Abstract This study determined feed intake behavior, performance, feed efficiency, and maintenance requirements of bulls with high and low residual feed intake and body weight gain. Data were collected from 42 weaned Nellore bulls (initial BW 260 ± 8.1 kg; age 7 ± 1.0 mo) housed in a feedlot in a group pen that contained electronic feeders. Individual dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded daily and body weight (BW) was measured every 28 d over a 140-day period. Indexes of average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency, and residual feed intake (RFI) were calculated. Residual feed intake and gain (RFIG) was calculated according to previously published equations. Frequency of meals, duration per visit, and time spent feeding per day were recorded as feeding behavior measures. Maintenance requirements were calculated according to the BR-CORTE system. High RFIG bulls had lower DMI (P < 0.01), lower final BW (P < 0.01), and were more feed efficient (P < 0.01) than low RFIG bulls, but both groups had similar ADG (P = 0.55). No differences in feeding behavior were observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). The net energy requirements for maintenance, metabolizable energy for maintenance, and efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization were 76.5, 122.68 kcal/EBW0.75 daily, and 62.4%, respectively for high RFIG bulls, and 89.2, 143.76 kcal/EBW0.75 daily, and 62.0% for low RFIG bulls. This study reveals that low RFIG bulls are less feed efficient and have greater maintenance requirements than high RFIG bulls (0.16 ± 0.006 and 0.18 ± 0.006, respectively). As low RFIG eat more, and in beef cattle, feeding behavior is associated with methane emissions, we suggest further research evaluating this relationship be conducted. In addition, selection for high RFIG cattle would improve feed efficiency, reduce production costs, and could potentially reduce methane emissions.

The experiment was conducted at the livestock production and management unit, faculty of agriculture. MGCGV Chitrakoot – Satna ( M.P.). To complete the research work following steps were followed. Day old 75 broiler chicks (DOC) of same hatch were produced and reared in of Deep litter system. The chicks were weighed, leg banded and distributed randomly into five groups of 15 chicks each as treatment. Chicks of each treatment were further divided into three sub groups of five chicks in each in Randomized Block Design (RBD). Chicks of each sub group were accommodated comfortably in deep letter system providing 1 sq. ft./ chick. Chicks were fed standard starter ration upto 3 weeks age (1 to 21 days) and then broiler finisher ration upto 3-4 weeks (22-28 days). An experiment was conducted with DOC to 75 broilers chicks divided into five groups T0, T1,T2 and T4 which were supplemented with turmeric and Tulsi leaves powder @ 1.0g, 2.0g, 3.0g and 4.0g/kg of broiler ration, respectively. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight, weekly gain in weight, weekly feed consumption and feed conversion of broiler for four weeks. Based on the results of the experiment, it may be concluded that feed supplementation with turmeric (Curcuma longa) powder influenced the body weight, gain in body weight, feed intake and feed efficiency of broiler chicks. Based on the result of the experiment, it may be concluded that feed supplementation with turmeric + Tulsi leaves powder influenced body weight, gain in body weight, feed intake and feed efficiency of broiler chicks. Based on feed intake and feed efficiency, the best performance of broilers was obtained with feed supplementation of 3g turmeric + 3g Tulsi powder per kg of standard ration (T3), followed by 4g turmeric + 4g Tulsi leaf powder (T4). Treatment T3 was economically superior over all other treatments and control.

A quarter of all anthropogenic methane emissions in the United States are from enteric fermentation, primarily from ruminant livestock. This study was undertaken to test the effect of a methane inhibitor, 3-nitrooxypropanol (3NOP), on enteric methane emission in lactating Holstein cows. An experiment was conducted using 48 cows in a randomized block design with a 2-wk covariate period and a 12-wk data collection period. Feed intake, milk production, and fiber digestibility were not affected by the inhibitor. Milk protein and lactose yields were increased by 3NOP. Rumen methane emission was linearly decreased by 3NOP, averaging about 30% lower than the control. Methane emission per unit of feed dry matter intake or per unit of energy-corrected milk were also about 30% less for the 3NOP-treated cows. On average, the body weight gain of 3NOP-treated cows was 80% greater than control cows during the 12-wk experiment. The experiment demonstrated that the methane inhibitor 3NOP, applied at 40 to 80 mg/kg feed dry matter, decreased methane emissions from high-producing dairy cows by 30% and increased body weight gain without negatively affecting feed intake or milk production and composition. The inhibitory effect persisted over 12 wk of treatment, thus offering an effective methane mitigation practice for the livestock industries.

