Integrating Cultural Competency Throughout a First-Year Physician Assistant Curriculum Steadily Improves Cultural Awareness

Purpose: Many Physician Assistant (PA) programs have recently integrated cultural competency into their curricula. However, there is little evidence tracking the longitudinal effectiveness of curricula on culture competency. This study tested whether amount of exposure to a cultural competency curriculum affected self-assessments of cultural awareness among two cohorts of students. Method: Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 students completed a cultural awareness survey at the beginning of the program and retook the survey at three intervals during the first year. Results: Regression analyses confirmed significant linear relationships (two-tailed α < .05) between responses and interval number on all questions for each cohort, with exception of Question 8 for Cohort 2. Conclusion: Results from Cohort 2 replicated those from Cohort 1 suggesting that cultural awareness among PA students benefits from repeated exposure to lessons on cultural competency. Schools attempting to develop or expand cultural awareness among students should consider integrating cultural competency training throughout the PA curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to investigate an interdisciplinary international service learning program and its impact on student sense of cultural awareness and competence using the Campinha-Bacote’s (2002) framework of cultural competency model. Seven undergraduate and one graduate student from Human Development and Nutrition Science disciplines participated in the program. Reflections from a synthesis paper post-travel were analyzed using an inductive approach. Six themes emerged from the reflective journals and were applied to Campinha-Bacote’s cultural competency constructs. Participating and learning together while reflecting helped deepen and progress this process for ISL students. Overall, the experience proved to be an effective educational tool for sensitizing students towards cultural competency within interdisciplinary programs.

Background: Nurses as one of the health professionals who are expecting to have competence in providing nursing care to patients based on cultural background.Purpose: To describe the cultural competency and nursing care among sundanese nurses' ethnic group in Indonesia..Method: A descriptive design with a quantitative approach. The sampling technique in this study used Cluster Random Sampling with the sample of 63 respondents. The instrument used the NCCS (Nurse Cultural Competence Scale). This research conducted on April 2019 at dr. Slamet Hospital, Garut - IndonesiaResults: Shows that the nurses' cultural competencies in dr. Slamet hospital was in a low category of 37 respondents (58.7%). While in a component, cultural awareness was in the low category (60.3%), the cultural knowledge component was in the high category (52.4%), the cultural sensitivity component was in the low category (58.7%) and the cultural skills component in the high category (58.7%).Conclusion: The most nurses' cultural competencies  was in a low category such as cultural awareness was in the low category (60.3%), the cultural sensitivity component was in the low category. Sundanese nurses' ethnic group need to develop training in culturally competent as a local wisdom.

Using case study method, this project examines the perceptions and practices related to development of self and cultural awareness among a cohort of 104 (n=104) first-year students, all aspiring to become future teachers. Over the course of one academic semester, first year students who planned to enter the teacher education program participated in readings, activities, assignments, field based observations, and discussions developed to facilitate self and cultural awareness. The findings from analyses of these artifacts indicate that pre-service teachers began to demonstrate deeper awareness of how personal opinions and biases influenced their interactions with others and the types of characteristics related to appreciating diversity (Akiba, 2011) in urban classrooms. This study has implications for engaging first year students in early field-based clinical experiences in order to develop self and cultural awareness in preparation for teaching.

Introduction Saudi Arabia’s culturally diverse population is growing rapidly. The need for cultural competence is greatest in pediatric units where nurses provide care to children in collaboration with their parents. Method Nonprobability sampling of 394 nurses and cross-sectional descriptive design was used to investigate nurses’ cultural competence, and to examine the relationships between the variables and participants’ demographic data in pediatric units across five hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by asking nurses to complete a self-report questionnaire. Results The results suggest a high degree of cultural competency. Participants’ scores indicated high levels of perceived cultural awareness, sensitivity, and cultural competence behavior for performance. Discussion This study supports the 3-D Puzzle Model of culturally congruent care for cultural competence, which assumes that cultural competence is deeply influenced by one’s experiences. The findings revealed a high level of cultural competence despite a lack of information with respect to patient views.

As numbers of culturally diverse students rise, struggles with language, cultural differences, and health care create challenges for school nurses. The focus of this quality improvement project was to utilize the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) as a framework to initiate cultural competency development among school nurses. Eighteen public school nurses attended programming that began with the webinar “CLAS is in Session,” an introduction to the standards as applicable to school nursing practice. Outcome measures included self-report of cultural awareness and sensitivity (CAS) and culturally competent behaviors (CCB). A greater percentage of nurses reported feeling “somewhat competent” after program completion, though CAS and CCB scores did not significantly change. Despite lack of measurable improvement in CCB, implementation of the CLAS Standards created an important starting point for CC programming.

The Localities Embracing and Accepting Diversity (LEAD) program aimed to improve the mental health of Aboriginal Victorians by addressing racial discrimination and facilitating social and economic participation. As part of LEAD, Whittlesea Council adopted the Aboriginal Employment Pathways Strategy (AEPS) to increase Aboriginal employment and retention within the organisation. The Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training Program was developed to build internal cultural competency and skills in recruiting and retaining Aboriginal staff. Analysis of surveys conducted before (pre; n = 124) and after (post; n = 107) the training program indicated a significant increase in participant understanding across all program objectives and in support of organisational policies to improve Aboriginal recruitment and retention. Participants ended the training with concrete ideas about intended changes, as well as how these changes could be supported by their supervisors and the wider organisation. Significant resources have since been allocated to implementing the AEPS over 5 years. In line with principles underpinning the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2013–23, particularly the focus on addressing racism as a determinant of health, this paper explores the AEPS and training program as promising approaches to health promotion through addressing barriers to Aboriginal employment. Possible implications for other large organisations are also considered.
