A Gram-reaction-positive, non-motile actinobacterium, designated strain 210121T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of the mangrove fern Acrostichum speciosum. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Asanoa. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain 210121T and the type strains of the three recognized species of the genus Asanoa were below the 70 % threshold recommended for distinguishing bacterial genomic species. The novel isolate contained glutamic acid, glycine, alanine and meso-A2pm as cell-wall amino acids, indicating peptidoglycan type A1γ. The characteristic whole-cell sugars were xylose, ribose, glucose and mannose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 (30.9 %), C17 : 0 (23.0 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (14.9 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (12.3 %). The phospholipid profile comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and phospholipids of unknown structure containing glucosamine. The G+C content of the DNA was 70.3 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic data, strain 210121T ( = CGMCC 4.5593T  = DSM 45427T) represents a novel species of the genus Asanoa, for which the name Asanoa hainanensis sp. nov., is proposed. An emended description of the genus Asanoa is also proposed.

Strain 211018T was isolated from mangrove Excocaria agallocha rhizosphere soil. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the highest similarity to the type strains of Micromonospora olivasterospora DSM 43868T (98.6 %) and Micromonospora pattaloongensis TJ2-2T (98.4 %). gyrB gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain 211018T should be assigned to the genus Micromonospora. The characteristic whole-cell sugars are xylose, mannose and arabinose. The predominant menaquinone is MK-9(H4) and the major fatty acids are iso-C15 : 0 (27.5 %), 10-methyl C17 : 0 (14.2 %), C17 : 1 ω8c (12.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 (12.6 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (6.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 (4.1 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (4.0 %). The phospholipid profile comprises phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The DNA G+C content is 70.8 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data of the strain coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora. Furthermore, a combination of DNA–DNA hybridization results and some physiological and biochemical properties indicated that the novel strain could be readily distinguished from the closest phylogenetic relatives. On the basis of these phenotypic and genotypic data, strain 211018T represents a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the name Micromonospora rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 211018T (=CGMCC 4.5599T =DSM 45431T).

A cholesterol side-chain-cleaving bacterial strain, AD-6T, was isolated from fresh faeces of a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) and was studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the novel strain formed a distinct subline within the genus Gordonia, its closest neighbours being the type strains of Gordonia cholesterolivorans, Gordonia sihwensis and Gordonia hydrophobica, with sequence similarity values of 98.2, 97.8 and 97.6 %, respectively. The gyrB gene sequence of strain AD-6T exhibited similarities of 77–91 % with those of the type strains of recognized species of the genus Gordonia, being most similar to the type strains of G. sihwensis, G. hydrophobica and Gordonia hirsuta (91, 87 and 84 % similarity, respectively). The results of whole-cell fatty acid analyses and DNA–DNA relatedness data readily distinguished the new isolate from its nearest neighbours. Strain AD-6T is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Gordonia, for which the name Gordonia neofelifaecis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AD-6T (=NRRL B-59395T=CCTCC AB-209144T).

A soil isolate, strain CC-AB07T, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. This organism had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Gordonia. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the novel strain formed a monophyletic branch at the periphery of the evolutionary radiation occupied by the genus Gordonia, its closest neighbours being the type strains of Gordonia alkanivorans, Gordonia amicalis, Gordonia bronchialis, Gordonia desulfuricans, Gordonia polyisoprenivorans and Gordonia rhizosphera. The novel isolate was distinguished from all of these type strains using a range of phenotypic properties and by gyrB gene sequence analysis. It was evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain CC-AB07T should be classified as representing a novel species in the genus Gordonia, for which the name Gordonia soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-AB07T (=BCRC 16810T=DSM 44995T).

The taxonomic relationship of Lentzea atacamensis and Lentzea deserti were re-evaluated using comparative genome analysis. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the type strains of L. atacamensis and L. deserti shared 99.7% sequence similarity. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between the genomes of two type strains were 88.6% and 98.8%, respectively, greater than the two recognized thresholds values of 70% dDDH and 95–96% ANI for bacterial species delineation. These results suggested that L. atacamensis and L. deserti should share the same taxonomic position. And this conclusion was further supported by similar phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features between them. Therefore, we propose that L. deserti is a later heterotypic synonym of L. atacamensis.

