Vocal Music and Pedagogy of Chinese, African, and Indian Genres

China, Africa, and India have long vocal traditions dating back hundreds and even thousands of years. Supporting the vocal music of these countries and continents are pedagogical systems which are as much a part of the unique musical and cultural heritage of each location as the vocal music they serve. In many African countries and in China, the languages are tonal languages, each of which has wielded a strong influence upon the character of the country’s vocal music. This chapter examines the vocal music and vocal instruction of each country/continent, and also provides a description of current trends in vocal pedagogy. In particular, the influence of Western society and technology are discussed. Some countries, such as China, have undertaken government-led programs to preserve and promote earlier forms of music-making, while others have adapted to technological advancements by using new means to teach older traditions.

Trans and gender-expansive (TGE) singers experience music-making challenges specific to their vocal instruments. This chapter is devoted solely to choirs and the TGE students who sing in them. A brief opening discussion contextualizes how vocal music can be a gendered art form. Challenges and potential solutions are described for singers participating in single-gender choirs. The middle section of the chapter focuses on inclusive vocal pedagogy, including discussions of congruence of voice identity and gender identity, voice part identification, and the application of Universal Design for Learning to choral classrooms. Voice masculinization and voice feminization are described, with a focus on how they might impact singers’ voices. Healthy group vocal technique exercises are discussed, with examples provided in Appendix D. Additional suggestions for inclusive choral techniques include ideas for standing and seating rehearsal arrangements and working with heteronormative and cisnormative texts.

Background: African countries have the highest number of people living with HIV (PWH). The continent is home to 12% of the global population, but accounts for 71% of PWH globally. Antiretroviral therapy has played an important role in the reduction of the morbidity and mortality rates for HIV, which necessitates increased surveillance of the threats from pernicious risks to which PWH who live longer remain exposed. This includes cardiopulmonary comorbidities, which pose significant public health and economic challenges. A significant contributor to the cardiopulmonary comorbidities is tobacco smoking. Indeed, globally, PWH have a 2–4-fold higher utilization of tobacco compared to the general population, leading to endothelial dysfunction and atherogenesis that result in cardiopulmonary diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary artery disease. In the context of PWH, we discuss (1) the current trends in cigarette smoking and (2) the lack of geographically relevant data on the cardiopulmonary conditions associated with smoking; we then review (3) the current evidence on chronic inflammation induced by smoking and the potential pathways for cardiopulmonary disease and (4) the multifactorial nature of the syndemic of smoking, HIV, and cardiopulmonary diseases. This commentary calls for a major, multi-setting cohort study using a syndemics framework to assess cardiopulmonary disease outcomes among PWH who smoke. Conclusion: We call for a parallel program of implementation research to promote the adoption of evidence-based interventions, which could improve health outcomes for PWH with cardiopulmonary diseases and address the health inequities experienced by PWH in African countries.

In this paper, we explore the interrelationships between knowledge construction in the field of Vocal Pedagogy and compositional forms of the academic music of the 20th century. We propose that research logics within Vocal Technique contributed to the thinking of the time providing a matrix to consider the vocal instrument from an objectivist position. The importance of the inquiries presented lies on the slow expansion that contemporary vocal music acquired in the last years, and in the absence of a Vocal Technique teaching method that considers the particular characteristics of this repertoire. As a current challenge, we consider necessary to chart a new model in Vocal Technique that favors the interpretation of the vocal repertoire of the 20th Century, and to establish a corpus of knowledge about (i) which are the new required skills and abilities, (ii) how they are produced, and (iii) how they should be taught.

Cultural heritage preservation is a sine qua non for the effective technological, scientific, and economic development of nations across the world. This follows the theory stating that culture is life and that there is a cultural factor in technological development. In view of this truism, most African states and social institutions have these last years embarked on multifaceted tactics aimed at heritage conservation in their respective national territories. These preservation efforts have yielded only patchy fruits as they are confronted to the forces of modernism and globalization. Thus, modernism and globalization have continued to represent big threats to heritage preservation in many African countries. This chapter illustrates this thesis through a comparative study of cultural heritage management in Cameroon and Nigeria. The chapter begins by examining the extent to which heritage preservation is feasible in an era governed by modernism and globalization before exploring similarities and differences in the ways modernism and globalization affect heritage preservation in Nigeria and Cameroon.

Cultural heritage (CH) tells us about our roots, and therefore, constitutes a rich value for the society. Its conservation, dissemination, and understanding are of utmost importance. In order to preserve CH for the upcoming generations, it needs to be documented, a process that nowadays is done digitally. Current trends involve a set of technologies (cameras, scanners, etc.) for the shape and radiometric acquisition of assets. Also, intangible CH can be digitally documented in a variety of forms. Having such assets virtualized, a proper dissemination channel is of relevance, and recently, new technologies that make use of interaction paradigms have emerged. Among them, in this chapter, the authors focus their attention in the technologies of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and serious games (SGs). They aim to explore these technologies in order to show their benefits in the dissemination and understanding of CH. Though the work involving them is not trivial, and usually a multidisciplinary team is required, the benefits for CH make them worth it.

Due to colonisation and globalisation, ethnic cultures are changing and Botswana’s ethnic cultures are no exception to this change. This study aims to explore how the ethnic culture of different tribes in Botswana can be used to inspire the design of new products. A case study was conducted with students at the University of Botswana on particular themes of ethnic cultural knowledge, which inspired them to design futuristic innovative products. Visual analysis was used to assess the student designs for how they informed current trends without distorting their ethnic cultural meaning. The findings indicated that students were able to design using their own cultural heritage, to work in teams, thus, attaining soft skills, and to modernise ethnic cultural symbols to design symbolic, innovative, and futuristic products.

This article focuses on important factors in the creation of enhanced personalised experiences in virtual environments for cultural heritage applications, especially those targeting virtual museums and exhibitions. Some of the most important factors relating to personalised virtual museums that relate to intelligent content and user modelling in virtual environments are being highlighted and discussed. After an extensive review of the current trends in the domain, the article presents a generalised framework for the development of the next generation enhanced VR experiences in personalised virtual museums. This framework, which naturally surfaces from the domain, was put to the test in the development of the DynaMus platform and two case studies based on this platform are referenced and commented to support such an approach. This concept can serve as the general framework for developing enhanced personalised virtual environments for cultural heritage applications.

Julius Eichberg (1824-1893) made valuable contributions to the development of music education through his string and vocal instruction in Boston. Educated in Europe, Eichberg was a violin professor in Geneva before immigrating to the United States in 1857. He directed the Boston Museum Concerts 1859-1866 and composed four operas. In 1867, he founded the Boston Conservatory, developed its string department, and published string method books and chamber music. In the Boston public schools, Eichberg taught high school vocal music, supervised music for the entire school system, and taught teacher-training courses. Boston s school system became a model for other school systems. The annual Music Festivals in Boston, with Eichberg conducting choruses and orchestras, brought the schools positive publicity. Eichberg also composed choral works for his school choruses and edited music textbooks. Eichbergs work in string education and high school choral music laid foundations for programs in the twentieth century.
