Purpose There is an existing relationship among shareholders, boards of directors and management of companies. Corporate governance practices of companies are expected to ensure that this relationship maximises the wealth of shareholders. Differences exist among corporate governance of companies listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. Companies, for purposes of liquidity, hold cash, but cash holdings also add to the cost of financing, according to working capital theories. The study, thus, sought to examine the relationship between corporate governance practices, ownership structure, cash holdings and firm value. Design/methodology/approach The study deployed the seemingly unrelated regression to reduce the problem of multicollinearity resulting from the strong relationship between cash reserves and some control variables. Findings The study found no significant relationship between board size and firm value. Similar findings were also made on the relationship between proportion of non-executive directors on the board and firm value. However, firms audited by the big four audit firms are valued higher by the capital market. Cash holdings of firms negatively affect performance, and this is statistically significant. A positive relationship arises between a firm’s cash holdings and its value as a result of debt financing, even though this is not significant. Originality/value The study is the first of its kind that deploys Tobin’s Q as a measure of firms’ value to reflect investors’ valuation of firms in Ghana. The study is also the first of its kind to test the interactive effect of debt financing and cash holdings on firm value in Ghana.

Much effort has been expended by the regulators in Jordan to enhance the code of corporate governance (CG); however, the effectiveness of CG mechanisms in monitoring management and enhancing the value of a firm is still a puzzle. This study aims to investigate the impact of CG and cash holdings (CH) on firm value as measured by the market-to-book ratio. The sample consists of all manufacturing firms listed on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) over the years 2010–2017. The study hypotheses were tested using panel regression analysis. The research findings suggest that CH have a positive association with firm value, supporting the transaction and precautionary motives for holding cash. An interesting finding is that board expertise was found to be negatively associated with firm value. Gender diversity was found to be positively related to firm value, while board size, independence, and frequency of meetings were found to be insignificant. It seems that firms in Jordan regard strong CG mechanisms to be expensive and of little value in mitigating the negative effects of a weak legal system. These findings shed new light on the influence (or the lack of it) of boards in Jordanian firms. Consequently, the study recommends that the regulatory agencies in Jordan should consider improving governance codes and Rules to increase the effectiveness of the board and governance in general.

This paper presents evidence on cash holdings for Japanese firms listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, focusing on the impact of corporate governance factors in cash holdings and the implication of cash holdings to firm value. We find that insider ownership and bank relations of firms play a significant role in determining cash holdings. Our results indicate that foreign stockholders select profitable firms to invest, and these firms have higher levels of cash. We document evidence that cash holdings lead to agency problems and impact firm value negatively, and governance characteristics affect the negative relation between cash holdings and firm value.

Company value or Firm value is a certain condition that has been achieved by the company as an illustration of public trust and shareholders towards the company after going through an activity process for several years, since the company was first established until now. This study aims to determine the effect that occurs between Leverage, Asymmetric Information, and Corporate Governance on the Firm Value through Cash Holdings as a mediating variable. The data used in this study are published financial report from 33 manufacturing companies in the Consumer Goods Industry Sector listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2011 - 2017. The conclusion of this study is that cash holdings are only able to mediate the influence of corporate governance with a proxy proportion of the board independence on firm value. Directly cash holding and corporate governance with a proxy proportion of the number of independent commissionersalso influence the firm value while leverage, asymmetric information and corporate governance with a proxy percentage of the number of share ownership by managerial do not directly affect the firm value of the company. So as to increase the value of the company, companies should determine the proportion of the right amount of board independence so it can create good corporate governance that can increase value of the company.

This study analyzes the impact of corporate governance (CG) and cash holdings (CH) on earnings quality and the implication on firm value. We hypothesize that earnings quality mediate the impact of CG and CH on firm value. Banking sector was chosen as the object of research because this sector is quite vulnerable to the global financial crisis. The population consists of banking companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the period of 2013-2017. Data were analyzed by multiple regression models using SPSS software. The results show that CG and CH have a significant effect on earnings quality. But this influence shows the opposite direction of expectations. Banks with good CG have lower earnings quality, and banks with high CH show better earnings quality. Only CG that has a significant effect on firm value with negative direction. This study did not find the mediating effect from both variables.
