Microphase-Assisted Reaction Engineering

A relatively recent concept in organic reaction engineering is the use of submicron particles to enhance the rate of a reaction. These are usually microparticles of solids, but can also be microdroplets of liquids, or even microbubbles of gases. They can be external agents, participating reactants, or precipitating solids. In this chapter, we cover the role of small particles as a whole, which may be regarded as constituting an additional colloid-like phase normally referred to as the microphase. We begin by classifying the microphase in terms of its mode of action and then proceed to an analysis of the following categories of importance in organic technology: microslurry of (1) catalyst or adsorbing particles in a reactive mixture; (2) solid reactant particles in a continuous phase of the second reactant; and (3) solid particles precipitating from reaction between two dissolved reactants, one of which can be a solid dissolving and reacting simultaneously with the other reactant. The microphase in the first case is externally added, whereas that in the last two cases is a reactant or a product. The field is still developing (with many unproven theories), and hence we restrict the treatment to a simple analysis of selected situations based on reasonable assumptions (thus avoiding often unjustified complexity). A microphase can be described as an assemblage of very small dispersed phase particles with average size (dp) much less than the diffusional length scale of the solute. Usually dp < l0μm, compared to the diffusional length scale which is of the order of 50-60 μm. Although the microphase is a distinct phase, the phase in which it is present is commonly regarded as pseudohomogeneous. In a stricter sense, however, it should be regarded as a microheterogeneous phase. Indeed, several studies have been reported on modeling heterogeneous microphase systems (Holstvoogd et al., 1986, 1988; Yagi and Hikita, 1987). In view of the ability of the particles of such a system, pseudohomogeneous or pseudoheterogeneous, to get inside the fluid film, they can enhance the transport rate of the solute through the film. Experimental observations in typical gas-liquid and slurry systems have clearly demonstrated (see Ramachandran and Sharma, 1969; Uchida et al., 1975; Sada et al., 1977a,b, 1980; Alper et al., 1980; Pal et al., 1982; Bruining et al., 1986; Bhaskarwar et al., 1986; Bhagwat et al., 1987; Mehra et al., 1988; Mehra and Sharma, 1988a; Hagenson et al., 1994) the enhancing role of a microphase made up of fine particles. The case of a second liquid phase acting as a microphase or of a solid product performing a similar function has also been studied and found to enhance the reaction rate (Janakiraman and Sharma, 1985; Mehra and Sharma, 1985, 1988b; Anderson et al., 1998). Mehra et al. (1988) and Mehra (1990a,b, 1996) presented a detailed account of the role of different types of microphases in rate enhancement. In all these cases, either a microphase is separately introduced or one of the reactants or products acts as a microphase.

Coating color stability, as defined by changes in its solid particle fraction, is important for runnability, quality, and costs of a paper coating operation. This study sought to determine whether the size or density of particles is important in size segregation in a pigment coating process. We used a laboratory coater to study changes in coating color composition during coating operations. The results suggest that size segregation occurs for high and low density particles. Regardless of the particle density, the fine particle size fraction (<0.2 μm) was the most prone for depletion, causing an increase in the average size of the particles. Strong interactions between the fine particles and other components also were associated with a low depletion tendency of fine particles. A stable process and improved efficiency of fine particles and binders can be achieved by controlling the depletion of fine particles.

This paper presents a study on pulsed plasma-chemical synthesis of fluorine- and gold-doped silicon oxide nanopowder. The gold- and fluorine-containing precursors were gold chloride (AuCl3) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). Pulsed plasma-chemical synthesis is realized on the laboratory stand, including a plasma-chemical reactor and TEA-500 electron accelerator. The parameters of the electron beam are as follows: 400–450 keV electron energy, 60 ns half-amplitude pulse duration, up to 200 J pulse energy, and 5 cm beam diameter. We confirmed the composite structure of SixOy@Au by using transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. We determined the chemical composition and morphology of synthesized SixOy@Au and SixOy@F nanocomposites. The material contained a SixOy@Au carrier with an average size of 50–150 nm and a shell of fine particles with an average size of 5–10 nm.

COVID-19 spread rapidly across the world, and by March 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was identified in South Africa. Lockdown-related measures such as restricted movement and isolation were implemented to contain the virus. Combined with these measures, factors such as economic decline, job losses, and food shortages can cause numerous mental health sequelae such as depression. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness as well as cases of suicide have been reported around the world due to the pandemic and the associated feelings of anxiety and depression. The aims of this study were to investigate levels of hopelessness and depression in a sample of health care students. A random sample of students ( N = 174) enrolled in a health sciences programme at the University of the Western Cape completed the Beck Hopelessness Scale, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and a three-item Resilience Scale. The results revealed high levels of hopelessness and depression compared to previously reported normative data for these scales. In addition, the indirect effects of hopelessness on depression were significant, demonstrating the mediating role of resilience in the hopelessness–depression relationship. These results highlight a call for universities to take proactive measures in providing students with free and easily accessible resources to help them cope and manage stress during a traumatic event. More importantly, at a national level, preventive measures should be implemented to strengthen resilience in young adults.

