Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present empirical evidence about the roles of leaders and how those roles mesh with transformative leadership as a new theory of ethical stewardship. Design/methodology/approach – Statistical methods are implemented to test the associations between specific leadership roles and six transformative leadership perspectives. Data are collected from Likert-type responses from a survey of 399 faculty, staff, and students of a Catholic University in South Florida. Findings – Analysis results indicate that there are significantly positive associations between six leadership perspectives of transformative leadership and the five roles of leadership in the Kouzes and Posner (2012) model. Originality/value – This paper contributes to empirically transformative leadership, a new theory that incorporates six highly regarded leadership perspectives. It provides a framework for understanding the ethical duties of leaders and affirms the importance of those duties as they correlate with Kouzes and Posner’s highly regarded five-role model.

Purpose The task of leading innovation is predominantly pictured as a supportive role vis-à-vis employees. Motivation is a crucial aspect of this task. To better understand the practice of this change-oriented leadership task, the actual behavior and activities of managers are investigated. The purpose of this paper is to reflect through practice and self-reports how this leadership challenge is executed. Design/methodology/approach In this longitudinal multi-method investigation, the service innovation literature constitutes the main theoretical framework. The investigation draws additionally on leadership literature about how to understand leadership through practice. The methodological design facilitated the drawing of causal inferences in the dynamics of service innovation. Findings The investigation enhances our understanding of managers’ particular context of innovation, and particularly the initiation context. It provides empirically grounded descriptions of what managers identify as potential opportunities, and how they take them further in the ideation stage. The results develop the suggestion that leadership roles, and specifically change-oriented roles, are not restricted to initiating or enabling activities related to the employees. Instead the much downplayed leadership role, i.e. the active practice-based involvement in innovation, is theorized as a role that is continuously activated, but tends to be set aside for contingency reasons. Research limitations/implications Further research is needed to assess the importance of managers’ involvement in the practice of innovation, both through systematic mapping of ideas on a larger scale, and through the employee perspective. This paper provides useful insights on managers’ cognition and involvement in innovation for further investigations of innovation management. Practical implications The results provide awareness for managers regarding their diverse leadership roles related to innovation. First, the study embraces heterogeneous ideas that are useful to evaluate and constitute role-modeling. Second, it highlights how managers’ execution of innovation creates awareness about the challenges involved. Finally, but maybe most important, the results alert managers of the discontinuity, even in strategically anchored intentional innovation. Social implications In a changing innovation landscape, individual firms need to draw on other firms to achieve their innovation strategies. In pursuit of this goal, this paper enhances the understanding of the role-modeling leadership task. It is a novel way of guiding individuals that are exposed to new and uncertain innovation contexts, and rethinking how innovation eventually can be achieved. Originality/value While earlier research has identified the multifaceted leadership behavior to support innovation, this paper outlines the contextual conditions and the practice of executing the suggested powerful role of being a role-model for others.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify what is practiced during collaboration exercises and possible facilitators for inter-organisational collaboration. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews with 23 participants from four collaboration exercises in Sweden were carried out during autumn 2011. Interview data were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Findings – Findings indicate that the exercises tend to focus on intra-organisational routines and skills, rather than developing collaboration capacities. What the participants practiced depended on roles and order of arrival at the exercise. Exercises contributed to practicing leadership roles, which was considered essential since crises are unpredictable and require inter-organisational decision making. Originality/value – The results of this study indicate that the ability to identify boundary objects, such as injured/patients, was found to be important in order for collaboration to occur. Furthermore, lessons learned from exercises could benefit from inter-organisational evaluation. By introducing and reinforcing certain elements and distinct aims of the exercise, the proactive function of collaboration exercises can be clarified.

Purpose The purpose of the article is to highlight the importance of sponsorship in the career advancement of women and how it can also promote diversity in leadership. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the PwC’s Breakthrough program illustration to demonstrate how the potential of sponsorship can be leveraged to enhance diversity. Findings Research in leadership, diversity, and inclusion indicates that the leadership gender gap is a major challenge faced by organizations. Most of the organizations employ mentorship as a strategy for women’s career development. However, it is difficult to assess the measurable impact of this on the careers of women and how it could help in improving diversity in leadership roles. The findings suggest that sponsorship, which is an action-oriented strategy can complement mentoring and bring desired results. Originality/value The paper analyses the role of mentoring and sponsorship in the career development of women. The paper also highlights the differences between mentorship and sponsorship. Furthermore, it demonstrates the importance of sponsorship in promoting diversity with the help of PwC’s illustration.

Purpose – The purpose of the article is to review possible new technologies which might enhance a Center for Digital Learning, Teaching and Scholarship at the library. Design/methodology/approach – Opinion piece. Findings – There are several cutting edge but increasingly affordable technologies which could attract students to the library and raise the library’s profile. Research limitations/implications – It would be interesting to design a study of library use and determine if the addition of unusual technologies had any effects. Practical implications – Given the affordability of some devices, there is little risk involved in proceeding with establishment and furnishing of a Center for Digital Learning, Teaching and Scholarship at the library. Originality/value – A literature search for drones and libraries retrieved no scholarly articles, but did bring back one or two news pieces about circulating drones at the University of South Florida.

PurposeIn many companies, executives function as either the analyst or the caregiver. The authors believe there are two more appropriate leadership roles – wizard and warrior.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conclude that the responsibilities of the analyst and the caregiver could often successfully be delegated to managers below C‐level.FindingsToo many managers are repelled or intimidated by either the warrior or wizard role. Managers who are comfortable in the roles of caregivers and or analysts tend to shy away from the possibilities and powers embodied in the wizard and warrior role.Practical implicationsIn fact, great leaders need to be able to assume both mantels – wizard and warrior – and switch between roles as situations demand. It is a skill that managers can learn through persistence and practice.Originality/valueBy understanding these archetypal roles, leaders can embrace their own potential for both courage and imagination, and develop their capacity to face competitors and to find competitive advantage in possibilities that others have not yet seen.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to highlight the leadership route for managers to manage performance appraisal effectively. Design/methodology/approach – This paper outlines the importance of playing down personal feelings about individual employees, getting the best out of high and low performers, appreciating good work, connecting with subordinates, being a role model and making the most of diversity. Findings – This paper contends that performance management systems alone can never bring about optimum performance; they must be accompanied by sensitive and inspired leaders who treat their employees as individuals. Practical implications – Attention is drawn to the importance of converting managers into leaders who can deal easily and comfortably with diversity and the unforeseen. Social implications – Some of the challenges of dealing with the modern, diverse workforce have been highlighted. Originality/value – This paper advances the view that good leadership is a tool to balance structured performance management systems with the flexibility needed to tailor the systems to specific employee needs.

Purpose This study aims to explore an exemplar of the design and application of a systemic framework for higher education. The field of application is in the social sciences and the perspective long-term, covering three generations of faculty and many generations of students. Design/methodology/approach This study is exploratory. It contains a conceptual component and an empirical component with a long-term case study from a European university. Findings A cybersystemic approach to higher education has been shown, at the focal university, to be a powerful amplifier of individual and institutional capabilities, and it still has great potential. The crucial prerequisite is that the approach is virtuously designed and implemented. Originality/value A case study ranging over 50 years is presented. The respective university has been a role model for other educational institutions for many years. Its influence in the German-speaking countries, and more recently also internationally, has become significant.