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan limbah asal feses sapi sebagai bahan pembuatan pakan pelet guna memacu pertumbuhan ikan Lele Dumbo.  Penelitian ini dilakukan di Station Riset II (dua) Ie Suum, UPT. University Farm, Aceh Besar,  tanggal 22 Mei‒14 Agustus 2016. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) terdiri dari 4 perlakuan dan 4 ulangan. Setiap ulangan merupakan unit percobaan, masing-masing terdiri dari 50 ekor ikan Lele Dumbo. Perlakuan menggunakan pakan komersil ikan 781 Hiprovite yang disubtitusikan dengan pakan pelet organik. Parameter yang diamati adalah berat badan, pertambahan berat badan, konsumsi pakan, konversi pakan, efisiensi pakan, kelangsungan hidup, dan kualitas air (pH, suhu, kelembaban, cahaya). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perlakuan pakan limbah asal feses sapi berpengaruh sangat nyata (P0.01), terhadap berat badan, pertambahan berat badan, dan konsumsi ransum ikan Lele Dumbo, namun tidak berpengaruh nyata (P0,05)  terhadap konversi dan efisiensi pakan. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pakan pelet organik asal feses sapi dapat memacu pertumbuhan ikan Lele Dumbo. Utilization of Cattle Feces as Materials for Pellet Feed to The Weight Gain of Catfish Abstract. The aim of present study was to utilizase cattle feces as materials for making organic pellet feed to improve the growth of catfish.  The study was conducted  in Station Research II (two) Ie Seum Unit, University Farm, Aceh Besar, May 22-August 14, 2016. The study was designed into completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 4 replications. Each relication was an experimental unit consisting of 50 catfishes.The treatment was substition of commercial feed fish (781 Hiprovite) with  organic pellet feed with the level of 0, 10, 20, and 30%, respectively.  Parameters  measured were body weight, feed intake, feed conversion, feed efficiency,  livebility, and water quality  (pH, temperature, moisture, light). The results of study showed that administration of organic pellet feed  affected highly significant (P0.01) on body weight, body weight gain and feed intake of catfish. However, there were no significant effect (P0.05) on feed conversion and feed efficiency.  It was concluded that the organic pellet feed composed mainly from cattle feces could  improve the growth of catfish

One hundred and twenty Anak broiler chicks of both sexes were fed furazolidone (additive) in feed to study their growth/weight gain response. The birds were grouped into four, A, B, C, and D of 30 chicks each Treatments B, C and D were administered with furazolidone in feed at the following dosage rates: 0.008%, 0.004% 0.002% respectively. Group A served as control in which furazolidone was not added in the feed. All the groups, (except in feed intake where the control differed significantly) had no significant differences in body weight gain, feed efficiency, and feed intake. It was concluded that it is not necessary to use furazolidone as a growth promoter in broiler feeds.

