Exploring the use of internet by university students for seeking health related information

Purpose Internet is both a medium and a platform for information exchange. This characteristic of internet is gradually metamorphosing it into an e-learning enabler. A significant percentage of internet users access health-related information through the medium of internet, but little is known about the factors that determine such behaviour. This study aims to explore the factors that determine the behaviour of those seeking health-related information in the virtual world. Design/methodology/approach The present study analyses the role of perceived ease of usefulness (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), self-efficacy (SE) and information quality (IQ) on the intention (IU) of the internet users to seek health-related information. Researcher-controlled sampling was used for data collection from 210 university students. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), t-test and correlation have been used for data analysis. Findings The results of the study demonstrate that except SE, all other factors have a positive relationship with the intention of the users to seek health-related information. The findings suggest that PU and IQ overshadow PEOU in encouraging the users seeking such health-related information over the internet. Originality/value The present study extends the understanding of e-learning adoption associated with seeking health-related information. The researchers propose an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) model to study the factors influencing the use of internet in seeking health-related information by the students enrolled in medical and non-medical courses.

The use of Internet to search information related to health has become a common phenomenon. This article investigates the seeking of health-related information of the college going students over the Internet. The researchers have tested the technology acceptance model (TAM) to determine the behavioural intention of the students to seek health-related information over the Internet. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed among the students who were involved in Internet use. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were applied to the responded data. The results showed that it is the perceived usefulness (PU) which has a direct impact on the behavioural intention of the Internet users to search health-related information over the Internet.

Many of the top causes of death in the world are directly related to risk factors that can be avoided with changes in lifestyle behaviors. Computers with Internet access are widely available, and their multimedia capabilities show great potential for e-learning. Furthermore, most of the frequent Internet users already look for health related information online. This chapter presents an interactive simulator that educates people on how to mitigate the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The application is named SimBody and was initially developed in the context of a Master Thesis at Technical University of Lisbon (IST), in collaboration with ZPX, a multimedia software development company. SimBody allows the users to control the behaviors of an avatar. Besides showing the contribution of each decision towards the risk of cardiovascular diseases, it offers contextualized lifestyle advices and depicts the progression of atherosclerosis. After knowledge transmission tests, the majority of the participants stated that after using SimBody they are more aware of the dangers and intend to introduce changes to their lifestyle.

Abstract: Introduction: More sophisticated implementation of the Internet in healthcare improves medical services innumerably. To better understand the patients’ preferences for health-related use of Internet is warranted. Aim: Our aim was to determine the patients’ health-related Internet use. Method: Patients attending our private clinic between October 2016 and April 2017 were surveyed. Results: 208 questionnaires have been evaluated. Most patients use Internet daily, primarily on mobiles. The majority have already searched for health-related information online, 19% do regularly. 53% are satisfied with online contents and open to websites recommended by physicians. 32% of patients have already communicated with doctors online and 93% are satisfied doing so. 8% of patients use health-related smartphone applications regularly, 6% use other Internet-based health-monitoring devices. 60% of patients have already chosen a physician based on web information, while 17% do regularly. 82% of respondents have not yet shared health-related information on the Internet. Conclusions: The Internet is widely used by patients seeking information about their health, yet they are dissatisfied with the quality. Many patients are open to recommendations offered by physicians regarding sources of online information. Online communication between physician and patient might increase patient satisfaction. There is no breakthrough in the use of health-related websites, mobile apps or devices in Hungary. The demand for such service could be considered moderate. Additionally, online patient forums are not specifically popular. The study aimed at investigating the influence of E-learning Self- Efficacy (ELSE) on the acceptance of e-learning by using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). According to the TAM which used as the theoretical basis, both of the Perceived Usefulness (PU) and the Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) influence directly the end user's Behavioral Intention (BI) to accept a technology. A survey was used to collect information about the perceptions of Al-Aqsa university students. Collected data was analyzed using the regression equation by SPSS. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain responses from (592) students who took the e-courses of the “instructional technology, research methods, measurement and evaluation”. The most significant results of the study showed that Al-Aqsa university students have high levels of acceptance and Self-Efficacy toward E-Learning representing a rate above 75%. Furthermore, there are positive and significant relationships between dependence and independence variables. However, the study found a significant relationship between finding ELSE, PEOU, PU and BI (Y= 1.2 +0.05ELSE+0.06PEOU+0.16PU+e, r = 0.65, P<0.01). Other relationships were found among variables such as ELSE, PEOU and PU (Y= 7.5 +0.11ELSE+0.21PEOU+e, r = 0.62, P<0.01), ELSE and PEOU (Y= 0.56 +0.242ELSE+e, r= 0.64, P<0.01).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the factors influencing adoption of internet banking in urban India. Design/methodology/approach – A model has been proposed based on the technology acceptance model (TAM). The proposed model is referred to as extended TAM and is better suited to identify and quantify the important factors that influence adoption of internet banking technology in India. Primary data relating to the variables affecting technology adoption and demographic profile are collected using a questionnaire survey. Data were collected from 344 individuals who are either current/prospective internet banking users. Structural equation modeling was used to identify the important factors affecting internet banking technology adoption. Findings – The factors of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, awareness, quality of internet connection and computer self-efficacy are primary determinants of the attitude toward the use of internet banking in urban India. The attitude toward the use of internet banking can be used to predict the intention to use internet banking systems by users. Practical implications – This research enables internet banking service providers in urban India to design new service offerings or modify current service offerings to achieve higher adoption rates in internet banking. Originality/value – The paper investigates the adoption of internet technologies by banking users by proposing an extended TAM model that is more appropriate to capture the issues related to adoption in urban India. The paper is of value to researchers in the area of technology adoption and banking service providers in urban India.

