In a paper recently published by Mr. Goodey it is definitely asserted that ciliates, amœbæ and flagellates cannot function as a factor limiting the numbers of bacteria in soils. It does not appear to me that this conclusion is justified by the experimental data given in this paper, and in view of the importance of the subject it seems desirable to bring together the main facts so far ascertained and to summarise the present position of the problem. Soil consists of irregular mineral particles of sizes varying from about 1 mm. diameter downwards, together with a smaller proportion of organic substances of varying degrees of complexity, nutrient and other salts, and the oxides of iron, aluminium, and silicon in a form easily soluble in acids or alkalis. The action of the natural processes tends on the whole to effect intermingling of these constituents, at any rate throughout the top 6 inches.

Human body is a complex of organic substances (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates), which undergo chemical decomposition processes soon after death. The compounds released during decomposition characterize the development of different stages of this process: e.g. biogenic amines resulted from the proteins decomposition will confer the particular smell of a cadaver, gases resulted from carbohydrates fermentation will give the bloating aspect of the cadaver. The study of cadaver decomposition and the products resulted from this process is the subject of human taphonomy and is realized nowadays in special facilities in USA and Australia. Identification and analysis of the chemical compounds emerged after human decomposition (gases, liquids, salts) give valuable information to forensic pathologists for estimating the postmortem interval (PMI). More, volatile compounds � which give the odor signature�specific to human remains � may be utilized in identifying clandestine burials, human remains or victims entrapped under ruins in cases of natural disasters. In this paper the authors describe the chemical decomposition stages of human cadavers, the factors influencing these processes and utility for the forensic activity of the results of human taphonomic studies.

I am delighted to have Dr. Jawetz again bring to the attention of your readers his definitive work on the subject of antimicrobial combinations. We certainly have no quarrel with the points he reiterates. Our choice of words, "It is not clear why these results are at variance with the experimental data of Jawetz or the clinical data of Lepper and Dowling," was probably unfortunate, for Dr. Jawetz points out why the results did differ from his experimental work.

<p>Regions with an expected low anthropogenic load are of particular interest for monitoring small gas components of the atmosphere. Under such conditions, the concentration of ozone is determined by natural processes. One of these regions is East Antarctica.</p><p>The experimental part of the research included:</p><p>- Complex of meteorological observations;</p><p>- Measurement of total ozone column (TOC) in the vertical column of the atmosphere;</p><p>- Monitoring of spectra, levels and doses of surface solar radiation;</p><p>The research was carried out in the areas where the Belarusian Antarctic expeditions were based: the stations “Mount Vechernaya” and “Progress”.</p><p>The measurements were carried out by a two-channel filter photometer PION-F and an ultraviolet spectroradiometer PION-UV, developed at the NOMREC. When determining the TOC values, the method was used, which consists in restoring the TOC values by analyzing the spectral distribution of the illumination density of the Earth's surface in the UV range. According to this method, the TOC values can be obtained using the ratio of illuminances at two wavelengths of the solar spectrum, one of which falls in the region of sufficiently strong absorption of atmospheric ozone, and the other is outside this region.</p><p>During the Belarusian Antarctic expeditions, a significant amount of experimental data was obtained (more than 100,000 spectra of energy illumination, more than 1,000 average daily values of TOC, etc.). The accumulated array of experimental data can be used to study theoretical problems and solve applied problems.</p><p>This paper presents a description of the dynamics of TOC in the atmosphere of East Antarctica during the period of seasonal expeditions 2014-2020.</p>

Methodology provided summarizes published, original and foreign theoretic and experimental data on the subject of heating and cooling of standard and shaped conductors of overhead power transmission line and uses those of them which are most affected to fundamental heat-transfer laws. Computation surface area of standard and shaped wire formulas are given. The common formula of convection heat transfer coefficient is provided, based on wind speed and direction, concerning antiicing mode. Parameters of this formula do not coincide with those existing, as they are based on experimental data on standard and shaped conductors but not on round tubes. Formula of computation of heat transfer power under the influence of solar radiation is given. Summarized formula of admissible continuous current computation is given, all the components have detailed description in the article.