Abstract Data of comparative slaughter were used to determine Nellore bulls' net energy requirements classified as efficient or inefficient according to residual feed intake (RFI) and selection lines (SL). Sixty-seven Nellore bulls from the selected (SE) and control (CO) lines of the selection program for postweaning weight gain were used. The animals underwent digestibility trials before being submitted to the finishing trial. Sixteen bulls were slaughtered at the beginning of the finishing trial, and their body composition were used as the baseline for the remaining animals. For body composition determinations, whole empty body components were weighed, ground, and subsampled for chemical analyses. Initial body composition was determined with equations developed from the baseline group using shrunk body weight, fat, and protein. The low RFI (LRFI) and CO animals had a lower dry matter (DMI) and nutrient intake (P < 0.05) than high RFI (HRFI) and SE animals, without alterations in digestibility coefficients (P > 0.05). During the finishing trial, DMI remained lower for LRFI and CO animals. Growth performance was similar between RFI classes, except for empty body weight gain that tended to be higher for LRFI than HRFI (P = 0.091). The SE animals had less fat content on the empty body (P = 0.005) than CO. Carcasses tended to be leaner for LRFI than HRFI (P = 0.080) and for SE than CO (P = 0.066) animals. LRFI animals retained more energy (P = 0.049) and had lower heat production (HP; P = 0.033) than the HRFI ones. Retained energy was not influenced by SL (P = 0.165), but HP tended to be higher for SE when compared to CO (P = 0.075) animals. Net energy requirement for maintenance (NEm) was lower for LRFI than HRFI (P = 0.009), and higher for SE than CO (P = 0.046) animals. There was an interaction tendency between RFI and SL (P = 0.063), suggesting that NEm was lower for LRFI+CO than HRFI+CO (P = 0.006), with no differences for SE (P = 0.527) animals. The efficiency of ME utilization for maintenance (km) of LRFI and HRFI animals were 62.6 and 58.4%, respectively, and for SE and CO were 59.0 and 62.1%, respectively. The breeding program for postweaning weight has not improved feed efficiency over the years, with RFI classification not being a promising selection tool for SE animals. Classification based on RFI seems to be useful in animals that have not undergone the breeding program, with LRFI animals having lower energy requirements than the HRFI ones.

Abstract Lipid metabolism is considered one of the important factors affecting residual feed intake (RFI). However, the relationship between RFI and expression of lipid metabolism-related genes is unknown in meat-type ducks. To address this issue, a total of 1,000 male meat-type ducks with similar body weight were randomly selected to measure body weight gain and feed intake from 21 to 42 d of age to estimate RFI. The 8 greatest- (high RFI [HRFI]) and lowest- (low RFI [LRFI]) ranking birds were then selected for the present study. Relative expressions of key genes, namely sirtuin 1 (Sirt1), forkhead box O1 (Foxo1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor 1c (SREBP-1c), fas cell surface death receptor (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha (ACC), carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), and acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1), were then determined in the HRFI and LRFI ducks by quantitative PCR. The results showed that RFI, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in LRFI ducks than in HRFI ducks. In addition, expression of Sirt1, Foxo1, CPT1A, and ACOX1 were significantly higher in LRFI ducks than in HRFI ducks (P < 0.05), whereas PPARγ and FAS expression levels were significantly lower in LRFI ducks than in HRFI ducks (P < 0.01). Correlation analysis showed that Sirt1, CPT1A, and ACOX1 expressions were significantly negatively correlated with FCR (r = −0.81 to −0.93; P < 0.01), whereas PPARγ and FAS expressions were significantly positively correlated with FCR (r = 0.74 to 0.87; P < 0.01). PPARγ expression was significantly positively correlated with RFI (r = 0.83; P < 0.01), whereas CPT1A and ACOX1 expressions were significantly negatively correlated with RFI (r = −0.84 to −0.89; P < 0.01). Sirt1 mRNA expression was positively correlated with Foxo1, CPT1A, and ACOX1 mRNA expression (r = 0.78 to 0.92; P < 0.01). Association of Foxo1 with CPT1A and ACOX1 was positive (r = 0.88 to 0.96; P < 0.01). These results suggest that genes related to fatty acid oxidation are upregulated in the liver of ducks with high feed efficiency, while genes associated with lipid synthesis are downregulated. Furthermore, the inclusion of lipid metabolism-related genes in future breeding programs might be beneficial for selecting ducks with greater feed efficiency phenotype.