Three Gram-stain-positive strains were isolated from fermented mustard and were rod-shaped, non-motile, asporogenous, facultatively anaerobic, homofermentative and did not exhibit catalase activity. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strains were members of the genus Lactobacillus. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the type strains of Lactobacillus crustorum (98.7 % similarity), Lactobacillus farciminis (98.9 %) and Lactobacillus mindensis (97.9 %) were the closest neighbours. However, DNA–DNA reassociation values with these strains were less than 50 %. Phenotypic and genotypic features demonstrated that these isolates represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus futsaii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is YM 0097T ( = JCM 17355T = BCRC 80278T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, catalase- and oxidase-positive strain, designated MS7T, was isolated from freshwater of a river near Trabzon, Turkey. Its taxonomy was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The strain grew optimally at 28 °C and pH 7.5 and in the presence of 2.0 % NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strain belonged to the genus Algoriphagus; strain MS7T showed highest sequence similarity to the type strains of Algoriphagus alkaliphilus (97.3 %), Algoriphagus terrigena (96.8 %), Algoriphagus jejuensis (96.2 %), Algoriphagus boritolerans (96.1 %) and Algoriphagus aquatilis (95.8 %). The major fatty acids of strain MS7T were iso-C15 : 0 (30.14 %) and summed future 9 (10-methyl C16 : 0 and/or iso-C17 : 1 ω9c 18.75 %). Polar lipid analysis revealed phosphatidylethanolamine, a variety of unidentified lipids, an unidentified aminophospholipid, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified aminolipid. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7.The DNA G+C content of MS7T was 41.6 mol%, a value consistent with that of members of the genus Algoriphagus. The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain MS7T and A. alkaliphilus LMG 22694T was 41 %, which is clearly below the 70 % threshold accepted for species delineation. Thus, our results support the placement of strain MS7T within a separate and previously unrecognized species. On the basis of these data, the strain is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Algoriphagus, for which the name Algoriphagus trabzonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MS7T ( = NCCB 100372T = LMG 26290T). An emended description of A. alkaliphilus is also provided.

A xylanolytic and phosphate-solubilizing bacterium isolated from sawdust of Ulmus nigra in Salamanca was characterized by a polyphasic approach. The novel strain, designated XIL02T, was Gram-positive, aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-negative, rod-shaped and non-motile. Phylogenetically and chemotaxonomically, it was related to members of the genus Microbacterium. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, it is closely related to Microbacterium arborescens and Microbacterium imperiale; however, DNA–DNA hybridization showed reassociation values less than 70 % with the type strains of these species. In chemotaxonomic analyses, the major menaquinones detected were MK-12, MK-13 and MK-11 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0; the peptidoglycan was of the type B2β. The G+C content determined was 69 mol%. Based on the present data, it is proposed that strain XIL02T (=LMG 20991T=CECT 5976T) be classified as the type strain of a novel Microbacterium species, for which the name Microbacterium ulmi sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel betaproteobacterium, designated strain Ch07T, was isolated from granules from the wastewater-treatment bioreactor of an alcohol fermentation factory in South Korea. In order to determine its taxonomic position, the novel strain was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The new strain was Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, motile and short rod-shaped. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain Ch07T belonged to the class Betaproteobacteria, being related to Pusillimonas noertemannii BN9T (gene sequence similarity 97.30 %), Achromobacter xylosoxidans subsp. xylosoxidans DSM 10346T (97.09 %), Bordetella pertussis DSM 5571T (97.01 %), Pigmentiphaga kullae DSM 13608T (96.68 %) and Castellaniella defragrans DSM 1214T (96.47 %). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization tests showed that reassociation values were less than 62 % with respect to these closely related type strains. Chemotaxonomic data showed that strain Ch07T possessed ubiquinone Q-8. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.9±0.1 mol%. The major polyamine of strain Ch07T was putrescine. The major polar lipids of strain Ch07T were phosphatidylethanolamine, followed by diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. When strain Ch07T was incubated on tryptic soy agar, the major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/iso C15 : 0 2-OH) and summed feature 5 (C18 : 1 ω7c/ω9t/ω12t). The results of DNA–DNA hybridizations, in combination with the chemotaxonomic and physiological data, demonstrated that strain Ch07T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Parapusillimonas granuli gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is Ch07T (=KCTC 12668T=LMG 24012T).

A taxonomic study of a novel marine, heterotrophic, non-gliding, halotolerant and light-pink-pigmented bacterium was carried out using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain KMM 6241T is a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strain KMM 6241T formed a cluster with the genera Algoriphagus, Chimaereicella and Hongiella with sequence similarities of 94.0–98.2 %. Hongiella ornithinivorans was the closest relative of the novel isolate. Comparative analysis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic characteristics of strain KMM 6241T and representatives of the genera Algoriphagus, Chimaereicella and Hongiella revealed many similar features. Consequently, phylogenetic evidence supported by phenotypic and genotypic similarities support the transfer of members of the genera Chimaereicella and Hongiella to the genus Algoriphagus and the establishment of a novel species, Algoriphagus vanfongensis sp. nov., with strain KMM 6241T (=DSM 17529T=KCTC 12716T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile and pink bacterial strain, designated strain GCM0142T, was isolated from the confined seawater in the Saemangeum Tide Embankment of South Korea, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain GCM0142T indicated that the isolate belonged to the phylum Bacteroidetes and exhibited similarity levels of 94.0–96.4 % to the type strains of recognized Pontibacter species. Strain GCM0142T was oxidase- and catalase-positive. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were summed feature 4 (comprising iso-C17 : 1I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1B, 36.8 %), iso-C15 : 0 (22.3 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c, 6.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain GCM0142T was 48.9 mol% and the major quinone was MK-7. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown aminolipids (AL1–2), an unknown aminophospholipid, five unknown lipids (L1–5) and an unknown glycolipid. On the basis of the evidence presented, strain GCM0142T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pontibacter , for which the name Pontibacter saemangeumensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GCM0142T ( = KACC 16448T = JCM 17926T).
