Examining ensemble interaction in the music of experimental composer Christian Wolff, this chapter uses as a case study a professional recording session undertaken by the ensemble Apartment House of <em>Exercises</em> (1973–2013), a series of pieces for (mostly) unspecified instrumentation and numbers of players. Wolff’s skeletal notation is deliberately under-determined, acting like something of a puzzle to be solved. Consequently, the players must negotiate a way of working with the notation and with each other, making decisions prior to, and during, the moment of performance. Drawing on interviews and observational studies, the chapter identifies three different forms of interaction in the musicians’ playing as they engaged with Wolff’s notation: working responsively, independently, and emergently. The chapter offers a view of ensemble interaction that is characterized by cooperation, but also uncertainty, surprise, or even complete breakdown.

This chapter examines ensemble dynamics and time consciousness in indeterminate music, using John Cage’s Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957–8) as a case study. Drawing on interviews and observational studies undertaken with the experimental music ensemble Apartment House, I examine the role of temporal indeterminacy in the socio-musical interactions that characterize performance, and its implications for the musicians’ experiences. In doing so, the chapter makes a broader contribution in its consideration of the ways in which issues of authorship and authority are negotiated in such temporal interactions, and how the dynamics of these negotiations present a sociality based on a ‘separate togetherness’, whereby performers play together (out of time) with one another.

Beckett's famous claim that his writing seeks to ‘work on the nerves of the audience, not the intellect’ points to the centrality of affect in his work. But while his writing's affective quality is widely acknowledged by readers of his work, its refusal of intellect has made it difficult to take fully into account in scholarly work on Beckett. Taking Beckett's 1967 short prose text Ping as a case study, this essay is an attempt to take the affective qualities of Beckett's writing seriously and to consider the implications of his affectively dense writing for his texts’ relationship to history. I argue that Ping's affect emerges from the rhythms of its prose, producing a highly ‘speakable’ text in which affect precedes interpretation. In Ping, however, this affective rhythmic patterning is portrayed as mechanical, the product of the machinic ‘ping’ that punctuates the text and the text's own mechanical rhythms, demanding the active involvement of the reader. The essay concludes by arguing that Ping's mechanised affect is a specifically historical feeling. Arising from a specifically twentieth-century anxiety about technology's tendency to evacuate ‘natural’ emotion in favour of inhuman affect, it participates in a tradition of affectively resonant but curiously blank or indifferent performances of cyborg embodiment. Read in this historical light, Ping's implication of the reader in the production of its mechanised affect grants it, from our contemporary perspective, an archival quality. At the same time, it asks us to broaden the way in which we understand the Beckettian text's relationship to history, pointing to the existence of a more complex and recursive relationship between literature, its historical moment, and our contemporary moment of reading. Such a post-archival historicism sees texts as generated by but not bound to their historical moments of composition, and understands the moment of reception as an integral, if shifting, part of the text's history.

AbstractThis paper investigates the design and development of bio-inspired suture pins that would reduce the insertion force and thereby reducing the pain in the patients. Inspired by kingfisher's beak and porcupine quills, the conceptual design of the suture pin is developed by using a unique ideation methodology that is proposed in this research. The methodology is named as Domain Integrated Design, which involves in classifying bio-inspired structures into various domains. There is little work done on such bio-inspired multifunctional aspect. In this research we have categorized the vast biological functionalities into domains namely, cellular structures, shapes, cross-sections, and surfaces. Multi-functional bio-inspired structures are designed by combining different domains. In this research, the hypothesis is verified by simulating the total deformation of tissue and the needle at the moment of puncture. The results show that the bio-inspired suture pin has a low deformation on the tissue at higher velocities at the puncture point and low deformation in its own structure when an axial force (reaction force) is applied to its tip. This makes the design stiff and thus require less force of insertion.

PurposeThis paper aims to determine the stage of the life cycle where the trucks of a waste collection fleet from a Colombian city are located through a reliability approach. The reliability analysis and the evaluation of curve of operational costs allow to know the moment in which it is necessary to make decisions regarding an asset, its maintenance or possible replacement.Design/methodology/approachFor a dataset presented as maintenance work orders, the time to failures (TTFs) for each vehicle in the fleet were calculated. Then, a probability density function for those TTFs was fitted to locate each vehicle in a region of the bathtub curve and to calculate the reliability of the whole fleet. A general functional analysis was also developed to understand the function of the vehicles.FindingsIt was possible to determine that the largest proportion of the fleet was in the final stage of the life cycle, in this sense, the entire fleet represent critical assets which in most of cases could be worth replacement or overhaul.Originality/valueIn this study, an address is exposed for the identification of critical equipment by reliability and statistical analysis. This analysis is also integrated with the maintenance management process. This is a broadly interested topic since it allows to support the maintenance and operational decision-making process, indicating the focus of resource allocation all over the entire asset life cycle.