Statistics today represent a group of scientific methods for the quantitative and qualitative investigation of variations in mass appearances. In fact, statistics present a group of methods that are used for the accumulation, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data necessary for reaching certain conclusions. Statistical analysis is divided into descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistics. The values which represent the results of an experiment, and which are the subject of observation of a certain occurrence, are called parameters and they are divided into descriptive and numerical. All numerical parameters are divided into non-continuous and continuous. The graphic presentation of the distribution of frequencies can be by poligon or histogram. The most frequently applied descriptive statistical methods are: arithmetic mean, standard deviation, standard error of arithmetic mean, variation coefficient, and variation interval.

The concepts of convolution and deconvolution are well known in the field of physical measurement. In particular, they are of interest in the field of metrology, since they can positively influence the performance of the measurement. Numerous mathematical models and computer developments dedicated to convolution and deconvolution have emerged, enabling a more efficient use of experimental data; this in sectors as different as biology, astronomy, manufacturing and energy industries. The subject finds today a new topicality because it has been made accessible to a large public for applications such as processing photographic images. The purpose of this paper is to take into account some recent evolutions such as the introduction of convolution methods in international test standards. Thus, its first part delivers a few reminders of some associated definitions. They concern linear systems properties, and integral transforms. If convolution, in most cases, does not create major calculation problems, deconvolution on the contrary is an inverse problem, and as such needs more attention. The principles of some of the methods available today are exposed. In the third part, illustrations are given on recent examples of applications, belonging to the domain of electrical energy networks and photographic enhancement.

The subject of this paper is the investigation of unsteady flow inside a transonic centrifugal compressor stage with a pipe-diffuser by utilizing unsteady 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations (unsteady 3D URANS). The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results obtained are compared with detailed experimental data gathered using various steady and unsteady measurement techniques. The basic phenomena and mechanisms of the complex and highly unsteady flow inside the compressor with a pipe-diffuser are presented and analyzed in detail.

No satisfactory definition of Dominium in Roman Law has yet been achieved. Amongst English writers Austin many years ago found great difficulty in this question while in modern times Professor Buckland has written ‘it is thus difficult to define Dominium precisely.’ Again, Poste, dealing with Gaius' discussion of dominium, says that his opening statements are ‘deplorably confused.’ These examples are enough to indicate the condition, of uncertainty which prevails. In my submission this uncertainty exists mainly because the conception of ususfructus has never yet been explained adequately. Of Possessio it has been said ‘the definition of Possessio to give the results outlined is a matter of great difficulty. No perfectly correct solution may be possible,’ and this statement is generally accepted as a correct assessment of the present position in juristic literature. But here, too, in my opinion, the reason is again connected with usufruct, for the possessio of the usufructuary has not yet been adequately determined. Gaius (2.93) tells us ‘usufructuarius vero usucapere non potest; primuum quod non possidet, sed habet ius utendi et fruendi.’ Ulpian holds that he had possessio in fact (‘Naturaliter videtur possidere is qui usum fructum habet’ D.41.2.12). On this subject Roby says ‘the fructuary was not strictly a possessor and therefore if he was deprived from enjoying he had not a claim to the original interdict de vi but in virtue of his quasi-possessio a special interdict was granted him.’ Austin saw difficulty in the whole problem of possessio. He wrote ‘by Savigny in his treatise on possessio it is remarked that the possessio of a right of usufruct … resembles the possessio of a thing, by the proprietor, or by an adverse possessor exercising rights of property over the thing. And that a disturbance of the one possession resembles the disturbance of the other. Now this must happen for the reason I have already stated:—namely, that the right of usufruct or user, like that of property, is indefinite in point of user. For what is possession (meaning legal possession not mere physical handling of the subject) but the exercise of a right ?’
