Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the administrative and legal mechanisms of combating corruption, namely, to determine the means by which it is possible to develop a positive experience in the fight against corruption. Design/methodology/approach Among the methods used to study the problems of the stated subject, the dialectical, comparative-legal, systems, historical and legal, formal and legal, analysis and synthesis can be distinguished. Findings The authors investigated the experience of foreign countries in combating corruption and suggested implementing international experience in national legislation for the successful fight against corruption. In the course of the study, the current state of legal regulations governing anti-corruption activities was characterised, corruption and the main reasons for committing corruption acts were investigated, the problems that arise in the fight against corruption were identified, the main administrative and legal mechanisms for combating corruption were established and the effectiveness of applying these mechanisms in practice was studied. Practical implications The provisions that are enshrined in this paper are of practical value for individuals whose activities are aimed at fighting corruption, as Ukraine is one of the states where corruption flourishes and where the fight against corruption has not been directly implemented in practice for many years. Originality/value Based on the example of international experience in the fight against corruption, proposals and recommendations for improving administrative and legal mechanisms for combating corruption have been developed.

Purpose Defines clear steps for growth planning that support answers to the crucial question: How and where are you planning to scale up the business and what talent do you need to implement this? Design/methodology/approach As the “Business model value matrix” shows, having ‘happy customers’ is only one determinant of a business model’s success. The other essential block of diagnostic questions deals with the current state and prospects of the firm’s growth. Findings We found that companies that have found ways to keep their business models in a winner’s state can provide clear, evidence-based answers to questions about growth opportunities and risks, while their less successful peers have difficulty addressing the issues. Continuous collecting and analyzing of this information allows successful companies to embrace the strategy-as-learning model of development, built around active learning and proactive adjustment to evolving environment. Practical implications To develop a strategy for moving to and sustaining the Winner state, managers must clearly articulate and test a set of hypotheses about the mechanisms of their company’s growth. The first step on this path is related to obtaining a clear view on the factors that underpin the current financial performance. Originality/value High-performance cultures make sure that each manager has the clear answers to the questions of value, growth and digitization in order to learn, experiment and implement the company business model agenda. The unproductive cultures, on the other hand, are sustained by managerial teams that usually do not have the answers to these crucial questions, but are very good at political games.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a possible framework for extinction accounting which builds on but also extends significantly the existing GRI guidelines relating to species identified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List as under threat of extinction. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyses disclosures relating to rhinoceros conservation and protection produced by top South African-listed companies in order to assess the current state of “extinction accounting”. Following this analysis, the authors explore and discuss a potential framework for extinction accounting which may be used by companies to demonstrate their accountability for species and disclose the ways in which they are working alone, and in partnerships, to prevent species extinction. Findings Corporate disclosures relating to rhinoceros may be interpreted as emancipatory. The authors identify several disclosure themes dealing with rhinoceros in integrated and sustainability reports of large South African companies and on their websites. Contrary to initial expectations, there is evidence to suggest corporate awareness of the importance of addressing the risk of this species becoming extinct. Research limitations/implications The authors have relied on public corporate disclosures and would like to extend the work further to include interview data for a further paper. Practical implications An extinction accounting framework may be applied to corporate accounting and accountability for any species under threat of extinction. The framework may also be considered for use as a tool for institutional investors as well as NGO engagement and dialogue with stakeholder companies. Social implications The rhinoceros has, from the analysis, significant cultural, heritage, eco-tourism and intrinsic value. Developing and implementing an emancipatory extinction accounting framework to prevent extinction will have a substantial social and environmental impact. Originality/value This is the first attempt to the knowledge to explore accounting for extinction and a possible extinction accounting framework. It is also the first attempt to investigate accounting and accountability for the rhinoceros.

Purpose Building information modeling (BIM) is vital in the performance improvement of contracting firms. Thus, there is a need to stimulate its implementation in the construction sector with a view to meeting the competitive demands of the industry. However, there have been very few studies on BIM implementation among contracting firms in Nigeria. Hence, this study aims to examine the current BIM uptake among Nigerian contracting firms, assess the barriers to BIM implementation and examine the ways of improving BIM implementation within these contracting firms. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was conducted on contracting firms (comprising small-, medium- and large-sized firms) in Lagos, Nigeria. The obtained data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. These included percentage, mean score, standard deviation, the Kruskal–Wallis test and factor analysis. Findings This study revealed the current state of BIM implementation among contracting firms in Nigeria in terms of their knowledge of BIM, their usage of BIM as well as the BIM software adopted. Furthermore, the study identified 25 barriers to BIM implementation in contracting firms and identified 15 ways to improve BIM implementation in contracting firms. The relative importance of both the identified barriers and the ways for improving BIM implementation was gauged among contracting firms comprising small-, medium- and large-sized firms. The result of the Kruskal–Wallis test revealed that, except for two (out of 25) identified barriers, and one (out of 15) identified ways of improving BIM implementation in contracting firms, there is no significant statistical difference in the perceptions of the three respondents’ groups. The result of the factor analysis categorized the identified 25 barriers into seven main factors. Practical implications This study provides empirical evidence on the barriers to BIM implementation and the ways of improving its implementation among contracting firms, thereby providing a better insight of the Nigerian construction industry’s BIM environment. Originality/value This study’s findings can positively inform the decisions of construction stakeholders to formulate strategies capable of improving BIM implementation in the construction industry at large.

