A strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped actinomycete strain, named JC2055T, was isolated from a sediment sample of getbol, the tidal flat of Korea. 16S rDNA analysis revealed that the getbol isolate belonged to the genus Nocardioides with the highest sequence similarity to Nocardioides aquiterrae GW-9T (95·5 %). The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4) and the predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-16 : 0 and 17 : 1ω8c. Tuberculostearic acid was absent. The G+C content of DNA was 72 mol%. Based on the morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomical data presented in this study, strain JC2055T can be readily differentiated from other validly named Nocardioides species. The name Nocardioides ganghwensis sp. nov. is proposed for the isolate. The type strain is JC2055T (=IMSNU 14028T=KCTC 9920T=JCM 12124T).

A strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped actinomycete, designated strain JC2056T, was isolated from a sediment sample of getbol, the tidal flat of Korea. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Nocardioides, with the highest similarity being to Nocardioides luteus KCTC 9575T (95·7 %). The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4), and predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-16 : 0 and iso-16 : 1 H. The DNA G+C content was 70 mol%. Based on the morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomical data presented in this study, strain JC2056T should be classified as a novel species, for which the name Nocardioides aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JC2056T (=IMSNU 14029T=KCTC 9921T=JCM 12125T).

An actinomycete strain (0345M-7T) was isolated from a soil sample from Yilan county, Taiwan. The isolate displayed substrate mycelia, upon which were borne short spore chains. The spore chains were composed of non-motile, smooth-surfaced, oval spores. Strain 0345M-7T had meso-diaminopimelic acid in its peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, arabinose and ribose. The only phospholipid found was phosphatidylethanolamine. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 (38.1 %) and C17 : 1 (25.4 %). The DNA G+C content of strain 0345M-7T was 68.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, it is proposed that strain 0345M-7T (=BCRC 16802T=KCTC 19116T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, Amycolatopsis taiwanensis sp. nov.

Two Gram-positive, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria (strains RHLT1-17T and RHLT2-1T) were isolated from Hailuogou glacier in Szechwan province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strains belonged to the genus Nocardioides and shared 97.8 % sequence similarity with each other and 97.6 and 98.4 % sequence similarity, respectively, with Nocardioides kribbensis KSL-2T. Strain RHLT1-17T grew at 0–35 °C and strain RHLT2-1T grew at 0–25 °C. The major cellular fatty acids of strain RHLT1-17T were C17 : 1ω8c (32.69 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (21.74 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain RHLT2-1T were C18 : 1ω9c (28.72 %), summed feature 3 (17.14 %; comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C16 : 0 (14.35 %), C16 : 0 (9.96 %) and iso-C14 : 0 (8.34 %). Both strains contained ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan and MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone. On the basis of data obtained using a polyphasic approach, two novel species, Nocardioides szechwanensis sp. nov. (type strain RHLT1-17T  = CGMCC 1.11147T  = NBRC 108562T) and Nocardioides psychrotolerans sp. nov. (type strain RHLT2-1T  = CGMCC 1.11156T  = NBRC 108563T), are proposed.

Abstract Two novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, circular, convex, light-pink and white-coloured bacterial strains BT291T and BT350T were isolated from soil collected in Uijeongbu city (37° 44′ 55″ N, 127° 2′ 20″ E) and Jeju island (33° 22′ 48″ N, 126° 31′ 48″ E), respectively, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains BT291T and BT350T belong to a distinct lineage within the genus Microvirga (family Methylobacteriaceae, order Rhizobiales, class Alpha Proteobacteria, phylum Proteobacteria, kingdom Bacteria). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two strains BT291T and BT350T was 97.4 %. The two strains were found to have the same quinone system, with Q-10 as the major respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids of strains BT291T and BT350T were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), diphosphatydilglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). The major cellular fatty acids of strain BT291T were C18:1 ω7c (58.2 %) and cyclo-C19:0 ω8c (25.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain BT350T were C18:1 ω7c (38.5 %) and cyclo-C19:0 ω8c (27.7 %). Based on the polyphasic analysis (phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and biochemical), strains BT291T and BT350T can be suggested as two novel bacterial species within the genus Microvirga and the proposed names are Microvirga amygdalina and Microvirga alba, respectively. The type strain of Microvirga amygdalina is BT291T (= KCTC 72368T = NBRC 114845T) and the type strain of Microvirga alba is BT350T (= KCTC 72385T = NBRC 114848T).

An actinobacterial strain containing demethylmenaquinone DMK-9(H4) as the diagnostic isoprenoid quinone was isolated from a tidal flat sediment sample, from South Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JC2054T represents a distinct phyletic line within the suborder Micrococcineae of the order Actinomycetales. The closest phylogenetic neighbour was Cellulomonas fermentans, with 94.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The novel isolate was strictly aerobic and slightly halophilic, with optimum growth occurring in 2–4 % (w/v) NaCl. Cells were non-motile, non-sporulating and rod-shaped. The peptidoglycan type was of the A-type of cross-linkage. l-ornithine was the diamino acid and d-glutamate represented the N-terminus of the interpeptide bridge. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-branched and straight-chain fatty acids. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unknown phospholipid. The menaquinone composition of C. fermentans was determined to be MK-10(H4), MK-9(H4) and MK-8(H4) in the ratio 56 : 2 : 1. On the basis of the polyphasic evidence presented in this study, it is proposed that strain JC2054T should be classified as representing a novel genus and species of the suborder Micrococcineae, with the name Demequina aestuarii gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is JC2054T (=IMSNU 14027T=KCTC 9919T=JCM 12123T). In addition, it was clear from the phylogenetic analysis and chemotaxonomic data that C. fermentans does not belong to the genus Cellulomonas or any other recognized genera. Therefore, C. fermentans should be reclassified as representing a novel genus, for which the name Actinotalea fermentans gen. nov., comb. nov. is proposed, with strain DSM 3133T (=ATCC 43279T=CFBP 4259T=CIP 103003T=NBRC 15517T=JCM 9966T=LMG 16154T) as the type strain.

