Purpose This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings Say what you like about the dictatorial bosses of the Industrial Revolution in the UK, but they did not have to manage the myriad of working options open to the employees of today. Remote working, flexible hours, compressed hours, carer’s leave, and duvet days – you can imagine the ruddy faces the early industrial pioneers would have got, even ruddier if presented with a request from a man seeking to take nine months’ parental leave in place of their partner. As for people wanting to work just a few hours a week to enable them to follow a certain lifestyle or to have more than one job – no, their stove pipe hats would have been thrown to the ground in sheer exasperation. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Design/methodology/approach – This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds his/her own impartial comments and places the articles in context. The situation is that of a corner shop in Northern England run by a cantankerous middle aged man with a pronounced stutter, who variously abuses, gossips about or tries to flatter his customers. Inventory is massive, point of sale technology primitive, and as the title suggests, opening hours are long. Hilarity ensues. Practical implications – This study provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value – The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and an easy-to-digest format.

Findings This conceptual paper concentrates on the strategic use of blockchain as a way of organizations gaining ongoing competitive advantages. Moving deeper into the fourth industrial revolution, the organizational advantages of blockchain implementation are the secure, verifiable, peer-to-peer transparency of agreement or communication mechanisms like smart contracts, since they can enhance organizational efficiency and therefore competitive performance. However, blockchain currently remains in a nascent phase on a practical use level, meaning organizations can now strategically prepare to adopt its capabilities in future. This is done by teams educating themselves about blockchain, and by defining problems that the technology could solve. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings As the world approaches the year 2020 – which has been the most looked-forward-to years since the Millennium, offering as it does the opportunity to use “20:20 vision” as a descriptor – it is perhaps useful to look back over those 20 years to understand how far sustainability and environmental concerns have developed with regard to business strategy. While these concerns were prevalent at the turn of the century, they were not mainstream in terms of how they were dealt with by firms, and there was considerable difference in how firms treated them depending on where they were based, how big they were and how it fed into their overall corporate strategy. Purpose – Reviews the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoints practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach – This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings – Since the Millennium, one of the key trends in European food retailing has seen the rise and fall of major supermarket chains. While still immensely profitable and successful, the likes of Tesco and Carrefour have been unable to replicate early huge gains in this period as smaller, cheaper and more nimble retailers have begun to steal market share. In particular, the UK has seen two classic market phenomena with the rise of Tesco as the biggest retailer sweeping all before, only for a combination of changing buying habits and increased popularity of discount retailers to decimate the market share growth of Tesco and other major operators in the “squeezed middle”. Practical implications – Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value – The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Purpose Reviews the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoints practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings When it comes to innovation, the common perception of the kinds of innovation that are effective are often way out of line with what actually creates value for firms. Take the service sector – despite its huge size and domination of mature economies such as the UK, innovation will not be regarded as important outside of web design or digital development. However, there are so many ways in which true innovation can disrupt, revolutionize or create an entire new market in ways that does not involve tech teams at all. Originality/value The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.
