―is, in fact, thriving in contemporary life, and central to practices of capitalism as well as to everyday behaviors. Magic is practiced in fields of finance, government, law, medicine and health, technology, advertising, marketing, sports, the gaming industry, and theatrical performances, among other institutions. When situations allow for the assemblage of a “magician,” “rite,” and “representation” within these complex social networks and when professional skills, ideas, conditions, contexts, media, and meanings align, magic acts as an agent of change. Magic is also practiced in everyday situations in which people need to feel a sense of control in circumstances where it’s lacking, such as performing well under competitive conditions or during times of crisis with indefinite outcomes. Consequently, they rely on magical thinking—in the forms of superstitions, wishful thinking, and taboo avoidance—which is often accompanied by charms, amulets, or acts of faith to guide them through uncertainty. Conjuring terms such as “fate” and “luck” to ward off illness or improve one’s chances at getting a hit in baseball, are, in fact, ways of expressing ambiguities and dealing with conflicts of temporal existence that all humans face in one form or another. Magic structured in institutions and practiced in everyday situations is a prime example of contradiction in contemporary life. Objective knowledge of facts is increasingly understood as contingent rather than permanent, leaving room for uncertainty, mystery, the unknown, and seemingly nonrational alternatives. Scientific evidence becomes as valid as alternative facts. Documenting recent developments, it is suggested that rationality and magic are not mutually exclusive. Rather, rational behaviors and practices are suffused with magic. Magical beliefs and specific rituals complement practical knowledge so as to enhance knowledge as a way to secure success. All of these ways of thinking and social practices have something at stake, in that risk, uncertainty, and ambiguity of outcome are prevalent, and hence call on magical practices to bring about change.

This essay examines the second installment of Martinican author Patrick Chamoiseau’s trilogy Une enfance créole, using Chemin-d’école to consider how writers from the Caribbean may deploy magic in their texts in alternative ways to the magical realist mode, which critics have argued often reinforces a false dichotomy between a rational “West” and its irrational “others.” Specifically, Chamoiseau’s memoir both portrays creole magical beliefs as a vehicle through which its school-aged protagonists resist the ideology of neocolonial pedagogies, and it consistently refers to aspects of French civilization through the lens of the magical or marvelous. Ultimately, this essay argues, Chemin-d’école looks beyond magical motifs as mere emblems of tradition or authenticity. Using them instead to portray the neocolonial “civilizing mission” as its own form of magical thinking, the narration destabilizes the very ideas of the essential difference of Caribbean cultures and of the purported rationality of the West.

Hospital governance refers to the complex of checks and balances that determine how decisions are made within the top structures of hospitals. In this chapter, authors introduce hospital governance as a policy domain in which data mining methods have a large potential to provide insight and practical knowledge. The chapter starts by exploring the essentials of the concept, by analysing the root notion of governance and comparing it with applications in other sectors. Recent developments and examples from the UK, France and The Netherlands are outlined. Based on an evaluation of the current state of affairs, a research agenda is developed. The chapter concludes with an introduction to the European Hospital Governance Project, which follows the outlines of the described research agenda. Methods of data mining and information visualisation that are used in this project are explained by means of a real data example.

Amid the vast spread of the coronavirus pandemic, educational institutions have shifted to online learning across the world. In this connection, people of different cultures are experiencing a rigid period in which mainly school administrators, instructors, and students have to teach and learn at a distance due to corona restrictions. In this context, institutions that have already adopted the principles of ODL and have integrated these principles into their online courses utilized the promises that extend further educational opportunities and potentials from the beginning of the corona process. Therefore, the primary aim of this chapter is to shed light to the promises and pitfalls of ODL in terms of the steps to be taken and the necessary features of an appropriate course design. In addition, this chapter is intended to contribute to the related literature with the updated sources of recent developments during corona lockdown and guide professionals, researchers, and instructors who would benefit from theoretical and practical knowledge for effective distance course design.

Abstract Promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education implies an improvement and quality in the exercise of responsible citizenship, being the key in the training of future teachers as the main agent of change and transition towards sustainability in society. The aim of this study is to collect and analyze scientific evidence on the attitudes, competences and training of future teachers towards ESD. Therefore, a qualitative methodology has been carried out based on a systematic review of the most important scientific databases (WoS and Scopus). One of the most interesting results shows that there are favorable attitudes of our education students towards sustainability and their commitment to the environment. However, we can conclude that, in the training of our teachers, there is a deficit in the development of professional skills needed to implement ESD (teaching practice) to contribute to social welfare.

