Because dementia is difficult to treat, the best way is to detect the prodromal stage; this can identify those at high risk of dementia and help to delay its onset. It is a well-known fact that gait has a high correlation with cognitive function. Considering that dementia starts with cognitive decline, investigating the association between cognitive decline and gait may contribute to the detection of elderly individuals at high risk of dementia and even the prevention of dementia. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the gait cycle and biomechanics of elderly people with and without cognitive decline. A three-dimensional motion analysis system was used, and older adults over 65 participated in this study. K-MoCA was used to assess cognitive function and, according to the results of a cognition function assessment, they were classified into two groups. Spatiotemporal variables, subdivisions of the gait cycle, joint angle, joint moment, joint power, and support moment were investigated. Significant differences between both groups appeared in the subdivisions of the gait cycle, and parameters of gait biomechanics were established. These results provide insight into the mechanism dictating the gait of elderly individuals with cognitive decline.

Abstract Latinos have high risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Self-rated health (SRH) has been used to predict cognitive decline. Early detection of executive function changes may help identify those at higher risk of cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between SRH and executive function in Latinos. Latinos (N=333, 84.4% female, Mage= 64.9 ± 7.08) from the BAILA randomized controlled trial self-rated their health as 1) poor/fair, 2) good, and 3) very good/excellent. Executive function was assessed by the Trail-making B, Verbal Fluency, Stroop C & CW, and the Digit Modality tests and stratified by SRH. One-way analysis of variance showed that the effect of SRH was significant for Trails B, F(2,298)=4.01, p=.019 and Stroop CW, F(2,298)=3.07, p=.048. Tukey’s test indicated that participants who rated their health as fair/poor took longer to complete Trails B (M=196.78±83.0 seconds) compared to those who rated their health as good (M=185.25 ± 85.1 seconds) and very good/excellent (M=149.25±95.3 seconds). Stroop CW results demonstrated that those in the fair/poor health category scored lower (M=17.22±6.6) than those in good (M=19.70±8.5 words/minutes) and very good/excellent health categories (M=18.73±8.2 words/minute). In sum, the results suggest SRH is related to executive function such that lower categories of SRH are indicative of poorer executive function. SRH might be used as a proxy for executive function and as a tool that community leaders can use to identify individuals at high risk of ADRD in need of behavioral interventions.

Introduction: Age-related cognitive decline or cognitive aging is largely the result of structural and functional decline in specific areas of the brain, but lifestyle also contributes to this cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of working memory rehabilitation on visual memory and memory span in ageing. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest design and a control group. The study population included all elderly people who lived in Bukan Nursing Home from April to July 2019 (N = 120). Among these individuals, 30 elderly people were selected by convenience sampling method and then randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (two groups of 15 people). Kim Karad Visual Memory Test and Wechsler Memory Span Test were taken from the groups in pretest. The working memory rehabilitation was performed in 18 sessions (each sessions 60-minute) and after which the test was performed again. The data were analyzed by multivariate covariance test according to its assumptions. Results: The results showed that after the rehabilitation of working memory, in the experimental group, the mean of short, medium and long components of visual memory were 12.00, 10.8 and 12.33, respectively, and the direct and inverse of memory span were 11.66 and 9.66, respectively. In the control group, the average of short, medium and long components of visual memory is 7.00, 6.70 and 9.00, respectively, and direct and inverse of memory span is 8.33 and 6.46, respectively. The difference in the mean scores between the two groups in the components of visual memory and memory span after the intervention was significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results showed that working memory rehabilitation can improve visual memory and memory span, and it is recommended that this rehabilitation method be used to improve the cognitive functions of the elderly.

To assess the fall of risk among the elderly in selected urban area of Thrissur. Objectives a) To assess the fall risk among the elderly people in selected urban area of Kachery, Thrissur. b) To associate fall risk score with selected demographic variables. c) To correlate fall risk assessment questionnaire score and modified fall prevention checklist for personal risk factors score among elderly individuals. d) To teach the elderly people about fall prevention exercise. Methodology: Non-experimental descriptive research design is adopted in this study. We selected 60 samples through random sampling technique. Standardized fall risk assessment questionnaire built by national aging research institute and modified fall prevention checklist for personal risk factors built by Hamilton county was used to collect the data. Tool was administered by interview method for assessing fall risk. Fall preventive intervention module developed, validated and administered following data collection. The data collected were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: The demographic profile of elderly people shows that 46.66% belongs to age group between 60-70 years and most of them 58.33% were females. The majority 73.33% of elderly person are at low risk for fall and 26.66% are at high risk for fall in questionnaire and 81.67% of elderly are low risk for fall, 18.33% are risk and there is no elderly person high risk for fall in checklist. The overall fall risk is high among elderly individual alone in home and low in elderly in nuclear families. The risk for fall among elderly based on previous history of fall shows that elderly with visual impairment those who don’t have previous knowledge about fall prevention and elderly age between 91-100 is high risk for fall. The risk for fall based on ability to perform ADL in elderly shows those who living alone in the home high risk for fall. There is significant association between score with selected variables like age, previous knowledge about fall prevention, elderly residing in their home alone. We found that there is perfect positive correlation r=1 between fall risk assessment, questionnaires and checklist score. Discussion: At the end of the study the investigator found that the risk for fall based on the assessment of fall history among elderly people shows that, there is significant association between age (p=0.0273) that is, age group between 91-100 years are high risk for fall. Previous knowledge about fall prevention shows that, elderly without previous knowledge about fall prevention is at high risk for fall (p= 0.03074). In sensory impairment that is, elderly having visual impairment (p=0.998) having risk for fall. The risk for fall among elderly people based on their ability to perform activities of daily living shows that, elderly residing in their home alone shows more risk for fall.

BackgroundDepressive symptoms are associated with cognitive decline in elderly people, but the nature of their temporal relationship remains equivocal.AimsTo test whether depressive symptoms predict cognitive decline in elderly people with normal cognition.MethodThe Center for Epidemiologic Study depression scale (CES – D) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to evaluate depressive symptomatology and cognitive functioning, respectively. A sample of 1003 persons aged 59–71 years and with a MMSE score of 26 or over was selected. Cognitive decline was defined as a drop of at least 3 points on the MMSE at 4-year follow-up.ResultsBaseline high levels of depressive symptoms predicted a higher risk of cognitive decline at 4-year follow-up. The MMSE score of participants with depression was more likely to fall below 26 at 2-year follow-up and to remain below at 4-year follow-up than the MMSE score of those without depressive symptoms. Persistent but not episodic depressive episodes were associated with cognitive decline.ConclusionsHigh levels of depressive symptoms, when persistent, are associated with cognitive decline in a sample of elderly people.
