A network perspective and value added tasks: the case of agri-food value chain

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how network perspective can be used to determine the importance of key dimensions of network in driving firm's performance within an Agri-Food Value Chain (AFVC). It aims to analyze how factors of network and value added tasks have an impact on firm’s performance in the context of agri-food sector Design/methodology/approach This research employs a quantitative method. Based on an illustrative empirical case, the research tests a simple variance-based reflective Structural Equation Model (SEM) with main effects based on a sample of 200 firms within AFVC in Jordan. Findings The results identify the high-order factors of business networks and demonstrate the role of network perspective on firm’s performance, acting as the main strategy to improve long-term business in AFVC. The results show that firm's performance is mostly driven by the three key factors of network (actors, resources and activities), as well as by the four levels of value added tasks (form, time, place and possession). Research limitations/implications This research has important implications for different level managers at firms. By understanding the various factors that are most important between partners at the firm level and between firms in a network, managers can focus their efforts on these factors in order to foster successful long term businesses and their performances. We further provide some managerial recommendations for more effective management of AFVC in terms of leveraging firm's performance. Originality/value This is one of few studies that investigate factors of network in value chain firms. The results show that the network perspective can link both the key factors of network and the levels of value added tasks for better firm's performance in AFVC.

Mobile technology has begun to transform the way young retail consumers shop, allowing them more intermediate control over purchasing process. With competition accelerating in retail industry, mobile devices have been used widely in delivering value-added services. Hence, mobile commerce is likely to make a strong influence on business activities, consumer behavior, as well as national and global markets. The purpose of this paper is to identify key factors influencing customer satisfaction and loyalty in mobile commerce by empirically-based research questionnaire. Based on previous literature, the paper builds sets of customer satisfaction and loyalty constructs for mobile commerce.  Significant constructs and their relationships are examined by m-commerce satisfaction model employing structural equation model. Research findings indicate that all constructs significantly affect Smartphone customers’ satisfaction, except for the price. Furthermore, satisfaction has moderately strong influence on Smartphone customer’ loyalty. The implication of this research to researchers and practitioners is discussed.

In recent years, the unsustainable behaviors of straw utilization have led to waste straw being one of the sources of agricultural non-point source pollution. Studying the resource utilization of crop straw is conducive to expediate the development of ecological and green agriculture. More importantly, it has long-term significance for the recycling of agricultural waste, improving the quality of rural life, and the employment of farmers. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), taking the representative survey questionnaire of farmers in Jilin Province, China as the sample, the structural equation model (SEM) was constructed to study the main factors that drive the utilization behaviors of straw resources of farmers and to explore the driving mechanism of the farmers behaviors in Jilin Province. The results show that the behavioral attitude and subjective norms of farmers in Jilin Province not only indirectly affect their actual behaviors through behavioral willingness, but also has significant direct effects on their behaviors. The most critical factors that affect the willingness of farmers to utilize the straw resources in Jilin Province are subjective norms and moral responsibilities. The subjective norms of farmers have a direct and significant positive impact on their willingness and behaviors. Behavioral attitude and perceived behavior control have a significant positive impact on their willingness. The behavioral willingness has a significant positive impact on their actual behaviors. This study provides guidance for the utilization of straw resources policy implications.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of the co-alignment of structural variables on innovation, wherein Bogotá-based SMEs, belonging to the industrial, commercial and services sectors, were used as samples. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted using a causal inference methodology and through the application of a structural equation model. Findings The results indicate that organizational structure has an influence on innovation, although this is true only for some variables and only when the analysis is performed separately. When performed under strategic co-alignment conditions, however, its influence becomes greater. Originality/value Organizational structure and innovation are determining factors of organizational performance. Although the strategic co-alignment theory has provided points of reference to understanding the phenomenon of organizational performance, there are still many gaps left to be filled. Additionally, it also requires empirical validation especially in relation to Colombian SMEs – and this is where this work makes a contribution.

Using a sample of 51 full-service restaurants from three competing full-service restaurant companies, we extended the research on service process management by connecting the reactions of service-based employees to guests’ satisfaction with their service experience and firm-level performance. We replicated and confirmed previous tests of the existing guest–server exchange model connecting frontline-level employees’ attitudes toward their work as service providers to guests’ satisfaction in the restaurants. Most notably, we extended the guest–server exchange model by including the relationship between guests’ reports of satisfaction with service and firm performance, bringing together three unique sources of data. The findings from the test of our structural equation model revealed that 26% of the variance in firm performance was accounted for by guest satisfaction, showing that organizational policies and support for employees, are connected to a positive service climate, guest satisfaction, and firm performance, measured as sales per available seat in each restaurant.

Purpose Football is significant in the global economic context. However, the same significance is not identified in the value added to the chain, as the elements that make it up act in a disintegrated and independent manner with undesired effects. Consequently, it is necessary to structure the undesired effects to seek the basic causes that sustain this problematic situation. Thus, this paper aims to use a CRT to structure the undesired effects and basic causes that limit the positive economic impacts of the south Brazilian football value chain. Design/methodology/approach A semi-structured questionnaire was applied with questions about the existing constraints. Based on the answers in the interviews, the current reality tree was elaborated, premised on identifying the basic causes that sustain the undesirable effects detected. Findings Among the main results, it was identified that management problems of the traditional leaders of football clubs and federations are considered the main reason why south of Brazil football cannot fully exploit its economic potential. Originality/value It is evidenced that the paper shows the undesired effect that has the most impact on the development of this chain, and it is important to propose improvements to its root causes, aiming at greater efficacy of the resulting actions.