The shale gas revolution has rekindled interest in olefins production due to the abundance of ethane as a raw material resource. However, the main technology still revolves around the cost-intensive distillation operation. Hence this work aims to investigate the economic optimisation of olefins synthesis from petroleum in the light of recent developments. A model-based approach is applied to determine the optimal sequencing of separation and reaction processes for a multi-component hydrocarbon mixture feed to produce mainly ethylene and propylene. a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is formulated based on a superstructure that captures numerous plausible synthesis alternatives. The model comprises linear mass balance reactor representation and simple sharp distillation based on split fractions for product recovery. Integer binary variablesis used for selecting the task for equipment and continuous variables for representing the flowrate of each task. To expedite converging to an optimal solution of a least total annualised cost configuration, the formulation is appended with logical constraints on the design and structural specifications derived from heuristics based on practical knowledge and experience. The modelling approach on actual case studies based on two such petrochemical facilities operating in Malaysia is implemented. Additionally, the solution analysis is enriched with the investigation on a second- and third-best (suboptimal) configurations obtained through appropriate integer cuts as constraints to the model. The results show good agreement with existing plant configurations, thus substantiating the value and verification of the proposed model-based optimisation approach.

Past research indicates that existential threats related to meaning in life increase religious-related magical beliefs (e.g., belief in God). The present three studies examined more broadly whether threatened meaning influences magical ideation and beliefs among atheists and theists. Amazon Mechanical Turk ( N = 1,454) and student participants ( N = 50) were randomly assigned to a meaning threat or control condition and then completed measures of magical ideation and beliefs. Across three studies ( N = 1,504), we did not find experimental evidence that threatened meaning increases magical ideation and beliefs. However, in Study 3, we also examined the link between the meaning motive and magical ideation and beliefs using an individual difference approach and found that the need for meaning was a significant predictor of magical ideation and beliefs, particularly among atheists.

High-grade osteosarcoma (HGOS) is a very aggressive bone tumor which primarily affects adolescents and young adults. Although not advanced as is the case for other cancers, pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomic studies applied to HGOS have been providing hope for an improved understanding of the biology and the identification of genetic biomarkers, which may impact on clinical care management. Recent developments of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics in HGOS are expected to: i) highlight genetic events that trigger oncogenesis or which may act as drivers of disease; ii) validate research models that best predict clinical behavior; and iii) indicate genetic biomarkers associated with clinical outcome (in terms of treatment response, survival probability and susceptibility to chemotherapy-related toxicities). The generated body of information may be translated to clinical settings, in order to improve both effectiveness and safety of conventional chemotherapy trials as well as to indicate new tailored treatment strategies. Here, we review and summarize the current scientific evidence for each of the aforementioned issues in view of possible clinical applications.

Nowadays, managers in the computer and video gaming industry are forced to reevaluate their companies’ strategic position within the value-added chain, as traditional business models show a tendency to erode. While there are some striking parallels to the music industry, like facing the threat of acts of piracy, indicating what future developments might be expected, there are also best practice examples from the computer and video gaming industry to learn from. Thus, it is imperative to have a look at the changes in competitive settings within this industry and analyze adequate examples regarding how to setup new profitable business models. In order to evaluate the changed business models in a meaningful way a systematic approach is advisable. Therefore, a short ontology of business models is given first, supporting the illustration of recent developments in the industry and which will guide the presentation of selective cases. Three major implications for managers in the computer and video gaming industry will be identified. These include a need to centralize the game experience, a stronger shift towards online distribution channels and the development of a collective sense of identity by target communities.

Modern industry and commerce are dependent on accurate measurement, and there is a need throughout all industry for improvement in measurement skills. The science and technology of measurement is a multi-disciplinary subject, while measurement and control are interdependent. Sufficient and proper teaching and training in the subject, particularly in further and higher education, is unlikely to occur unless the subject becomes established as a systemised discipline in its own right. A set of unifying, underlying, general principles and concepts organised in a logical framework is required, although it is desirable to avoid both the temptation to overtheorise and to produce mere catalogues of devices. Of considerable importance is a suitable means of presenting theoretical and practical knowledge about primary sensing elements and measuring transducers. The paper will consider recent developments that are helping to establish the discipline of measurements.
