Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test bagasse extract as an effective corrosion inhibitor. Design/methodology/approach – The bagasse was extracted without any toxic substance and was found to be effective for corrosion of J55 steel. Findings – The inhibition efficiency of bagasse was more than 90 per cent in 3.5 per cent NaCl solution saturated with CO2 for corrosion inhibition of J55 steel. Research limitations/implications – The inhibition effect of Saccharum sinense bagasse extract on the corrosion of J55 steel in 3.5 weight per cent NaCl saturated with CO2 solution was investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curve and scanning electron microscope. Practical implications – It can be used as low-cost corrosion inhibitor. Social implications – It is an environment-friendly corrosion inhibitor. Originality/value – This work is original and carried out in Southwest Petroleum University, China. This is not communicated anywhere else.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to profile various types of Web-based tools to facilitate research collaboration within and across institutions. Design/methodology/approach Various Web-based tools were tested by the author. Additionally, tutorial videos and guides were reviewed. Findings There are various free and low-cost tools available to assist in the collaborative research process, and librarians are well-positioned to facilitate their usage. Practical implications Librarians and researchers will learn about various types of tools available at free or at low cost to fulfill needs of the collaborative research process. Social implications As the tools highlighted are either free or of low cost, they are also valuable to start-ups and can be recommended for entrepreneurs. Originality/value As the realm of Web-based collaborative tools continues to evolve, the options must be continually revisited and reviewed for currency.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 M HCl. Design/methodology/approach – A pharmaceutical drug acetyl G was investigated for its corrosion inhibition efficiency using weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Findings – The inhibition efficiency increased with increase in inhibitor concentration. Results from polarisation studies revealed mixed type of inhibition. Impedance studies, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform spectroscopy confirm the adsorption of inhibitor on the mild steel surface. Research limitations/implications – The drug acetyl G has sulphur and nitrogen atoms which effectively block the corrosion of mild steel and is non-toxic and has good inhibition efficiency. Practical implications – This method provides an excellent, non-toxic and cost-effective material as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium. Originality/value – Application of this drug as a corrosion inhibitor has not been reported yet in the literature. Replacing the organic inhibitors, this green inhibitor shows excellent inhibition efficiency. This is adsorbed excellently on the mild steel surface due to the presence of long chain and hetero atoms. Thus, the drug retards the corrosion reaction.

Purpose The conventional method for evaluation of corrosion resistance of aluminum flakes is based on the volume of evolved hydrogen in acidic and basic environments. This study aims to introduce electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a method to evaluate corrosion resistance of aluminum flakes. Design/methodology/approach Aluminum flakes with different surface modifications were compressed to build a disk. Then, the disks were examined by EIS in NaCl solution. Also, the corrosion resistance of the flakes was evaluated by the conventional method. Findings The results revealed applicability of EIS for evaluation of corrosion resistance of aluminum flakes. Originality/value Application of EIS to evaluate corrosion resistance of aluminum flakes is novel. As it can provide fast, reliable and quantitative estimation of the corrosion resistance of the aluminum flakes in the 3.5 per cent NaCl solution. This medium is highly encountered for the aluminum flakes used in organic coatings, that is why test in NaCl solution is more convenient compared to the conventional methods using acid and alkaline conditions.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the consumer opinion towards the low-cost airlines or low-cost carriers (LCCs) (these two terms are used interchangeably) industry in Malaysia to better understand consumers’ needs and to provide better services. Sentiment analysis is undertaken in revealing current customers’ satisfaction level towards low-cost airlines. Design/methodology/approach – About 10,895 tweets (data collected for two and a half months) are analysed. Text mining techniques are used during data pre-processing and a mixture of statistical techniques are used to segment the customers’ opinion. Findings – The results with two different sentiment algorithms show that there is more positive than negative polarity across the different algorithms. Clustering results show that both K-Means and spherical K-Means algorithms delivered similar results and the four main topics that are discussed by the consumers on Twitter are customer service, LCCs tickets promotions, flight cancellations and delays and post-booking management. Practical implications – Gaining knowledge of customer sentiments as well as improvements on the four main topics discussed in this study, i.e. customer service, LCCs tickets promotions, flight cancellations or delays and post-booking management will help LCCs to attract more customers and generate more profits. Originality/value – This paper provides useful insights on customers’ sentiments and opinions towards LCCs by utilizing social media information.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is looking at Feel Good Management as a valuable tool to shape workplace culture and drive employee happiness: a low cost but priceless strategy for engaging a global workforce. Design/methodology/approach – A look back at Feel Good Management in practice after four years in global workforce. Findings – Very favorable impact on recruitment, retention and engagement. Purpose The purpose of this research paper was to investigate the use of methanolic extract of Salvia hispanica (S. hispanica) as a green corrosion inhibitor for bronze in a simulated acid rain solution. Design/methodology/approach Extract of S. hispanica was used as a green corrosion inhibitor for bronze in simulated acid rain solution. Electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise were used. Parameters such as polarization, charge transfer and noise resistance (Rp, Rct and Rn, respectively) were calculated. Findings Results showed that the extract acts as a good, anodic type of inhibitor. The inhibitor efficiency increased with increasing its concentration up to 400 ppm, decreasing beyond this concentration. Efficiency also increased with an increase in the immersion time. The inhibition was due to the adsorption of components found in the S. hispanica extract following a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Practical implications S. hispanica extract can be used as a corrosion inhibitor for bronze in acid rain solution. Originality/value This study provides new information on the inhibition features of S. hispanica under specific conditions. This eco-friendly inhibitor could find applications to protect bronze exposed to polluted urban atmospheres.

Purpose This paper aims to expand the application area of Inconel 718 alloy in marine environment, the sensitivity of pitting corrosion should be analyzed and discussed, especially the effect of block carbides. Design/methodology/approach Effect of carbides on the sensitivity of pitting corrosion for Inconel 718 alloy was carried out at 30°C in 3.5% NaCl solution using dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and anodic polarization techniques. In addition, the initiation of pitting corrosion was investigated by immersion test in 0.05 M HCl + 6% FeCl3 solution. Findings As a result, the precipitation of carbides, as the initiation of pitting corrosion, increased pitting corrosion susceptibility, especially the block carbides could lead to deep-spalling. Within that process, temperature and potential acted as the main controlling factors, and the effect of the latter was more distinct. Originality/value The initiation of pitting corrosion was revealed by the immersion test. The mechanism of pitting corrosion was analyzed and discussed.

This paper presents the investigation of cyproconazole,namely2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-cyclopropyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) butan-2-ol,ascorrosion inhibitor for copper in synthetic seawater (3.5% NaCl solution).The inhibition action of cyproconazole on the corrosion of copper was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization.The selective desorption of Cyproconazole from copper surface was also studied by the differential polarization curves.EIS indicates that the inhibition formed an adsorption film on copper surface.The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing concentration.Polarization curves show that Cyproconazole acts as mixed-up inhibitor.

In this research, 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel in CO2 aerated 1% NaCl solution with buffer pH adjustment has been studied by means of electrochemical impedance (EIS) and polarization (Tafel plot). MPA was found to be an effective carbon steel inhibitor. Percentage inhibition efficiency (IE %) calculated by both Tafel plot and EIS, ranged from 85% to 90%. MPA was found to affect the cathodic processes and act as cathodic-type inhibitors. Mechanism of inhibit corrosion by adsorption mechanism leads to the formation of a protective chemisorbed film on the metal surface film which suppresses the dissolution reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction is activation controlled.