Purpose This paper aims to examine how libraries can create relative bargaining power and presents a methodology for analyzing collections and preparing for negotiations. Design/methodology/approach A brief literature review of the current state of collection budgets and electronic resource prices is presented prior to proposing a methodology based on business analysis frameworks and techniques. Findings Electronic resource subscription prices are increasing at a rate significantly higher than inflation, while collection budgets grow slowly, remain stagnant or decrease. Academic libraries have the ability to counteract this trend by creating relative bargaining power through organizational efforts that take advantage of size and concentration (e.g. consortia), vertical integration through practices such as library publishing and open access and through individual efforts using information. This paper proposes metrics and methodologies that librarians can use to analyze their collections, set negotiation priorities and prepare for individual resource negotiations to create relative bargaining power. Practical implications The proposed methodology enables librarians and buyers of information resources to harness the information available about their electronic resource collections to better position themselves when entering negotiations with vendors. Originality/value This paper presents metrics, some not commonly used (i.e. average annual price increase/decrease), that aid in understanding price sensitivity. Pareto analysis has been traditionally used to analyze usage, but this paper suggests using it in relation to costs and budgets for setting negotiation priorities.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to create conditions for the correct decision concerning an exchange of the used rope for a new one. A cognitive goal was to indicate the causes of its wear and determining its mechanism reliability and durability. Design/methodology/approach – The magnetic, organoleptic and strength standard tests of lifting triangle-strand ropes of a mining hoist were carried out. This way the current state of the tested rope was defined. Findings – On the basis of an analysis of the results of the performed tests: magnetic, organoleptic and fatigue tests, it can be said that the magnetic one is accurate enough only to indicate the place of the rope’s biggest weakening, though the degree of weakening is not defined precisely – with significant excess. The accurate rope’s destruction degree is indicated by the strength tests. Practical implications – The results of described investigations can improve safety of the mining rope mechanisms operation, even for an increased resource. Originality/value – The elementary wear processes, which are the basic reason for the destruction of the rope, are indicated. Rope destruction is caused mainly by tribological factors: abrasion, corrosion and fatigue wear. Magnetic tests are accurate enough only to indicate the place of the rope’s biggest weakening (qualitative index). Most precisely, the rope’s destruction degree (quantitative index) can be found by the strength tests.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the question: human capital analytics (HR analytics) – are we there yet? It will seek to clarify what is meant by “being there yet” and it will argue that the most positive proponents for this field are way too optimistic about the current state and what impact it will have on HR in the short-to-medium term but that the long-term outlook remain positive for the field. Design/methodology/approach This is a viewpoint paper and the conclusions draw upon the author’s experience in the field. Findings It has been widely acknowledged that HR analytics is still a fairly immature field and has not yet reached its full potential. In this viewpoint, the author argues that the most positive proponents for this field are way too optimistic about the current state and what impact it will have on HR in the short-to-medium term but that the long-term outlook remains positive for the field. The author names four main reasons why HR analytics is still in its infancy: maturity, mindset, organization and competencies. Practical implications If these four aspects are addressed, the HR analytics function will be able to contribute much more to HR’s role as a value generator. Originality/value Focusing on these aspects will set HR analytics up for success and will lead to potentially large shareholder value creation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show the current state of methods for information visualization on wearable devices and demonstrate how these devices and methods can be used to support the work of aircraft maintenance engineers. This paper develops a path to make aircraft maintenance tasks more efficient and safe by providing relevant and important information to maintenance personnel matching the task they are currently working on. Design/methodology/approach The current researchers elaborate prerequisites that wearable computing devices have to meet to use them in aircraft maintenance. Based on these prerequisites the researchers evaluate such existing devices and visualization techniques with regard to how they can be used to visualize information in aircraft maintenance processes. Findings This paper elaborates a roadmap how wearable devices can be applied in future aircraft maintenance scenarios. It also shows that augmented reality (AR) is a technology that shows great potential to support aircraft maintenance staff. The current researchers develop a scenario, how AR applications on wearable devices support such tasks. Practical implications The implementation of the maintenance scenario that is developed in this paper will vastly reduce the possibilities of mistakes by maintenance personnel. This leads to more efficient maintenance processes and further increases the safety of aviation in general. Originality/value Although AR today already is used in fields of application like gaming, an application of this technology in a safety-critical environment is not known to the author. This paper provides a step towards extending the application domains of this technology to aircraft maintenance.

Purpose This paper aims to present a special transformation that is applied to univariable polynomials of an arbitrary order, resulting in the generation of the proposed offset eliminated polynomial. This transform-based approach is used in the analysis and synthesis of temporal arc functions, which are time domain polynomial functions possessing two or more values simultaneously. Using the proposed transform, the submerged values of temporal arcs can also be extracted in measurements. Design/methodology/approach The methodology involves a two-step mathematical procedure in which the proposed transform of the weighted modified derivative of the polynomial is generated, followed by multiplication with a linear or ramp function. The transform introduces a stretching in the temporal or spatial domain depending on the type of variable under consideration, resulting in modifications for parameters such as time derivative and relative velocity. Findings Detailed analysis of various parameters in this modified time domain is performed and results are presented. Additionally, using the proposed methodology, the submerged value of any temporal arc function can also be extracted in measurements, thereby unraveling the temporal arc. Practical implications A typical implementation study with results is also presented for an operational amplifier-based temporal arc-producing square rooting circuit for the extraction of the submerged value of the function. Originality/value The proposed transform-based approach has major applications in extracting the values of temporal arc functions that are submerged in conventional experimental measurements, thereby providing a novel method in unraveling that class of special functions.
