Purpose Alzheimer’s is the most commonly occurring neurodegenerative disease and progressive cognitive impairment is its major symptom due to which the patients tend to wander and get lost in unfamiliar places. This is a constant cause of worry for caretakers and a source of distress to the patients themselves. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a low-cost, autonomous, embedded systems-based wearable device for real-time location tracking using GPS and the concept of geo-fencing. The system provides real-time updates in the form of a text message sent to the mobile number of a family member or caregiver. Findings An alert is sent whenever the patient moves out of a certain “safe zone” area and sends subsequent updates after every 5 min of such an event. The system supports caregivers of patients with early and moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Social implications Alzheimer’s patients are prone to disorientation, confusion and tend to wander off. Since the device eliminates the need for the patients to operate it and is instead at the discretion of the system itself, the chances of it failing to help are minimized. Hence, with this project, the authors address the need for an autonomous device that can assist caretakers in tracking Alzheimer’s patients. Originality/value The various existing technologies that are in use now for tracking are often high in price, not tailored to Alzheimer’s and are non-autonomous. To overcome this, the authors utilized easily accessible technology into developing this system, which not only be affordable, but also addresses the major flaw in existing systems – which is that they rely on being operated by the patients themselves.

Purpose Low-cost microcomputers such as the Raspberry Pi are common in library makerspaces. This paper aims to create an OBD-II technology to diagnose a vehicle’s condition. Design/methodology/approach An OBD-II scanner plugged into the OBD-II port or usually called the data link connector (DLC), sends diagnostics to the Raspberry Pi. Findings Compared with other microcontrollers such as Arduino, the Raspberry Pi was chosen because it sustains the application to receive real-time diagnostics, process the diagnostics and send commands to automobiles at the same time, rather than Arduino that must wait for another process finished to run another process. Originality/value This paper also represents the history of mobile technology and OBD-II technology, comparison between Arduino and Raspberry Pi and Node.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a development to the hardware and software of a real-time tracking system that provides the position of the tracked vehicle accurately using fairly low-cost equipment and services. Vehicle tracking industries are expanding as businesses are interested to know their fleet vehicles positions minute by minute every day. Many systems were proposed recently that can provide such information. Design/methodology/approach – The system is implemented using GM862 cellular quad band module. A monitoring server and a graphical user interface on a Web site have also been implemented to view the current location of a vehicle on a specific map. Findings – The experiments were conducted and tested in different areas of the Kingdom Of Bahrain using Google maps, and results are discussed. Originality/value – The developed system has been compared to the available and imported tracking systems to some of the telematics companies in Bahrain, and the comparison has been discussed.

Purpose The present study aims to describe the development of halochromic thin film sensors using mixed indicator dyes for monitoring the spoilage of packed seer fish. Design/methodology/approach Thin film was prepared using renewable polysaccharide incorporated with mixed indicator dyes. The thin film was characterized using ultraviolet visible and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The characteristics of the thin film were studied by analyzing the CIELAB and Red Green Blue values and biodegradability. The thin films were evaluated for real-time monitoring of the spoilage of packed seer fish. Findings The thin film sensors were found to exhibit excellent halochromism. The color changes were visible and distinguishable. The sensors responded efficiently for real-time monitoring of spoilage of fish by showing unique color changes. Originality/value This study provides promising mixed indicator that exhibits different colors in the alkaline pH. Also the present study reveals a potential combination of materials for preparation of halochromic sensors that can be used for monitoring the spoilage of packed seer fish in real time.

PurposeIn recent years, there is a gradual shift from sequential computing to parallel computing. Nowadays, nearly all computers are of multicore processors. To exploit the available cores, parallel computing becomes necessary. It increases speed by processing huge amount of data in real time. The purpose of this paper is to parallelize a set of well-known programs using different techniques to determine best way to parallelize a program experimented.Design/methodology/approachA set of numeric algorithms are parallelized using hand parallelization using OpenMP and auto parallelization using Pluto tool.FindingsThe work discovers that few of the algorithms are well suited in auto parallelization using Pluto tool but many of the algorithms execute more efficiently using OpenMP hand parallelization.Originality/valueThe work provides an original work on parallelization using OpenMP programming paradigm and Pluto tool.

Purpose The purpose fo this paper is to Monitor and sense the sysmptoms of COVID-19 as a preliminary measure using electronic wearable devices. This variability is sensed by electrocardiograms observed from a multi-parameter monitor and electronic wearable. This field of interest has evolved into a wide area of investigation with today’s advancement in technology of internet of things for immediate sensing and processing information about profound pain. A window span is estimated and reports of profound pain data are used for monitoring heart rate variability (HRV). A median heart rate is considered for comparisons with a diverse range of variable information obtained from sensors and monitors. Observations from healthy patients are introduced to identify how root mean square of difference between inter beat intervals, standard deviation of inter-beat intervals and mean heart rate value are normalized in HRV analysis. Design/methodology/approach The function of a human heart relates back to the autonomic nervous system, which organizes and maintains a healthy maneuver of inter connected organs. HRV has to be determined for analyzing and reporting the status of health, fitness, readiness and possibilities for recovery, and thus, a metric for deeming the presence of COVID-19. Identifying the variations in heart rate, monitoring and assessing profound pain levels are potential lives saving measures in medical industries. Findings Experiments are proposed to be done in electrical and thermal point of view and this composition will deliver profound pain levels ranging from 0 to 10. Real time detection of pain levels will assist the care takers to facilitate people in an aging population for a painless lifestyle. Originality/value The presented research has documented the stages of COVID-19, symptoms and a mechanism to monitor the progress of the disease through better parameters. Risk factors of the disease are carefully analyzed, compared with test results, and thus, concluded that considering the HRV can study better in the presence of ignorance and negligence. The same mechanism can be implemented along with a global positioning system (GPS) system to track the movement of patients during isolation periods. Despite the stringent control measurements for locking down all industries, the rate of affected people is still on the rise. To counter this, people have to be educated about the deadly effects of COVID-19 and foolproof systems should be in place to control the transmission from affected people to new people. Medications to suppress temperatures, will not be sufficient to alter the heart rate variations, and thus, the proposed mechanism implemented the same. The proposed study can be extended to be associated with Government mobile apps for regular and a consortium of single tracking. Measures can be taken to distribute the low-cost proposal to people for real time tracking and regular updates about high and medium risk patients.