A six weeks trial was carried out to study the effect of feeding cottonseed meal (CSM) with 432, day - old Cobb 400 broiler chicks distributed to nine experimental diets with six replicates, each containing eight chicks. The experimental diets were formulated based on total amino acids (TAA) or based on digestible amino acids (DAA) with or without iron supplementation with two levels of CSM (2 and 4%) and control diet based on maize – soyabean. Birds fed with CSM at 4% DAA without iron supplementation had higher body weight gain than the control (1918 vs 1804g). Feed intake and feed efficiency were comparable in birds fed with different experimental diets. Inclusion of CSM up to 4% TAA or DAA with or without iron supplementation had comparable dressing percentage, gizzard, giblet (% of live body weight) and spleen (g). The liver weight (% of live weight) was lower in birds fed 4% CSM - TAA and 2 or 4% CSM - DAA with or without iron supplementation (1.45 – 1.53 vs 1.65%). Heart weight was higher (0.91 vs 0.80% of live weight) and abdominal fat (15.42 vs 24.0g) was lowered in 4% CSM - DAA with iron supplementation. The cost of feed/kg live weight gain in the diet of 4% CSM - DAA was lowest (52.77), followed by 4% CSM - TAA (55.43) and the difference with control was Rs 5.43 and Rs 2.77 respectively. The overall performance based on body weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency was better in the diet formulated with 4% level of CSM - DAA.

Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate prediction methods, validation approaches and pseudo-phenotypes for the prediction of the genomic breeding values of feed efficiency related traits in Nellore cattle. It used the phenotypic and genotypic information of 4,329 and 3,594 animals, respectively, which were tested for residual feed intake (RFI), dry matter intake (DMI), feed efficiency (FE), feed conversion ratio (FCR), residual body weight gain (RG), and residual intake and body weight gain (RIG). Six prediction methods were used: ssGBLUP, BayesA, BayesB, BayesCπ, BLASSO, and BayesR. Three validation approaches were used: 1) random: where the data was randomly divided into ten subsets and the validation was done in each subset at a time; 2) age: the division into the training (2010 to 2016) and validation population (2017) were based on the year of birth; 3) genetic breeding value (EBV) accuracy: the data was split in the training population being animals with accuracy above 0.45; and validation population those below 0.45. We checked the accuracy and bias of genomic value (GEBV). The results showed that the GEBV accuracy was the highest when the prediction is obtained with ssGBLUP (0.05 to 0.31) (Figure 1). The low heritability obtained, mainly for FE (0.07 ± 0.03) and FCR (0.09 ± 0.03), limited the GEBVs accuracy, which ranged from low to moderate. The regression coefficient estimates were close to 1, and similar between the prediction methods, validation approaches, and pseudo-phenotypes. The cross-validation presented the most accurate predictions ranging from 0.07 to 0.037. The prediction accuracy was higher for phenotype adjusted for fixed effects than for EBV and EBV deregressed (30.0 and 34.3%, respectively). Genomic prediction can provide a reliable estimate of genomic breeding values for RFI, DMI, RG and RGI, as to even say that those traits may have higher genetic gain than FE and FCR.

An experiment was carried out to determine the growth performance and haematological indices of Red Sokoto goats placed on oil palm leaf meal (OPLM)-wheat offal based diet. Six goats aged 12-18 months, weighing 15 – 20kg were randomly assigned to three treatments, comprising two animals each in a Completely Randomized Design. Each animal received 1kg of the diet daily for 56 days and weighed weekly. Results showed that final body weight was significant (P<0.05) with goats on T3 having the highest (21.50kg). The feed intake, body weight gain and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) were significantly different (P<0.05). T3 had the highest feed intake (305.35g/d), highest body weight gain (90.84g/d) and the best FCR (3.36). Significant differences (P <0.05) were observed in the Red Blood Cell (RBC), Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and Haemoglobin (Hb) counts, ranging between 3.12 - 4.20x106ml; 23.00 -30.50% and 7.70 - 10.15g/dl respectively with goats on T3 having the highest.  The inclusion of OPLM enhanced body weight gain, FCR, RBC, PCV, and Hb counts of the goats. Therefore the oil palm leaf meal diets are recommended for better goat production. Key word: Growth performance; Oil Palm Leaf meal., Blood profile., Creatinine., Red Sokoto Goat.
