Abstract A method for the determination of serum arginase is given which combines the enzymatic formation of urea with the sensitive method of Coulombe (1) for measuring this substance. This procedure allows more accurate determinations in the normal range than do previous methods described and is convenient for clinical routine. Significant difference is found between the mean values of normal men and women, 3.9 units/L. for the former and 2.9 units/L. for the latter.

Simple, fast and reliable spectrophotometric methods were developed for determination of Levocetirizine in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage forms. The solutions of standard and the sample were prepared in methanol. The quantitative determination of the drug was carried out using the zero order derivative values measured at 230 nm and the area under the curve method values measured at 227-234 nm (n=2). Calibration graphs constructed at their wavelengths of determination were linear in the concentration range of Levocetirizine using 5-25?g/ml (r=0.998 and r=0.999) for zero order and area under the curve spectrophotometric method. All the proposed methods have been extensively validated as per ICH guidelines. There was no significant difference between the performance of the proposed methods regarding the mean values and standard deviations. Developed spectrophotometric methods in this study are simple, accurate, precise and sensitive to assay of Levocetirizine in tablets.

A longitudinal study of urinary 17-OHCS in 16 depressive patients showed mean values within the accepted normal range. There were no significant differences between pre-treatment and post-treatment values; only the female patients showed a tendency to have somewhat lower post-treatment levels. 17-KS output was measured in 18 depressive patients. The mean values were within the normal range. There was no significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment values although the female patients displayed a tendency towards somewhat lower levels following treatment. DHA and EA excretion were measured in 9 depressive patients. There was a very wide variance in the findings. There was no significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment levels. The significance of the above findings is discussed. It is considered that measurements of urinary excretion of corticosteroids in affective disorders constitute a limited source of information.

This population-genetic study compares morphophysiological and genetic variability in a group of homosexually oriented individuals from Serbia (N=96) with control group of heterosexual individuals (N=96) using a test of determination of homozygously recessive characteristics in humans (HRC-test). Results of our study revealed a statistically significant difference in the mean values of genetic homozygosity (control group 5.0+0.2 ; homosexuals 3.4 +0.1 HRCs, out of 20 observed characteristics) the differences in the distribution type, as well as in the variances of presence of specific combinations of such traits. These results suggest a complex polygenic difference between two observed systems. There is no difference in the degree of genetic homozygosity between the genders in each tested group of individuals. However, both homosexually oriented females and males have significantly lower mean values of HRCs compared to female and male heterosexuals.

Febrile seizures (FS) are the most common neurological disorder in childhood and are a great stress for parents due to their dramatic clinical appearance. Using test for determination of homozygously recessive characteristics in humans (HRC test) we analyzed presence, distribution, and individual combination of 20 selected genetically controlled morphophysiological traits among FS patients (N=121) and control (N=121) to determine a possible deviation in the homozygosity level and genetic loads in the group of affected children and whether there is a predisposition to the occurrence of FS. The results of our study show a statistically significant difference in the mean values of the HRC tested (x¯HRC/20 CN = 3.2 ± 0.2; x¯HRC/20 FS = 4.6 ± 0.2, t= 5.74 , p< 0.0001), as well as in the distribution and variability of two studied samples (VC=55,3%, VFS= 39,6%), which indicates a complex polygenic difference among the tested groups of subjects. The differences in the degree of genetic homozygosity and variability are also present between the genders (t Cf/FSf = 4.12; t Cm/FSm = 3.98; p <0.0001) (VCf=56.9%, VFSf= 39.3%; VCm=54.1%, VFSm=40.1%). Obtained results indicate the enlargement of recessively homozygous genetic loads in the group of children with FS which may represent some kind of predisposition for expressivity of this type of seizures.

A study of radiographs from 50 males and 50 females was undertaken to determine whether a relationship existed between the proximal articular set angle and the hallux abductus angle. Gender differences in the relationship were also investigated. The normal range for the proximal articular set angle was –2.6° to 8.6°, with a mean of 5°. There was no significant difference in the mean values between males and females. A positive linear correlation between the proximal articular set angle and hallux abducto valgus deformity was found (R2 = 0.52), suggesting that an increased lateral tilt of the metatarsal head is one of the factors that lead to hallux abducto valgus deformity. The relationship between proximal articular set angle and hallux abducto valgus deformity was similar in males and females and did not account for the increased hallux deformity seen in females. Abstract A colorimetric method for determining the ammonia content in crabmeat in various stages of decomposition was studied collaboratively. The method involves the color reaction between ammonia, thymol, and alkaline bromine water. The mean values for organoleptic Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 of decomposition were found to be 281, 568, and 1376 μg NH3/g crabmeat, respectively. By statistical analysis these means were found to be significantly different from each other, and were found to arise from different populations. Useful cut-off points can be selected to separate the classes. The method has been adopted as official first action.

Abstract The therapeutic management of the patient with transformed low-grade lymphoma is quite different from those with pure indolent disease. In cases of transformation FDG uptake characteristics may help identify an area of transformation in indolent disease and thereby impact management. Our objective was to evaluate the potential of FDG-PET imaging in the determination of transformation Methods: A total of 60 patients with low-grade lymphoma (48 patients) and those with known transformation to DLCL (12 patients) underwent FDG-PET imaging prior to therapy. In the indolent group, 27 patients were diagnosed with a follicular histology and 11 with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) and 10 were with marginal zone lymphoma. A total of 370 lesions were evaluated and SUV’s were obtained for all visualized lesions. Mean values were calculated on a patient and total site basis. Additionally, mean SUV values were calculated for lesions with the highest SUV’s, in groups with indolent and transformation histology. Results: Results are summarized in the Table. There was a significant difference in the mean SUV’s between the group with transformation and that with indolent lymphoma (7.6 ± 4.6 vs. 4.5 ±2.5). More importantly, the mean values for SUV in the lesions with the highest FDG uptake were significantly different between the two groups (13.8 ±5.3 vs 5.8±2.9). Among the patients who had a biopsy taken from the lesions with the highest SUV’s the range was 8 to 27 and the mean value was 14.9±8.0. Conclusions: In patients with indolent lymphoma, areas of significant increase in FDG (particularly SUV’s >12) should be considered targets for biopsy. Differences in SUV’s Between Transformed and Indolent Lesions Patient Number Mean SUV Mean SUV in Hottest Lesions SUV Range in Hottest Lesions SUV: standardized uptake values Patients with Transformation 12 7.6+/−4.6 13.8+/−5.3 8–27 Patients with Indolent Lymphoma 48 4.5+/−2.5 5.8+/−2.9 2–12