Phosphate ore slurry is a suspension of insoluble particles of phosphate rock, the primary raw material for fertilizer and phosphoric acid, in a continuous phase of water. This suspension has a non-Newtonian flow behavior and exhibits yield stress as the shear rate tends toward zero. The suspended particles in the present study were assumed to be noncolloidal. Various grades and phosphate ore concentrations were chosen for this rheological investigation. We created some experimental protocols to determine the main characteristics of these complex fluids and established relevant rheological models with a view to simulate the numerical flow in a cylindrical pipeline. Rheograms of these slurries were obtained using a rotational rheometer and were accurately modeled with commonly used yield-pseudoplastic models. The results show that the concentration of solids in a solid–liquid mixture could be increased while maintaining a desired apparent viscosity. Finally, the design equations for the laminar pipe flow of yield pseudoplastics were investigated to highlight the role of rheological studies in this context.

AbstractLucian’s work De historia conscribenda not only presents reflections on how one should or should not write history, but also illustrates possible ways to represent the authorial activity of a historian (i. e. how one writes ‘metahistory’). In this, two basic forms can be distinguished, both of which can be understood from a narratological perspective as metalepses. In the first case, the historian is represented as the direct originator of the action; in the second he acts as a mere observer, but one who moves spatially in and with his action. Both forms of statement stand within traditions of motifs that can be traced from antiquity through to the modern era; yet Lucian nonetheless makes an innovative contribution by inscribing value judgements into the motifs. The result is the suggestion that the historian fulfils the role of observer, while the role of originator turns out to be more apt for the poet than for the historian. This permits far-reaching conclusions to be drawn about the conception of poetry and historiography as a whole.

BackgroundIdiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), is defined by increased cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) pressure in the absence of other causes of intracranial hypertension. There has been recent interest in the role of intracranial venous sinus stenosis in IIH. The raised pressures in IIH are argued to worsen by the secondary appearance of the venous sinus stenosis.Objective5 patients have undergone endovascular pressure measurement in Wales and their clinical details including history, examination, initial management, neuroimaging pre- and post venous stenting, and follow-up (6–24 months) to provide the first case study of patients undergoing Venous sinus stenting in Wales.Methods5 patients with IIH refractory to first line treatments underwent venography and manometry and 4 patients underwent stenting of the venous sinuses after this procedure had shown a pressure gradient proximal to stenosis in the lateral sinuses.ResultsThree patients were rendered asymptomatic, two were improved including one patient unmasking a different headache disorder following treatment.ConclusionsStenting in venous stenosis provides a further treatment option to patients refractory to first line treatments with IIH. This case series highlights in selected cases treatment is promising with good outcomes.

Pulmonary angiosarcoma is a rare clinical entity with a poor prognosis and no established therapeutic strategies. We present the first case to our knowledge of metastatic pulmonary angiosarcoma, treated with checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy, and have an excellent response. Until now, patient has been treated with immunotherapy for 1 year, and his disease is stable and well-tolerated.

ABSTRACT The regulation of nitrate assimilation seems to follow the same pattern in all ascomycetes where this process has been studied. We show here by in vitro binding studies and a number of protection and interference techniques that the transcription factor mediating nitrate induction in Aspergillus nidulans, a protein containing a binuclear zinc cluster DNA binding domain, recognizes an asymmetrical sequence of the form CTCCGHGG. We further show that the protein binds to its consensus site as a dimer. We establish the role of the putative dimerization element by its ability to replace the analogous element of the cI protein of phage λ. Mutagenesis of crucial leucines of the dimerization element affect both the binding ability of the dimer and the conformation of the resulting protein-DNA complex. This is the first case to be described where a dimer recognizes such an asymmetrical nonrepeated sequence, presumably by each monomeric subunit making different contacts with different DNA half-sites.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a severe clinical condition characterized mostly but not exclusively by an area of exposed bone in the mandible and/or maxilla that typically does not heal over a period of 6–8 weeks. The diagnosis is first of all clinical, but an imaging feedback such as Magnetic Resonance is essential to confirm clinical suspicions. In the last few decades, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has been widely discussed. From the first case reported in 2003, many case series and reviews have appeared in the scientific literature. Almost all papers concerning this topic conclude that bisphosphonates (BPs) can induce this severe clinical condition, particularly in cancer patients. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism by which amino-BPs would be responsible for ONJ is still debatable. Recent findings suggest a possible alternative explanation for BPs role in this pattern. In the present work we discuss how a condition of osteomalacia and low vitamin D levels might be determinant factors.
