Analysis on the steady state performance of a multi pad externally adjustable fluid film bearing

Purpose This study aims to investigate the performance characteristics of an externally adjustable bearing with multiple pads in steady state conditions. The proposed adjustable bearing geometry can effectively control the hydrodynamic operation in bearing clearances by adjusting the pads in radial and tilt directions. These pad adjustments have a significant role in improving the bearing characteristics such as load capacity, attitude angle, side leakage, friction variable and Sommerfeld number, which will be analysed in this paper. Design/methodology/approach The adjustable bearing is designed with circumferentially spaced four bearing pads subjected to similar radial and tilt adjustments. Tilt angles are applied along the leading edges of bearing pads. A modified film thickness equation is used to incorporate the pad adjustments and accurately predict the variation in film profile. Finite difference approximation is adopted to solve the Reynolds equation and discretize the fluid film domain. Findings For negative radial and tilt adjustments, higher hydrodynamic pressures are generated in bearing clearances, which increases the bearing load capacity at different eccentricity ratios. From comparative analysis for different pad adjustments, superior bearing performance is observed for bearing pads under negative radial and negative tilt adjustments. Originality/value This research presents a detailed theoretical approach to analyse the performance capability of a four pad adjustable bearing geometry, which is not available in literatures. Improved bearing performances with negative pad adjustments can attract bearing designers to implement the proposed adjustability-bearing concept in rotating machineries.

Paper deals with the effect of turbulence on steady state performance characteristics of an eccentrically loaded 120° single pad externally adjustable fluid film bearing. The bearing has an aspect ratio of one and operates over a wide range of eccentricity ratios and adjustments. Two load-offset positions (β/χ) of 0.45 and 0.55 are considered in the present analysis. Reynolds equation incorporated with the Linearized turbulence model of Ng and Pan is solved numerically using finite difference method. A comparative study predicts that, load capacity of a bearing operating with β/χ = 0.55 and Re = 16000 is superior for negative radial and tilt adjustment configuration of the pad.

In high speed, high load fluid-film bearings, the laminar-turbulent flow transition can lead to a considerable reduction of the maximum bearing temperatures, due to a homogenization of the fluid-film temperature in radial direction. Since this phenomenon only occurs significantly in large bearings or at very high sliding speeds, means to achieve the effect at lower speeds have been investigated in the past. This paper shows an experimental investigation of this effect and how it can be used for smaller bearings by optimized eddy grooves, machined into the bearing surface. The investigations were carried out on a Miba journal bearing test rig with Ø120 mm shaft diameter at speeds between 50 m/s–110 m/s and at specific bearing loads up to 4.0 MPa. To investigate the potential of this technology, additional temperature probes were installed at the crucial position directly in the sliding surface of an up-to-date tilting pad journal bearing. The results show that the achieved surface temperature reduction with the optimized eddy grooves is significant and represents a considerable enhancement of bearing load capacity. This increase in performance opens new options for the design of bearings and related turbomachinery applications.

Reynolds’ equation for a full finite journal bearing lubricated by an incompressible fluid is solved by separation of variables to yield a general series solution. A resulting Hill equation is solved by Fourier series methods, and accurate eigenvalues and eigenvectors are calculated with a digital computer. The finite Sommerfeld problem is solved as an example, and precise values for the bearing load capacity are presented. Comparisons are made with the methods and numerical results of other authors.

Abstract In this paper, the mathematical model of herringbone grooved aerodynamic foil bearings is established, and the finite difference method is used to obtain the discretized form of Reynolds equation. The static characteristics of bearings, such as film pressure, film temperature, are obtained by solving the Reynolds equation and energy equation. The bearing load capacity and friction power consumption are obtained by calculating the film thickness and film pressure distribution in the bearing gap. The influence of the bearing operational parameters, such as eccentricity and rotation speed, and the bearing structural parameters, such as groove width, groove depth ratio, groove number and helix angle, on the bearing load capacity and friction power consumption of bearings are analyzed. The methods of improving bearing load capacity and reducing friction power consumption are obtained. Simultaneously, by comparing the bearing load capacity and friction power consumption of herringbone grooved gas foil bearings and gas foil bearings (GFBs) without herringbone grooves, the influence of herringbone grooves on the bearing performance is obtained.

