Top predators are disappearing worldwide, significantly changing ecosystems that depend on top-down regulation. Conflict with humans remains the primary roadblock for large carnivore conservation, but for the eastern wolf ( Canis lycaon ), disagreement over its evolutionary origins presents a significant barrier to conservation in Canada and has impeded protection for grey wolves ( Canis lupus ) in the USA. Here, we use 127 235 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified from restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) of wolves and coyotes, in combination with genomic simulations, to test hypotheses of hybrid origins of Canis types in eastern North America. A principal components analysis revealed no evidence to support eastern wolves, or any other Canis type, as the product of grey wolf × western coyote hybridization. In contrast, simulations that included eastern wolves as a distinct taxon clarified the hybrid origins of Great Lakes-boreal wolves and eastern coyotes. Our results support the eastern wolf as a distinct genomic cluster in North America and help resolve hybrid origins of Great Lakes wolves and eastern coyotes. The data provide timely information that will shed new light on the debate over wolf conservation in eastern North America.

From early 2012, a novel clone of vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium (assigned the multi locus sequence type ST796) was simultaneously isolated from geographically separate hospitals in south eastern Australia and New Zealand. Here we describe the complete genome sequence of Ef_aus0233, a representative ST796 E. faecium isolate. We used PacBio single molecule real-time sequencing to establish a high quality, fully assembled genome comprising a circular chromosome of 2,888,087 bp and five plasmids. Comparison of Ef_aus0233 to other E. faecium genomes shows Ef_aus0233 is a member of the epidemic hospital-adapted lineage and has evolved from an ST555-like ancestral progenitor by the accumulation or modification of five mosaic plasmids and five putative prophage, acquisition of two cryptic genomic islands, accrued chromosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms and a 80kb region of recombination, also gaining Tn1549 and Tn916, transposons conferring resistance to vancomycin and tetracycline respectively. The genomic dissection of this new clone presented here underscores the propensity of the hospital E. faecium lineage to change, presumably in response to the specialized conditions of hospital and healthcare environments.

The mating behaviors of Philodromus rufus-like spiders from the Pacific coast, northern Ontario, and southern Ontario near Belleville revealed two species and a subspecies. P. rufus Walckenaer is identified as a transcontinental species in which the males vibrate their legs in courtship and possess an "angular" retro-lateral apophysis on the palpal tibia. P. rufus vibrans Dondale is a small, heavily-speckled subspecies of rufus. The second species is P. exilis Banks, in which the males do not vibrate and have a "non-angular" apophysis, and which occurs in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence-Acadian forests of eastern North America.

The polypore Trametes gibbosa (Pers.) Fries, common in Europe and Asia, is reported from eastern North America for the first time. Single basidiospore cultures from Pennsylvania, United States, and Quebec, Canada, were paired with each other and with cultures from the Czech Republic. The North American intercollection crosses were 60% compatible and 100% compatible with the Czech cultures. All the crosses among the Czech cultures were 100% compatible. The recent introduction of T. gibbosa to North America is suggested as a possible explanation for the limited number of mating-type alleles and subsequent incompatibility among the North American cultures.

The proinflammatory response induced by Toll-Like receptors (TLR) is considered the host's first defense line. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) correspond to the most frequent type of variation in the human genome, and due to the importance of TLR2 in the immune response, SNPs in the TLR gene are related to susceptibility or resistance to various diseases. Thus, the objective of the present study was to identify the polymorphisms existing in the TLR2 gene that may cause susceptibility or protection against infectious diseases. We conducted a systematic review of the literature in the databases Science Direct, National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health of the USA (PUBMED), Cochrane Collaboration and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) between 2000 to 2020. The search resulted in 32 articles, all of which in English. Thus, it was demonstrated that the related polymorphisms are extremely important for the identification of related pathologies, whether for the susceptibility or protection of the individual to the diseases, also being essential for the mechanisms of signal generation and immune responses, and finally indicating that a balance between activation and inactivating these receptors to prevent an excessive inflammatory or immune response.

Fifteen species of Tricholoma, subgenus Tricholoma, section Albidogrisea, are described and illustrated. All species occur in the Great Lakes region and many are distributed elsewhere in eastern North America. Four species are new: Tricholoma argenteum, Tricholoma atrodiscum, Tricholoma insigne, and Tricholoma pullum. Keys are provided to the sections of subg. Tricholoma and to the species and stirpes of sect. Albidogrisea.
