This article, which explores ensemble teaching models using the learning experiences of the Monash University World Music Orchestra (Australia) as an example, discusses both indigenous and world music in an ensemble setting. It also includes definitive processes for teaching both indigenous and world music ensembles, an investigation of teaching and learning challenges, and solutions for teachers. Learning and teaching principles and methods that facilitate multiple approaches toward the acquisition of skills and knowledge are discussed in an ordered teaching plan. Challenges, strategies, and solutions are central to the analysis, and use case studies as a guide.

In this paper I have shared some of my experiences on how to handle case studies in teaching with the intent to facilitate more discussions during our meeting over the two day conference on “research informed teaching” at Samtse College of Education organized by the Royal University of Bhutan in October 2014. We know that case studies are stories used as knowledge and skill transfer vehicles by which a lot of real life scenario is brought into the classroom to be discussed by the students and instructors. How we use case studies dependsuponthe objectives and the format of the course. My experience suggest that if it is a regular university dictated course with astrict timetable (one hour period everyday per subject) with pre-identified contents and has a large class size,it is not normally possible or at least not meaningfully efficient to go beyond the use ofsimple cases that will only help to illustrate the subject concepts and demonstrate afew practical aspects. However, if the class is smaller and the course is more discussion based with properly designed sessions, we choose to use cases through complex analysis thereby guiding the students in a step-wise fashionin the analysis of relevant information, problem identification and option evaluation. Whatever may be the format of the course or the class in which we use case studies, it is important that we, as case teachers, prepare ourselves well and know all the issues involved in the case, prepare questions in advance and prompt discussions and debate in the class, and anticipate where students might run into problems. Needless to mention that we encounter within the class, few or even all students findingthemselves out of place when case studies are used; it particularly true in the Bhutanese situation as our teaching and learning system is historically predominant with the traditional lecture method. To overcome such problems, it is essential to prepare students for case based learning methods. We must know about our students’ backgrounds in advance so that wecan productively draw on their areas of expertise, experiences and personalities to enhance the discussionandenrich learning across the board as facilitators rather than acting as a traditional teacher[1].

Teachers in higher education are confronted with a confusing and fragmented range of learning and teaching models for learners who are not traditional on-campus students. This chapter examines the development of guidelines to assist in the reshaping of a coursework Master’s program in project management offered at a regional university. Using a coursework program as a case study, a holistic exploration has been carried out of the critical issues associated with teaching and learning at a distance, with a focus on the three layers of the institutional environment, the pedagogical frameworks and the learning setting of the actual students. The research methodology and design are discussed and the outcomes are presented to provide guidance for administrators, teachers and learners. The major outcome of this study is a holistic framework of Distance Education Learning Principles for Higher Education (DELPHE) as a meaningful tool for reshaping postgraduate distance education learning and teaching models.

MegaSoTL projects are SoTL projects that generate evidence of learning from multiple institutions. While being increasingly practiced, MegaSoTL projects and their potential contribution to improve higher education pedagogy remain understudied in higher education literature. In this paper, we introduce Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT) and ManyClasses, as two MegaSoTL case studies and we describe their research goals, processes and administration. We then discuss the potentials and challenges of MegaSoTL projects for educational developers to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning at micro and mega levels. The paper concludes with recommendations to develop a collaborative infrastructure for supporting MegaSoTL projects.

This chapter asks an important, yet seemingly illusive, question: In what ways does the internet provide (or not) activist—or, for present purposes “artivist”—opportunities and engagements for musicing, music sharing, and music teaching and learning? According to Asante (2008), an “artivist (artist + activist) uses her artistic talents to fight and struggle against injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation” (p. 6). Given this view, can (and should) social media be a means to achieve artivism through online musicing and music sharing, and, therefore, music teaching and learning? Taking a feminist perspective, this chapter interrogates the nature of cyber musical artivism as a potential means to a necessary end: positive transformation. In what ways can social media be a conduit (or hindrance) for cyber musical artivism? What might musicing and music sharing gain (or lose) from engaging with online artivist practices? In addition to a philosophical investigation, this chapter will examine select case studies of online artivist music making and music sharing communities with the above concerns in mind, specifically as they relate to music education.

It is debatable whether it is appropriate to assess performance in the arts. However, formal education institutions and the systems within which they operate continue to require summative assessment to take place in order to award qualifications. This chapter considers the extent to which such summative assessment systems in music determine not only what is taught but also what learners learn. The evidence suggests that any learning outcome in formal education that is not assessed is unlikely to be given priority by either learners or teachers. To optimize learning, the aims and the processes of learning, including formative, self-, and peer assessment procedures, should be aligned with summative assessment. Research addressing the roles, methods, and value of formative, self-, and peer assessment in enhancing learning is considered. A proposal is made that the most appropriate way of enhancing learning is to ensure that summative assessment procedures are authentic and have real-life relevance supporting the teaching and learning process, to ensure that learners are motivated and see the relevance of what they are learning. This might take many forms depending on musical genre, communities of practice, and the wider cultural environment.

AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic has presented an opportunity for rethinking assumptions about education in general and higher education in particular. In the light of the general crisis the pandemic caused, especially when it comes to the so-called emergency remote teaching (ERT), educators from all grades and contexts experienced the necessity of rethinking their roles, the ways of supporting the students’ learning tasks and the image of students as self-organising learners, active citizens and autonomous social agents. In our first Postdigital Science and Education paper, we sought to distil and share some expert advice for campus-based university teachers to adapt to online teaching and learning. In this sequel paper, we ask ourselves: Now that campus-based university teachers have experienced the unplanned and forced version of Online Learning and Teaching (OLT), how can this experience help bridge the gap between online and in-person teaching in the following years? The four experts, also co-authors of this paper, interviewed aligning towards an emphasis on pedagogisation rather than digitalisation of higher education, with strategic decision-making being in the heart of post-pandemic practices. Our literature review of papers published in the last year and analysis of the expert answers reveal that the ‘forced’ experience of teaching with digital technologies as part of ERT can gradually give place to a harmonious integration of physical and digital tools and methods for the sake of more active, flexible and meaningful learning.

This overview of six years of research on language learning and teaching in Austria covers a period of dynamic development in the field. While all the studies reviewed here illustrate research driven by a combination of local and global concerns and theoretical frameworks, some specific clusters of research interest emerge. The first of these focuses on issues connected with multilingualism in present-day society in terms of language policy, theory development and, importantly, the critical scrutiny of dominant discursive practices in connection with minority and migrant languages. In combination with this focus, there is a concern with German as a second or foreign language in a number of contexts. A second cluster concerns the area of language testing and assessment, which has gained political import due to changes in national education policy and the introduction of standardized tests. Finally, a third cluster of research concerns the diverse types of specialized language instruction, including the introduction of foreign language instruction from age six onwards, the rise of academic writing instruction, English-medium education and, as a final more general issue, the role of English as a dominant language in the canon of all foreign and second languages in Austria.
