This chapter highlights British composer Brian Elias’s Once Did I Breathe Another’s Breath (2012), a substantial and highly satisfying cycle. The piano part is quite complex and demanding, requiring a player with very safe hands—this is very much a duo partnership. A carefully chosen selection of five texts from the seventeenth century dwells on the theme of love—the first four poems reflecting its happier side, and the final song rueing the fact that its joys fade with time. The warmest resonances of the baritone voice are used to best effect, and there are several moments of heightened sensitivity where the voice rises to soft, sustained high notes which will need good support. The piano writing is full-textured, often intricate and fast-moving, and it pilots the changing moods of the texts. Ultimately, the exceptionally unified musical language maintains cohesion through the cycle, which should make a powerful and lasting impression.

This chapter studies songs for the tenor repertoire by Hans Werner Henze. Henze’s three songs, based on texts by the poet W. H. Auden, are a key example of his fastidious and beautifully-crafted vocal writing. Henze sets these three contrasting poems with utmost sensitivity. The fast-moving texts contain layers of subtlety, couched in a concise, freely chromatic musical language which sits easily in the voice. The settings build cumulatively in proportion and weight. A tiny, poignant tribute to a dead cat leads to a powerfully intuitive, four-verse portrait of the poet Arthur Rimbaud. This is followed by a substantial love song, full of tenderness and passion, yet controlled with consummate skill. The work is written in standard notation (without bar-lines) and should prove a rewarding vehicle for singers of relatively modest attainment as well as mature artists.

This article considers the paradoxical manifestations of rejection or suspicion concerning the voice and the feminine at the very moment of the creation of tragédie lyrique at the end of the seventeenth century in France. It examines the relationship between these elements and asks what they have in common that may be perceived as threatening. What is at stake is not only the period's capacity to experiment with pleasure through the elaboration of rules, but also, beyond this delimited historical perspective, the appreciation of the element of danger that is inherent in the experience of any artistic performance, and the roles played by the voice and the feminine in such an experience.

AbstractThis is a modified subtotal laryngectomy. On the tumour-free side of the larynx, some posterior structures, with their neurovascular supply are preserved. The endolaryngeal mucosa is tubed in continuity with the trachea below and projects into the pharynx above. Thus a myomucosal shunt is formed. Air is directed into it by finger occlusion of the tracheal stoma. The voice production is highly satisfactory. Aspiration is prevented by constriction of the thyroarytenoid muscle which provides a valved upper end of the tube. The possibility of leaving tumour in the laryngeal remnant is eliminated by careful selection of patients, and re-confirmation of tumour extent intra-operatively and a frozen section.Eleven such operations have been performed since October 1983 for squamous cell carcinoma, some previously irradiated. None of the patients had local recurrence. Only one had an aspiration problem which later resolved. All acquired a satisfactory voice

In recent times, vocal fold problems have been increasing dramatically due to unhealthy social habits and voice abuse. Non-invasive methods like acoustic analysis of voice signals can be used to investigate such problems. Various feature extraction techniques are used to classify the voice signals into normal and pathological. Among them, long-time acoustical parameters are used by many researchers. The selection of best long-time acoustical parameters is very important to reduce the computational complexity, as well as to achieve better accuracy with minimum number of features. In order to select best long-time acoustical parameters, different feature reduction methods or feature selection methods are proposed by researchers. In this work, genetic algorithm (GA) based optimal selection of long-time acoustical parameters is proposed to achieve higher accuracy with minimum number of features. The classification is carried out using k-nearest neighbourhood (k-NN) classifier. In comparison with other works in the literature, the simulation results show that a minimum of 5 features are required to classify the voice signals by GA and a better accuracy of 94.29% is achieved.

This article studies the mobility of human voices in Basilio Martín Patino’s series of television films about Andalusia. It explores the voice as an object of cinematic representation and as a focal point of affective investments in a transnational context of postcolonial and neo-colonial power struggles. Furthermore, it scrutinizes a selection of voices that speak and sing throughout the series and considers the location of these voices across the soundtrack of Patino’s films. Through its mobile vocal aesthetic, Patino’s film series gestures towards an ethics of representation in which flamenco becomes a wandering signifier that can only be envisioned in the plural, through a myriad set of accented voices and memories.

This paper aims to discover how to frame Muhammadiyah’s political direction news in the 2019 Presidential Election on Republika.co.id, Kumparan.com, and Tribunnews.com. From this phenomenon arises a question of precisely the political direction of Muhammadiyah in the 2019 Presidential Election? The method used in this research is the framing analysis of Robert N. Entman’s model, which states that each media constructing news must go through two stages, namely the selection of issues and the highlighting of aspects. Analyzing data obtained through 4 steps, (1) Define problems, (2) Diagnose causes, (3) Make moral judgment, and (4) Treatment Recommendation. This research shows that Muhammadiyah is a social organization in an association engaged in da'wah Amar Ma'ruf Nahi Munkar and Tajdid. Muhammadiyah as a religious movement has always been a lyric for the participants of the presidential election because it has an excellent political power second after Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), which is said to be a representation of the voice of Muslims. In early September, the number one vice-presidential candidate, Ma'ruf Amin, visited the central office. Muhammadiyah, and the previous month, the number two pair, Prabowo-Sandiaga, also asked for a blessing to participate in the 5th Annual event. After that, I reveal that this study showed three online mass media: Republika.co.id, Kumparan.com, and Tribunnews.com in their coverage of Muhammadiyah's political direction in the 2019 presidential election were neutral. Muhammadiyah, as a religious organization, chose consistency to maintain neutrality in the presidential election and give all Muhammadiyah citizens freedom to vote at the five-yearly event.

Paraules clau: to barroc, poesia i música del segle XVII, bucolisme líric, estudi interdisciplinar, llenguatge poeticomusical.   Abstract: The bucolic landscape became a kind of sheet music and metalyrical game in baroque tonos in such a way that it seems as if the performers and the voices that sing them have only to follow the indications that the poetic topics dictate from the text so that the sonority, harmony and music were possible. It is very curious also that, so belatedly, it was on the subject of pastoral-bucolic love the pretext with which the incipient art of the tono was more experimental. Only this musical motif could justify, that, at the beginning of the XVII century, the compositions of bucolic tonos proliferated and of those others that are centered in a Nature, although not idealized, not noticed by the later egocentric pantheism. In this work we will focus, therefore, on the causes of this effort of musical originality and its achievements, as well as the repercussion that it had on musicalized poetry. We will also follow the poetic-musical evolution of the bucolic-pastoral tono along with the best peninsular composers (some still unknown) to end up offering the most significant characteristics that allow us to fix it as one of the important typologies of the history of the peninsular music of the XVII century. Keywords: Baroque tono; Poetry and music of the seventeenth century; Lyric bucolicism; Interdisciplinary study; Poetic-musical language.

We will observe which stem allomorph the affixes, the so-called ˋnon-past' affix, the past affix, the imperative affix, the negative affix and the voice affix-like verbs, select between the longer and the shorter in Japanese-Yanagawa dialect on the assumption that verbal lexemes may be associated with more than one stem. Observing the phenomenon more closely, we found that the verbal stem forms entertain default implicative relations in the stem dependency hierarchy. We will propose i) an implemented analysis of the past affix and ii) an implementation of the allomorph selections by the ˋnon-past' affix in Koga and Ono, 2010 as two examples.