Purpose This study aims to examine the magneto-elastohydrodynamic effect on finite-width slider-bearings lubrication using a non-Newtonian lubricant. Design/methodology/approach Based on the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory and Stokes micro-continuum mechanics, the modified two-dimensional Reynolds equation including bearing deformation was derived. Findings It is found that the bearing deformation diminishes the load-capacity and increases the friction coefficient in comparison with the rigid case. However, the non-Newtonian effect increases load-capacity but decreases the friction coefficient. Moreover, the use of a transverse magnetic field increases both the friction coefficient and load capacity. Originality/value This study combines for the first time MHD and elastic deformation effects on finite-width slider-bearings using a non-Newtonian lubricant.

Purpose The porous bearings are commonly used in slider thrust bearings owing to their self-lubricating properties and cost effectiveness as compared to conventional hydrodynamic bearings. The purpose of this paper is to numerically investigate usefulness of porous layer in hydrostatic thrust bearing operating with magnetic fluid. The effect of magnetic field and permeability has been analysed on steady-state (film pressure, film reaction and lubricant flow rate) and rotor-dynamic (stiffness and damping) parameters of bearing. Design/methodology/approach Finite element approach is used to obtain numerical solution of flow governing equations (Magneto-hydrodynamics Reynolds equation, Darcy law and capillary equation) for computing abovementioned performance indices. Finite element method formulation converts elliptical Reynolds equation into set of algebraic equation that are solved using Gauss–Seidel method. Findings It has been reported that porosity has limited but adverse effects on performance parameters of bearing. The adverse effects of porosity can be minimized by using a circular pocket for achieving better steady-state response and an annular/elliptical pocket, for having better rotor-dynamic response. The use of magnetic fluid is found to be substantially enhancing the fluid film reaction (53%) and damping parameters (55%). Practical implications The present work recommends use of circular pocket for achieving better steady-state performance indices. However, annular and elliptical pockets should be preferred, when design criteria for the bearing are better rotor-dynamic performance. Originality/value This study deals with influence of magnetic fluid, porosity and pocket shape on rotor-dynamic performance of externally pressurized thrust bearing. A generalized thermometer well is analyzed as to temperature-measuring uncertainties. A reliable finite difference approximation to the differential heat balance equation is developed. For those cases where the fluid may be considered transparent to radiation (i.e., for εg ≈ 0), a simplified linearized approximation is given. Whenever conduction effects can be neglected (i.e., for (hc D/k)(L2/(D2 − d2)) > 20), a rapid hand-calculation method is indicated. Several examples of graphical approximations are given.

Purpose This paper aims to find the numerical solution of planar and non-planar Burgers’ equation and analysis of the shock behave. Design/methodology/approach First, the authors discritize the time-dependent term using Crank–Nicholson finite difference approximation and use quasilinearization to linearize the nonlinear term then apply Scale-2 Haar wavelets for space integration. After applying this scheme on partial differential, the equation transforms into a system of algebraic equation. Then, the system of equation is solved using Gauss elimination method. Findings Present method is the extension of the method (Jiwari, 2012). The numerical solutions using Scale-2 Haar wavelets prove that the proposed method is reliable for planar and non-planar nonlinear Burgers’ equation and yields results better than other methods and compatible with the exact solutions. Originality/value The numerical results for non-planar Burgers’ equation are very sparse. In the present paper, the authors identify where the shock wave and discontinuity occur in planar and non-planar Burgers’' equation.

Purpose Micro-surface texturing is emerging as a possible way to enhance the tribological performance of hydrodynamic fluid film bearings. In view of this, numerical simulations are carried out to examine the influence of surface texture on performance of hybrid thrust bearing system. This paper aims to determine optimum attributes of micro-grooves for thrust bearing operating in hybrid mode. Design/methodology/approach An iterative source code based on finite element formulation of Reynolds equation has been developed to numerically simulate flow of lubricant through the bearing. Mass-conserving algorithm based on Jakobsson–Floberg–Olsson (JFO) condition has been used to numerically capture cavitation phenomenon in the bearing. Gauss Siedel method has been used to obtain steady state performance parameters of the bearings. Findings A parametric study has been performed to improve the load supporting capacity of the bearing by optimizing micro-groove attributes and configuration. It is noticed that use of full-section micro-groove is beneficial in improving the efficiency of bearing by enhancing the fluid film reaction and reducing the film frictional power losses. Originality/value This study is helpful in examining the usefulness of micro-groove textured surfaces in hybrid thrust bearing applications.