AbstractAn obligately anaerobic, non-motile, Gram-positive coccobacillus strain SW451 was isolated from pooled cecum contents of feral chickens. Comparative analysis based on 16s rRNA sequence showed that strain SW451 had 95.24% nucleotide sequence similarity to Sellimonas intestinalis BR31T, the closest species with a valid taxonomy. The genome of SW451 is 2.67 Mbp with 45.23 mol% of G+C content. The major cellular fatty acids were C16: 0, C14: 0 and C16: 0 DMA. Based on taxonogenomic, physiological, and biochemical analysis, the strain SW451 represents a new species of the genus Sellimonas, for which the name Sellimonas caecigallum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Sellimonas caecigallum is SW451 (=DSM 109473T)

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic and pleomorphic bacterium, designated BS-W13T, was isolated from a tidal flat on the South Sea, South Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain BS-W13T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 1.0–2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Neighbour-joining and maximum-parsimony phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BS-W13T clustered with the type strain of Seohaeicola saemankumensis , showing the highest sequence similarity (95.96 %) to this strain. Strain BS-W13T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.95, 95.91, 95.72 and 95.68 % to the type strains of Sulfitobacter donghicola , Sulfitobacter porphyrae , Sulfitobacter mediterraneus and Roseobacter litoralis , respectively. Strain BS-W13T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The polar lipid profile of strain BS-W13T, containing phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified lipid as major components, was distinguishable from those of some phylogenetically related taxa. The DNA G+C content of strain BS-W13T was 58.1 mol%. The phylogenetic data and differential chemotaxonomic and other phenotypic properties revealed that strain BS-W13T constitutes a novel genus and species within family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria , for which the name Pseudoseohaeicola caenipelagi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BS-W13T ( = KCTC 42349T = CECT 8724T).

Three Gram-variable, rod-shaped bacterial strains, TF-16T, TF-19 and TF-80T, were isolated from a tidal flat of Daepo Beach (Yellow Sea) near Mokpo City, Korea, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. These isolates grew optimally in the presence of 2 % NaCl and at 30 °C. Their peptidoglycan types were based on l-Lys–Gly. The predominant menaquinone detected in the three strains was MK-7. The three strains contained large amounts of the branched fatty acids iso-C17 : 0, anteiso-C13 : 0, iso-C13 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C contents of strains TF-16T, TF-19 and TF-80T were 48·6, 48·4 and 48·0 mol%, respectively. The three strains formed a coherent cluster with Exiguobacterium species in a phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. They showed closest phylogenetic affiliation to Exiguobacterium aurantiacum, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 98·1–98·3 %. The three strains exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 94·0–94·6 % to the type strains of other Exiguobacterium species. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness indicated that strains TF-16T and TF-19 and strain TF-80T are members of two species that are separate from E. aurantiacum. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strains TF-16T and TF-19 and strain TF-80T represent two novel species in the genus Exiguobacterium; the names Exiguobacterium aestuarii sp. nov. (type strain TF-16T=KCTC 19035T=DSM 16306T; reference strain TF-19) and Exiguobacterium marinum sp. nov. (type strain TF-80T=KCTC 19036T=DSM 16307T) are proposed.

Three novel endophytic strains, designated 17B10-2-12T, 26C10-4-4 and D13-10-4-9, were isolated from the bark of Populus euramericana in Heze, Shandong Province, China. They were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, short-rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the three novel strains clustered with members of the family Comamonadaceae and formed a distinct branch. The isolates shared 100 % similarities among themselves and had the highest sequence similarity with Xenophilus azovorans DSM 13620T (95.2 %) and Xenophilus arseniciresistens YW8T (95.0 %), and less than 95.0 % sequence similarities with members of other species. Their major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C18 : 1ω7c and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown aminophospholipids. The predominant quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 69.5–70.0 mol%. Based on data from a polyphasic taxonomy study, the three strains represent a novel species of a novel genus of the family Comamonadaceae, for which the name Corticibacter populi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17B10-2-12T ( = CFCC 12099T = KCTC 42091T).

A Gram-negative, motile, strictly aerobic, violet-pigment-producing bacterium, designated strain FR1199T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Byunsan, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain FR1199T represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Pseudoalteromonas. The phenotypic features of strain FR1199T were similar to those of Pseudoalteromonas phenolica and Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea, but several physiological and chemotaxonomical properties readily distinguished strain FR1199T from these species. Major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0) and monounsaturated C18 : 1 ω7c fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 39 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is concluded that the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Pseudoalteromonas, for which the name Pseudoalteromonas byunsanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FR1199T (=JCM 12483T=KCTC 12274T).