The objective of this case study is to observe the existence of an anticipation mechanism at the muscle groups level of the upper limbs. We tried to highlighted this anticipation process by measuring the potential of surface electric for some muscle groups representing the kinematic chain on the right side, involved in the motor action of catching a basketball and a 3kg medicine ball with two hands to the chest. We conducted a case study of a 13-year-old child, female gender. As a measurement method, we used surface electromyography signals of the EMG Trigno Delsys wireless system with 16 electrodes. We determined the moment when the muscles come into action by increasing the potential of surface electric and the moment when the action of catching the ball takes place, using the information provided by the accelerometers incorporated in the sensors of the Delsys equipment used. Therefore, we obtained information about how different muscle groups come into action which helped us to get an idea of how the child's movement is structured. Based on results of accelerations and EMG signals acquired we have formulated conclusions regarding the neuromuscular control of the tested subject. We also planned for the future to test a larger group of participants in the study research of anticipation mechanism in children who do not practice any performance sports.

ABSTRAK Mesin terdiri dari sekumpulan elemen mesin yang diam dan bergerak. Elemen mesin yang bergerak dengan gerakan berputar disebut benda putar. Pada beberapa kasus seringkali diinginkan pengurangan massa dari benda putar tersebut untuk alasan ekonomis, biasanya untuk elemen mesin yag diproduksi massal. Namun pengurangan massa berakibat pada pengurangan momen inersia massa benda putar bersangkutan. Jika tuntutan perancangan tidak mempermasalahkan perubahan tersebut, maka pengurangan massa tidak menjadi masalah. Namun jika momen inersia massa tidak boleh terlalu rendah, maka harus dicari kompromi dimana pengurangan massa sebesar-besarnya namun penurunan momen inersia massa sekecil-kecilnya. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan studi kasus terhadap benda putar berjari- jari 10 cm jari-jari dalam hub 2 cm dan jari-jari luar hub 4 cm. Jumlah jari-jari ada 4 dengan lebar 1 cm dan tebal benda putar 0,5 cm. Variasi pengurangan massa dilakukan dengan memvariasikan jari-jari- dalam rim. Untuk tiap variasi, dilakukan perhitungan untuk mendapatkan jumlah massa yang dapat dikurangi dan momen inersia massa dari benda putar. Ternyata pada nilai jari-jari dalam tertentu, dapat diperoleh nilai kompromi dari permasalahan diatas. Kata kunci: benda putar, penghematan bahan, momen inersia massa.  ABSTRACT Machine consists of a set of machine elements that still and moving. Machine elements that move in a circular motion called rotary object. In some cases it is often desirable reduction in the mass of the rotating object for economic reasons, usually for a mass production of machine elements. But the mass reduction results in a reduction in moment of inertia of the mass. If the demands of the design allow this decrease of moment of inertia, mass reduction is not a problem. But if the moment of inertia of the masses should not be too low, it must find a compromise in which a mass reduction profusely but the decrease in the mass moment of inertia of the smallest. In this research conducted a case study of rotating element radius of 10 cm, radius of the hub 2 cm and outer radius hub 4 cm. The number of spoke are 4 with a width of 1 cm and uniform thickness 0.5 cm all over rotating element. Variations mass reduction is done by varying the inner radius of the rim. For each variation, calculation is performed to obtain the amount of mass that can be reduced and the mass moment of inertia of the rotating object. It turned out that in the certain value of inner radius of the rim in particular, can compromise the values obtained from the above problem. This kind of location can attract the tourist especially specific tourist who always searching the specific destination since it is not many kind of destination like this. The main concept is staying in natural village with traditional villa style and look like the traditional house in the past including the furniture inside and how to cook the food by burning wood. This kind of situation also completed with daily people around the village activities, traditional art show, transportation to Mount Bromo, golf and other activities. The marketing activities will be used the relationship of the owner with his channels abroad, community of specific tourism, you tube, social media and online travel agent. This opportunity is good to be developed in the future since many inquiry for this kind of specific tourism, increase the economy level of the people around and create more working opportunity.

The research question in this chapter is whether clusters are good entrepreneurial ecosystems to enhance social and responsible behavior in SMEs at regional level. We will address institutional efforts in Corporate Social Responsibility carried out in the Autonomous Region of Extremadura in Spain as case study because the regional government, with the aim of promoting business cooperation to enhance competitiveness, decided to develop a clustering policy for SMEs in the region. Additionally, since 2010 the region has developed its own plan for the promotion of responsibility at regional level. To answer the question we have carried out focus groups with representative businesses´ managers belonging to the existing and operative clusters in Extremadura at the moment.
