PurposeThis study aimed to develop and validate a health education booklet (Be SAFE booklet) as a guide to improving knowledge, attitude, and practice toward drowning prevention and water safety among parents of primary school children in a local community in Selangor.Design/methodology/approachThis methodological study was conducted in two phases: the development of the content, and validation of the educational material. Booklet development involved content survey and design development. These steps consisted of a content analysis method, information from current literature, document analysis from the stakeholder, and input from parents or guardians and children. The validation by nine panel experts and 15 parents/guardians involved both review, content validity, and face validity.FindingsThe booklet was developed by emphasizing on four main aspects related to drowning prevention and water safety; namely, supervision, alertness, first aid, and education. The assessment rated by the content validity index (CVI), resulted in an I-CVI ranging from 0.78 to 1 and S-CVI of 0.94; the face validity achieved a level of agreement with an average of 94 percent. The results indicated that the Be SAFE booklet was validated and could be considered useful in helping to promote drowning prevention and water safety among primary school pupils' parents.Originality/valueThis article contributed ideas for the concept and aspect of health messages to be incorporated into health education materials for drowning prevention and water safety.

Abstract The present study aimed to assess the relative validity and reliability of a modified Food and Nutrition Literacy (M-FNLIT) questionnaire in primary school children in the city of Mashhad. The study was conducted in four phases. In the first step, the content and face validity of the questionnaire was evaluated by Delphi consensus as well as interviewing the students. Then, construct validity was examined using Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA). The internal consistency and reliability of the questionnaire were also assessed using Cronbach α and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), respectively. Finally, a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to detect the cut-off scores of the M-FNLIT scale. Findings of two rounds of Delphi showed satisfactory levels of Content Validity Ratio (CVR): 0.72 and 0.92, Content Validity Index (CVI): 0.92 and 0.98, respectively. The results of CFA for domains and subscales of M-FNLIT questionnaire including cognitive domain (understanding food and nutrition information and nutritional health knowledge) and skill domain (functional, food choice, interactive, and critical skills) indicated acceptable fit indices. M-FNLIT subscale-specific Cronbach α values ranged between 0.68 to 0.8 and ICC was 0.95 (CI: 0.93-96). The Final questionnaire included 40 items (36 Likert-type and 4 true-false items). FNLIT scores were categorized as low (≤58), medium (>58-<81), and high (≥81). The M-FNLIT questionnaire has a good level of validity and reliability to measure food and nutrition literacy in primary school children. The questionnaire can be applied in the evaluation of nutritional interventions in this age group.

Paedophile is an issue that can cause nightmare to children who have become victims as they are likely to suffer physically and emotionally for the rest of their lives. Paedophile awareness is still generally low among Malaysians, especially children, that a creative and attractive method is required to deliver the crucial message. This research focused on the integration of animated comic and interactive multimedia using storytelling elements to create awareness about paedophile. Scenes embedded with the message are put into comic form to attract children’s attention and increase their understanding. Therefore, this study aims to develop an interactive application, called ‘i-ComPedo’ (Interactive Animated Comic of Paedophile Awareness among Children. The study adapts 3-phases research activities for the research methodology, which are analysis and design, development and testing. In order to evaluate the usability of ‘i-ComPedo’, this study conducted usability that involved primary school children. The usability test revealed that 91.3% of the children perceived ‘i-ComPedo’ as an interesting, understandable, user-friendly courseware. As a conclusion, an interactive animated comic has been developed to offer a new and innovative approach in instilling awareness among children about paedophile.

ABSTRACT The tongue microbiota of elderly adults is composed of two cohabiting commensal groups and their ratios are related to the number of teeth with dental caries experience. In this study, the variation in the tongue microbiota of primary school children and its relationship with the dental caries experience were investigated. We examined the tongue microbiota of 138 children aged 6 to 7 years and 11 to 12 years (61 and 77 children, respectively) who underwent annual dental examinations. The bacterial composition was determined by sequencing the V1-V2 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Cooccurrence network analysis indicated two groups of cohabiting predominant commensals in the tongue microbiota of children. The microbiota in children without a history of dental caries showed significantly higher relative abundances of one of the cohabiting groups, primarily composed of Neisseria subflava, Porphyromonas pasteri, and Fusobacterium periodonticum, compared to that in children with a history of dental caries, which is consistent with that of elderly adults with fewer teeth with dental caries experience. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) further identified Streptococcus oralis subsp. dentisani, belonging to the aforementioned commensal group, as a discriminant species in children without dental caries experience aged 6 to 7 years and 11 to 12 years. Our results describe the tongue microbiota composition of primary school children without history of dental caries and support the possibility that dental caries experience is accompanied by a shift in the tongue microbiota. IMPORTANCE Dental caries is now considered to be caused by acids produced by the overall dental plaque microbiota rather than by specific pathogens. This study focused on the relationship between dental caries experience and the variations in tongue microbiota, which is adjacent but separate from the dental plaque microbiota. Our results demonstrated that the tongue microbiota of primary school children with no history of dental caries experience was composed of predominant commensals with different relative abundances compared to those present in children with dental caries experience, suggesting that dental caries experience is accompanied by a shift in the tongue microbiota. The maintenance of a healthy tongue microbiota may indirectly contribute to the prevention of dental caries.

Up-cycling is a sustainable alternative incorporating the prevalent 3Rs of Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce of used items in campaigns to save the environment. The ‘DIY Art and Craft Activity Module’ is used as a scaffolding tool to enhance environmental awareness and its impact among primary school children through Visual Arts Education. This research utilised the Design Development Research Method (DDR) comprising of three phases namely; Phase 1: Needs Analysis, Phase 2: Design and Development, and Phase 3: Implementation and Evaluation. The data was collected by interviewing Visual Art teachers on the usability of the module and document analysis on the collection of artworks produced by students. Findings of this study demonstrated positive feedback from the teachers and students on the usability of the Junk Art module as supplementary learning material in order to enhance recycling awareness among Primary School students through Visual Art Education.
