There are various ways through which we try to capture another person’s attention. One of these ways is to address them. After trying to highlight what it is to address another person, the chapter argues that doing so generates a reason (for you, as addressee) to attend to the act. When the act of address is a speech act, matters are further complicated by the expectations parties bring, and are entitled to bring, to an (anticipated) speech exchange. If this is correct, then the act of address itself generates the most basic form of conversational pressure: in cooperative exchanges speakers who address an audience have a claim on the audience’s attention. To fail to attend to a speaker who addresses you and whose claim on your attention is part of a (would-be) cooperative exchange, the chapter argues, is to disrespect her as a rational subject.

A series of computer programs are now available for processing data whose basic form is narrative (natural language), numerical or a combination of the two. This system was developed in the Department of Biostatistics of Roswell Park Memorial Institute, to enable an investigator to have complete control of the data — from the initial stage of entering the data to the final stage of analysis. Specialized knowledge of computers is not necessary in order to implement the different procedures. By following the instructions specified in various manuals and by basically just pushing a button of a remote terminal the procedures are activated and executed. This system is actually used for maintaining the data of a head and neck cancer project.

This chapter argues that the most basic form of subjectivity is different from and more fundamental than having a self, and forwards a hypothesis about the origin of subjectivity in terms of interoception. None of those topics are new, and a consensus concerning the homeostatic-interoceptive origin of subjectivity is rapidly growing in the domains of the neurosciences and psychology. This chapter critically explores that growing consensus, and it argues that the idea that the brain topographically represents bodily states is unfit for thinking about the coming about of subjectivity. In the first part, four inherent characteristics of subjectivity are discussed from a philosophical phenomenological point of view. The second part explores whether a model of subjectivity in which interoception maintains its crucial role is possible without relying on topographical representations of the in-depth body, and giving due to the inherent characteristics of subjectivity.

The non-ideal Pragmatic theorist seeks the moral code whose usability value, if not perfect, nonetheless exceeds that of any rival code. Chapter 7 assesses the success of this approach, and concludes that it fails. Comparing codes in terms of their usability value requires more information than any agent or theorist can command. Moreover, the code with the highest usability value is shown to be the moral laundry list, which earlier chapters rejected. Finally, Chapter 7 shows that there is no guarantee that the code with the highest usability value fulfills the rationales supporting the Usability Demand. Such a code will not necessarily offer agents the basic form of justice, providing everyone with the opportunity to lead a successful moral life; nor will it necessarily better enhance social welfare than rival codes; nor will it necessarily lead to a better pattern of actions among well-motivated agents.

ABSTRACTCo EXAFS data for these Co/Ag multilayers exhibit no changes in basic form and obey a simple scaling with Co thickness down to 6Å. Over this same thickness range the giant magnetoresistance and the manner in which magnetization approaches saturation change substantially. These results indicate that local structural changes do not play a significant role in altering the magnetic properties of this multilayer system.

Protein-protein interactions are vital for executing nearly all cellular processes. To facilitate the detection of protein-protein interactions in living cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, here we present an efficient and convenient method termed the Pil1 co-tethering assay. In its basic form, we tether a bait protein to mCherry-tagged Pil1, which forms cortical filamentary structures, and examine whether a GFP-tagged prey protein colocalizes with the bait. We demonstrate that this assay is capable of detecting pairwise protein-protein interactions of cytosolic proteins and nuclear proteins. Furthermore, we show that this assay can be used for detecting not only binary protein-protein interactions, but also ternary and quaternary protein-protein interactions. Using this assay, we systematically characterized the protein-protein interactions in the Atg1 complex and in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PtdIns3K) complexes and found that Atg38 is incorporated into the PtdIns3K complex I via an Atg38-Vps34 interaction. Our data show that this assay is a useful and versatile tool and should be added to the routine toolbox of fission yeast researchers.

Swap as a portfolio of forward contract is a financial derivative traded on the over-the-counter market. In its basic form, swap is based on the exchange of future cash flows between two market participants in accordance with the agreed terms. The cash flows that are exchanged are the interest payments and in some circumstances even the notional amount, and transactions are carried out in a period of two to thirty years. Swaps first appeared in 80's, and have evolved from back-to-back loans.

The arylidene–imidazolone derivatives are a group of compounds of great interest in medicinal chemistry due to their various pharmacological actions. In order to study the possible conformations of an arylidene–imidazolone derivative, two new crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction, namely (Z)-5-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-2-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)-3H-imidazol-5(4H)-one, C15H17ClN4O, (6), and its salt 4-[5-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-3H-imidazol-2-yl]-1-methylpiperazin-1-ium 3-{5-[4-(diethylamino)benzylidene]-4-oxo-2-thioxothiazolidin-3-yl}propionate, C15H18ClN4O+·C17H19N2O3S2 −, (7). Both compounds crystallize in the space group P\overline{1}. The basic form (6) crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit. In the acid form of (6), the N atom of the piperazine ring is protonated by proton transfer from the carboxyl group of the rhodanine acid derivative. The greatest difference in the conformations of (6) and its protonated form, (6c), is observed in the location of the arylidene–imidazolone substituent at the N atom. In the case of (6c), the position of this substituent is close to axial, while for (6), the corresponding position is intermediate between equatorial and axial. The crystal packing is dominated by a network of N—H...O hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the crystal structures are stabilized by numerous intermolecular contacts of types C—H...N and C—H...Cl in (6), and C—H...O and C—H...S in (7). The geometry with respect to the location of the substituents at the N atoms of the piperazine ring was compared with other crystal structures possessing an N-methylpiperazine moiety.

A novel fine wire bone transport system for use with Ilizarov frames has been used in Bristol. It uses parallel wires instead of crossed wires. Its stiffness has been tested and compared with a crossed wire construct. In its basic form it is not as stiff to bending and shear loading, however, by modification it can be made at least as stiff. A parallel wire construct does not transfix as much soft tissue as a crossed wire construct when used in the leg. This is advantageous, because soft tissue transfixion causes pain and limb swelling, which impair patient mobilization.