Worldwide internet access is increasing exponentially. The UK Government Office for National Statistics reported that between 2002 and 2009 the proportion of UK households with internet access increased from 46% to 70%. Between 2007 and 2009 the proportion of UK adults using the internet to access health information rose from 27% to 42%. Similar situations exist in Continental Europe and the USA, where 52% of internet users and 61% of adults respectively search online for medical information. In 2003 it was estimated that 4.5% of all internet searches globally were for health related information. Moreover, patients now frequently choose to seek health information online. Indeed Hesse et al reported that almost one in two patients search the internet before consulting a physician.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nomological web between technology acceptance model metrics such as perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived web privacy of e-learning resources on attitude and behavioural intention of virtual platform for learning by university students. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a quantitative method by using self-administered survey instruments among university students who have at least one year of e-learning experience. Psychometric nomenclature of survey instruments was conducted and the reliability and validity metrics of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, extent of e-learning use, perceived web-based privacy, attitude and behavioural intentions meet the threshold as established in extant literature. Correlation and regression analysis were conducted to explicate hypothesised relationship. Findings The study found out that e-learning use, perceived usefulness and attitude are associated with learners behavioural intentions, while perceived ease of use and perceived web-based privacy are not significantly associated with behavioural intentions of e-learners in Botswana. The findings further showed in the regression analysis that the extent of e-learning use, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and attitude are significantly related to behavioural intentions, while the perceived web-based privacy is not significantly related to behavioural intentions. Practical implications The e-learning processes thus help outline the effective marketing strategies and promotions or nichemanship among university students which help uncover the influence of innovation metrics on e-learning among the youth target audience in Botswana as the country seeks to achieve a paradigm shift from mineral-led economy to knowledge-based society. Originality/value Despite the popularity of e-learning approach as explicated in extant literature, the extent to which such platform is accepted with respect to security and reliability most especially in an emerging economy like Botswana is ambiguous. This study thus seeks to establish the extent to which e-learning in Botho University and Botswana Open University creates a platform for intention to use as regards technological acceptance parsimonious model in Botswana.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of e-learning adoption (ELA) among students in the University of Ghana. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative research approach comprising of a survey of 337 students was adopted. Data were collected using questionnaires designed in conjunction with 13 factors (computer self-efficacy (CSE), perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU) and attitude towards use (ATTU)) in the conceptual model of the study. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modelling. Findings – The result revealed that PU and ATTU had a direct effect on ELA whilst, PU and PEOU also had a direct relationship on ATTU. Other variables such as CSE and PEOU had an indirect relationship on ELA though they were found to have an insignificant direct relationship on ELA. Practical implications – The level of significance of each construct identified in the study provide practical guidance to school administrators and instructors as to which factors to pay close attention to when implementing e-learning projects within their respective institutions. Originality/value – This study provides insight into ELA from the students’ perspective, through an extension of the TAM model in a developing country context given the existence of cultural differences and societal idiosyncrasies which exist in different contexts, particularly in Africa.

El propósito de este artículo es presentar un estudio donde se consideraron los incentivos que tienen los estudiantes universitarios en el uso real de sistemas e-learning para promover el aprendizaje auto dirigido y colaborativo en el contexto de sus cursos universitarios. Además, se propone un esquema teórico de investigación en base al modelo TAM. Se construyó un cuestionario en línea, que se distribuyó por correo electrónico a todos los alumnos de la carrera de Finanzas y Auditoria de la Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas. En total 128 estudiantes universitarios respondieron. Se realizó un análisis exploratorio y confirmatorio utilizando Mínimos Cuadrados Parciales (PLS) para validar el modelo de investigación. Se establecieron las relaciones existentes entre la experiencia, normas subjetivas, entretenimiento percibido, ansiedad por la computadora, auto eficiencia computacional, la utilidad percibida y la facilidad de uso percibida, la actitud de aprendizaje y el uso real de los sistemas e-learning. Como resultado en el modelo propuesto se obtuvo una varianza explicada del 49,7% en el uso de dicho sistema. También se encontró que la mayoría de los estudiantes se interesaron en aprender con la plataforma Moodle y lo consideraron como una herramienta de aprendizaje útil.AbstractThe purpose of this article is to present a study that considered the factors that university students have in the real use of e-learning systems to promote self-directed and collaborative learning in the context of their university courses. In addition, a theoretical research scheme based on the TAM model was proposed and an online questionnaire was constructed, which was distributed by e-mail to all students of the Finance and Audit career at the University of the Armed Forces. In total, 128 university students responded. An exploratory and confirmatory analysis was carried out using Partial Least Squares (PLS) to validate the research model. The relationships between experience, subjective norms, perceived entertainment, computer anxiety, computational self-efficiency, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, the learning attitude and the actual use of e-learning systems were made. As a result of the proposed model, an explained variance of 49.7% was obtained in the use of this system and it was found that most of the students were interested in learning with the Moodle platform and considered it a useful learning tool.
