Ferroelasticity and phase transformation in Rb2Hg(CN)4 spinel

The low-temperature form of Rb2Hg(CN)4 [space group R\bar 3c, Z = 12, a 1 = 9.076, a 3 = 46.050 Å (273 K)] possesses a slightly distorted spinel structure with parameters similar to those of cubic cyanospinels. It transforms into a cubic spinel modification at ca 398 K (a = 13.140 Å at 399 K). Below the transition temperature the crystals exhibit ferroelastic properties, which allow the switching of the distortion directions into any one of four equivalent states. The critical stress is less than 1 x 10-3 kp mm-2. The resulting deformations do not exceed 2 x 10-2. Larger twinned crystals return to their primary state after the release of stress. They behave like extremely soft elastic springs. The crystals belong to the ferroelastic Aizu species m3m F\bar 3m. The transition shows a constant hysteresis of ca 12 K in all crystals investigated. The pressure derivatives of the upper and lower transition temperatures are observed to be almost equal and constant over a wide temperature range (dT/dP ≈ O. 245 K bar-l). The observed enthalpy of transformation is 1.03 J g-1 in fair agreement with the prediction of the Clapeyron-Clausius relation. Crystals of K2Hg(CN)4 exhibit similar properties; their transition temperature, hysteresis, enthalpy of transformation, and dT/dP are considerably less.

Experiments have been carried out on the 3 MeV electron microscope in Toulouse. The low temperature straining holder has been previously described Images given by an image intensifier are recorded on magnetic tape.The microtensile niobium samples are cut in a plane with the two operative slip directions [111] and lying in the foil plane. The tensile axis is near [011].Our results concern:- The transition temperature of niobium near 220 K: at this temperature and below an increasing difference appears between the mobilities of the screw and edge portions of dislocations loops. Source operation and interactions between screw dislocations of different slip system have been recorded.

AbstractIn this paper, size-induced ferroelectricit yweakening, phase transformation, and anomalous lattice expansion are observed in nanocrystalline BaTiO3 (nc-BaTiO3) deriv ed b y low temperature hydrothermal methods, and they are w ellunderstood using the terms of the long-range interaction and its cooperative phenomena altered by particle size in covalen t ionic nanocrystals. In cubic nc-BaTiO3, five modes centerd at 186, 254, 308, 512 and 716 cm-1 are observed Raman active in cubic nanophase, and they are attributed to local rhombohedral distortion breaking inversion-symmetry in cubic nanophase. The254 and 308 cm-1 modes are significantly affected not only by the concentration of hydroxyl defects, but also their particular configuration. And the 806 cm-1 modes found to be closely associated with OH - absorbed on grain boundaries.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) containing 0.25% Al2O3, which is resistant to low temperature degradation (LTD), was aged for 10 h at 130–220 °C in air. The aged specimens were subsequently indented at loads ranging from 9.8 to 490 N using a Vickers indenter. The influence of preaging temperature on the biaxial strength of the specimens was investigated to elucidate the relationship between the extent of LTD and the strength of zirconia restorations that underwent LTD. The indented strength of the specimens increased as the preaging temperature was increased higher than 160 °C, which was accompanied by extensive t-ZrO2 (t) to m-ZrO2 (m) and c-ZrO2 (c) to r-ZrO2 (r) phase transformations. The influence of preaging temperature on the indented strength was rationalized by the residual stresses raised by the t→m transformation and the reversal of tensile residual stress on the aged specimen surface due to the indentation. The results suggested that the longevity of restorations would not be deteriorated if the aged restorations retain compressive residual stress on the surface, which corresponds to the extent of t→m phase transformation less than 52% in ambient environment.

The coordination complex [Ni(en)3]2+(NO{}_{3}^{- })2(en = 1,2-diaminoethane) undergoes a sharp reversible displacive phase transition at ∼109 K, changing space group fromP6322 above the transition temperature toP6522 below. The phase change is accompanied by a tripling of thecaxis on cooling, resulting in an easy detection of the transition in images from area-detector diffractometers. The transition has been followed using a Nonius KappaCCD and a Bruker SMART APEX CCD. Data sets were collected over the temperature range 100–113 K and integrated using the low-temperature orientation matrix. Reflections withl≠ 3nshow a smooth and rapid decrease in intensity to zero on warming from 106.5 to 111 K. The results are reproducible to within ±2 K in two laboratories and suggest that this compound may be useful as a liquid-nitrogen cryo-calibrant for diffraction instruments equipped with area detectors.

The objective of the present article is to study the influence of TiB2 addition on the transformation behavior of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP). A range of TZP(Y)–TiB2 composites with different zirconia starting powder grades and TiB2 phase contents (up to 50 vol%) were processed by the hot-pressing route. Thermal expansion data, as obtained by thermo-mechanical analysis were used to assess the ZrO2 phase transformation in the composites. The thermal expansion hysteresis of the transformable ceramics provides information concerning the transformation behavior in the temperature range of the martensitic transformation and the low-temperature degradation. Furthermore, the transformation behavior and susceptibility to low-temperature degradation during thermal cycling were characterized in terms of the overall amount and distribution of the yttria stabilizer, zirconia grain size, possible dissolution of TiB2 phase, and the amount of residual stress generated in the Y-TZP matrix due to the addition of titanium diboride particles. For the first time, it is demonstrated in the present work that the thermally induced phase transformation of tetragonal zirconia in the Y-TZP composites can be controlled by the intentional addition of the monoclinic zirconia particles into the 3Y-TZP matrix.

Temperature-field and orientational magnetization dependences of single crystals were measured. Both samples demonstrate significant field-depending temperature hysteresis and low-temperature counter field magnetization. The correlation of orientational dependences of these effects and magnetic anisotropy is analyzed; the role of spin-lattice interactions is discussed.

Low-temperature X-ray crystal structures were determined on a range of derivatives of 4-thiacyclohexanol 5a of varying electron demand with a view to finding evidence for a through-bond interaction between the sulfur lone pair and the oxygenated substituent. In contrast to earlier suggestions, plots of C–OR bond distance versus pKa (ROH) showed that any interaction between the sulfur and the OR group is unlikely to be of a through-bond origin. Furthermore, unimolecular solvolysis rate measurements on the nosylate ester derivative 5g showed that the sulfur actually retards the reaction slightly in comparison with the corresponding sulfur-free analogue 6.