M&A performance is a multifaceted, compound construct with no overarching factor that captures all different dimensions. This paper examines the concept of acquisition performance and proposes a model that links firm-level factors and transaction parameters with firms’ short-term and long-term performance, extending to financial-, market- and innovation measures. Building on past empirical studies on the influence of various factors on M&A performance, a multi-dimensional structural equation model has been developed and it has been tested with a dataset on acquisitions in the Indian technology sector over a period of ten years. The results suggest that: (a) smaller acquirers with higher book value and leveraged firms demonstrate better long-term performance; (b) contrary to established understanding, short-term market returns are not influenced by deal parameters; (c) majority stake purchases show relatively lesser gains—suggesting the possible presence of post-acquisition integration issues and, (d) acquirers with high intangible assets continue to do well on innovation performance post-acquisition. By indicating situations and conditions under which an acquisition would potentially lead to a performance gain for the acquirer, these results provide significant insight to practitioners pursuing M&As for growth opportunities.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari intellectual capital terhadap kinerja perusahaan dengan menggunakan perhitungan VAIC. Metode analisis yang dilakukan adalah kuantitatif dengan sampel yang diambil melalui purposive sample sebanyak 30 perusahaan dari industri perbankan. Alat analisis yang digunakan menggunakan Structural Equation Model Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS). Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa indikator dari variabel laten intellectual dan kinerja perusahaan yang mempengaruhi secara absolut adalah Value Added Human Capital (VAHU) dan Return on Asset(ROA) yaitu sebesar 0,713 dan 1. Hipotesis yang dihasilkan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh positif antara intelectual capital terhadap kinerja perusahaan sebesar 0,470 namun tidak signifikan dikarenakan nilai t lebih rendah dari t tabel yaitu 1,592 < 1,96 Kata Kunci: Intellectual Capital, Kinerja Perusahaan, ROA, VACA,VAHU,STVA

<p>Traditional production is carried out using fossil fuels. In recent years, the destructive effects of fossil fuel elimination especially on human health and the environment became prominent. This effect leads to an increase in health expenditures (HE), and health problems that are severe and require long term therapies. To counter this problem, some countries have taken some measures to mini the effects of fossil fuels. One of these measures is called “Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry” or LULUCF for short. LULUCF aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere by natural means that are cheap. In this regard, this paper aims to analyze the effects of harmful gases of total emissions in terms of health expenditures both including LULUCF (LI) and excluding LULUCF (LE). Panel data methodology and SPSS Path (Structural Equation) Model were used and cover G7 countries between 1990 and 2016. It was found that there is no linear relationship between LE and HE and LI has no effect on HE. Path analysis showed a negative correlation between LI total emission and SH and a positive correlation between LE total emission and HE.</p>

Purpose – Developed economies with high-cost environments face industrial transitions from scale-based manufacturing (MAN) to knowledge, technology and intangible asset-based sectors. The purpose of this paper is to examine the changes in employment and value-adding profiles of transitioning industry sectors in Australia and discuss the implications for policy that influences the intellectual capital (IC) profile of industrial sectors in transition. Design/methodology/approach – The approach borrowed concepts from the firm-level strategic management literature and applied them to a macro level of industry analysis. In this paper the authors examine the transitions in the Australian economy which, due to a rising cost base, is experiencing a decline in its value chain-oriented MAN sector. The authors contrast four industry sectors with the MAN sector and examine the different value creation models. Findings – The findings clearly show how the contribution to employment and value added (termed Economic Value Contribution ) of the different sectors vary. The authors extend these findings to a discussion on policy and the dimensions of IC that may have a role to play in facilitating transitions within an economy. The main conclusion is that a more rapid transition and higher value may be created if innovation and entrepreneurship are facilitated by targeted policies in transitioning sector. Research limitations/implications – This work is based on a single country analysis of selected industry sectors. Further work needs to be done across many more countries to contrast the findings across nations/regions that differ in industrial complexity and to refine the analytical framework to improve construct validity and increase analytical power. Practical implications – This work has implications for policy-makers facing the challenges of a transitioning economy, whether national or regional. Governments that are hands-on with respect to interventions to salvage and/or extend the life of sectors are at risk of missing opportunities to build the capacities and capabilities of emerging sectors while those governments that are hands-off, deferring to market mechanisms, risk transitions that are too little and/or too late to maintain a national or regional competitiveness. Originality/value – To the authors knowledge, this is the first attempt to integrate the specific firm-level strategic management perspectives, used in this paper, with the macro-policy level to examine industry sectors with the twin metrics of economic productivity and employment in transitioning economies.

ABSTRACT Innovations in organizations often arise through the efforts of intrapreneurs—entrepreneurial-oriented employees who typically work outside of their day-to-day job responsibilities. Currently, little research has addressed this important source of innovation. Using Innovation Value Chain theory, we theorize that individual, organizational, and innovation-specific factors influence intrapreneurial innovation, operationalized as managerial accountants' intentions to champion the adoption of an IT innovation within their organizations. Additionally, we consider how information system complexity may influence these factors. We test our model using a structural equation model (SEM) with 320 management accountants. Perceptions of organizational orientation toward innovation and of the technology are significant determinants of individuals' intention to champion the adoption of continuous monitoring. Individual inclination to innovate is not significant in the presence of the other two factors. We also find that system complexity lowers perceptions of the technology's benefits, thus inhibiting intention to champion.
