AbstractThe γ isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), also known as lindane, is a carcinogenic persistent organic pollutant. Lindane was used worldwide as an agricultural insecticide. Legacy soil and groundwater contamination with lindane and other HCH isomers is still a big concern. The biotic reductive dechlorination of HCH to non-desirable and toxic lower chlorinated compounds such as monochlorobenzene (MCB) and benzene, among others, has been broadly documented. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that complete biotransformation of lindane to non-toxic end products is attainable using a sequential treatment approach with three mixed anaerobic microbial cultures referred to as culture I, II, and III. Biaugmentation with culture I achieved dechlorination of lindane to MCB and benzene. Culture II was able to dechlorinate MCB to benzene, and finally, culture III carried out methanogenic benzene degradation. Distinct Dehalobacter populations, corresponding to different 16S rRNA amplicon sequence variants in culture I and culture II, were responsible for lindane and MCB dechlorination, respectively. This study continues to highlight key roles of Dehalobacter spp. as chlorobenzene- and HCH-organohalide-respiring bacteria and demonstrates that sequential treatment with specialized anaerobic cultures may be explored at field sites in order to address legacy soil and groundwater contamination with HCH.

Aim: The aim of this report is to describe the management of a prosthodontic patient expressing unrealistic expectations with respect to the transition to edentulousness. Objectives: To outline (1) the diagnosis and explicit expectations of the patient on presentation (2) considerations made during treatment planning to address the wishes of the first time prosthodontic patient (3) a sequential treatment plan utilizing transitional partial removable dentures to manage the change to edentulousness (4) functional and aesthetic result achieved. Results: Delivery of immediate removable partial dentures retaining key abutment teeth in upper and lower arches was a viable prosthodontic solution in the transition to edentulousness of a patient expecting unrealistic treatment outcomes. Conclusions: Addressing impractical expectations and devising a treatment plan amenable to both clinician and patient is difficult. Strategies to manage these wishes in prosthodontic dentistry can include transitional partial dentures. Clinical relevance: Practitioners who encounter similar situations may consider this report valuable.

A 66-year-old woman presented to the hospital with cutaneous necrosis of her right ankle and foot. Her symptoms began immediately after an intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid for ankle osteoarthritis, which was performed 6 days before. Histopathology showed an intra-vascular hyaluronic acid embolus. The initial treatment approach was conservative, but the patient’s clinical state degraded. She was thus treated with sub-cutaneous hyaluronidase, the enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid, which yielded a moderate improvement even though it was administered 22 days after the initial hyaluronic acid injection. Although hyaluronic acid embolism and subsequent cutaneous necrosis are well-known complications of dermal fillers, there are few reported cases of embolism following intra-articular injection. To our knowledge, this is the first time hyaluronidase has been used in this setting.

Cardiac myocytes produce nitric oxide (NO). We studied the effects of intense exercise on the expression of NO synthase (NOS) and the tissue level of nitrite (NO2 −)/nitrate (NO3 −) (i.e., NOx), which are stable end products of NO in the heart. Rats ran on a treadmill for 45 min. Immediately after this exercise, the heart was quickly removed. Control rats remained at rest during the same 45-min period. The mRNA level of endothelial NOS (eNOS) in the heart was markedly lower in the exercised rats than in the control rats. Western blot analysis confirmed downregulation of eNOS protein in the heart after exercise. Tissue NOx level in the heart was significantly lower in the exercised rats than in the control rats. The present study revealed for the first time that production of NO in the heart is decreased by intense exercise. Because NO attenuates positive inotropic and chronotropic responses to β1-adrenergic stimulation in the heart, the decrease in cardiac production of NO by intense exercise may contribute to the acceleration of increase in myocardial contractility and heart rate during intense exercise.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a persistent organic pollutant and poses great threat on ecosystem and human health. In order to investigate the degradation law of HCB, a RuO2/Ti material was used as the anode, meanwhile, zinc, stainless steel, graphite, and RuO2/Ti were used as the cathode, respectively. The gas chromatography (GC) was used to analyze the electrochemical products of HCB on different cathodes. The results showed that the cathode materials significantly affected the dechlorination efficiency of HCB, and the degradation of HCB was reductive dechlorination which occurred only on the cathode. During the reductive process, chlorine atoms were replaced one by one on various intermediates such as pentachlorobenzene, tetrachlorobenzene, and trichlorobenzene occurred; the trichlorobenzene was obtained when zinc was used as cathode. The rapid dechlorination of HCB suggested that the electrochemical method using zinc or stainless steel as cathode could be used for remediation of polychlorinated aromatic compounds in the environment. The dechlorination approach of HCB by stainless steel cathode could be proposed.

Aniline is a toxic organic pollutant that is abundantly present in the environment. One of approaches to remove the aniline is by adsorption process. In this study, mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) was proposed for the first time to be a potential adsorbent for aniline. The adsorption studies were carried out at room temperature on the aniline solution with various initial concentrations for both bulk carbon nitride (BCN) and MCN. Owing to its larger surface area, the MCN showed much higher adsorption capacity towards aniline compared to the BCN. This result indicated that adsorbent with large surface area is very crucial in the adsorption of aniline. Comparison study was also carried out using mesoporous silica, MCM-41, which was reported to act as a good adsorbent for aniline. The adsorption capability of MCN was found to be higher than that of MCM-41. It was suggested that the MCN with larger pore diameter might have more suitable and favourable adsorption sites for aniline compared to MCM-41. This study obviously showed that MCN would be a new potential adsorbent for removal of aniline.

In this descriptive study, two treatment approaches designed to help women with gestational diabetes manage their pregnancies were compared: a hospital, outpatient-based, nursing intervention and the traditional, office-based care provided by obstetricians. A research model was constructed using three variables suggested by the literature: input variables (risk factors prior to gestation), moderating variables (conditions that occur during pregnancy), and outcome variables (normal vs abnormal outcomes for mother and infant). This research model was used to contrast the two treatment approaches. The principal statistical procedure employed was logistic regression, a backward elimination method where the dependent variable is expressed as an odds ratio. Neither treatment approach significantly reduced the risk of abnormal outcomes for mother or infant. First-time mothers, patients with gestational diabetes on medications, and patients with gestational diabetes experiencing complications during pregnancy had a significantly greater risk of having an infant with one or more abnormal outcomes.
