Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of leadership programmes on leaders and co-workers, as well as which mechanisms are involved in the process. Design/methodology/approach An analysis was done into 431 free-text answers to questionnaires given to 120 participants in two different leadership programmes and their co-workers six months after their participation, using a grounded theory inspired approach. Findings The result is a model, linking internal psychological and external behavioural aspects, with the central outcome that leaders gained more confidence in their leadership role through theoretical models learned, and reflection. Research limitations/implications The course participants as well as the co-workers seemed to experience a positive leadership development indicating a value of participating in the courses. Practical implications Confidence in leadership role seems important for having positive outcomes of leadership. Although this needs further research, it is something organisations should consider when working with leadership questions. Social implications The co-workers perceived their leaders to be calmer, more open for discussions, and willing both to give and receive feedback post training. There appears to be an increase in trust both in the leader and reciprocally from the leader in the co-workers. Originality/value Until now there has not been any systematic research into the effects on participants and co-workers following the programmes, despite the fact that over 100,000 have participated in the courses.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on a study examining the perceptions of secondary principals, deputies and teachers, of deputy principal (DP) instructional leadership (IL), as well as deputies’ professional learning (PL) needs. Framed within an interpretivist approach, the specific objectives of this study were: to explore the extent to which DPs are perceived as leaders of learning, to examine the actual responsibilities of these DPs and to explore the PL that support DP roles. Design/methodology/approach The researchers used multiple perspective case studies which included semi-structured interviews and key school document analysis. A thematic content analysis facilitated qualitative descriptions and insights from the perspectives of the principals, DPs and teachers of four high-performing secondary schools in Sydney, Australia. Findings The data revealed that deputies performed a huge range of tasks; all the principals were distributing leadership to their deputies to build leadership capacity and supported their PL in a variety of ways. Across three of the case study schools, most deputies were frequently performing as instructional leaders, improving their school’s performance through distributing leadership, team building and goal setting. Deputy PL was largely dependent on principal mentoring and self-initiated but was often ad hoc. Findings add more validity to the importance of principals building the educational leadership of their deputies. Research limitations/implications This study relied upon responses from four case study schools. Further insight into the key issues discussed may require a longitudinal data that describe perceptions from a substantial number of schools in Australia over time. However, studying only four schools allowed for an in-depth investigation. Practical implications The findings from this study have practical implications for system leaders with responsibilities of framing the deputies’ role as emergent educational leaders rather than as administrators and the need for coherent, integrated, consequential and systematic approaches to DP professional development. Further research is required on the effect of deputy IL on school performance. Originality/value There is a dearth of research-based evidence exploring the range of responsibilities of deputies and perceptions of staff about deputies’ IL role and their PL needs. This is the first published New South Wales, Australian DP study and adds to the growing evidence around perceptions of DPs as instructional leaders by providing an Australian perspective on the phenomenon. The paper raises important concerns about the complexity of the DP’s role on the one hand, and on the other hand, the PL that is perceived to be most appropriate for dealing with this complexity.

Purpose This paper aims to outline the prosocial leadership development process for guiding pedagogical and social justice course goals as a means to foster prosocial leadership values within the millennial generation. Design/methodology/approach The paper is guided by a social justice framework and proven classroom pedagogies as a means to align millennial characteristics within the four stages of the prosocial leadership development process. Findings An educational rubric is provided as a means to guide classroom pedagogies, course goals and millennial characteristics through a prosocial leadership development process. Research limitations/implications The paper is conceptual in nature, and therefore, theoretical correspondence remains speculative. Practical implications The research in this paper provided guidelines for educators to use pedagogical practices as a means to develop prosocial values as a basis for organizational leadership behaviors. Social implications This leadership development process when facilitated through proven pedagogical techniques (guided by established social justice curriculum goals) and is within the context of millennial characteristics (those born between the years 1982 and 2005) becomes catalytic in empowering leaders to be a remedy for the world’s environmental and social challenges. Originality/value This paper connects characteristics of millennials to a prosocial leadership development model.

Purpose This paper aims to present a review of articles on business negotiation published between 1995 and 2015. Design/methodology/approach This literature review is based on 490 articles on business negotiation. Findings When analyzing the conceptual underpinnings of this field, two paradigms emerge as dominant. The most prominent paradigm is a cognitive, psychological approach, typically relying on experiments and statistical testing of findings. The second dominating paradigm is a behavioral one, largely concerned with mathematical modeling and game-theoretical models. Practical implications Besides offering a description of the characteristics adhered to the business negotiation field, this paper will also suggest recommendations for further research and specify areas in which the research field needs further conceptual and empirical development. Originality/value This literature review serves to be the first representation of the characteristics adhered to the budding research field of business negotiation.

Purpose Current volatile environments, business complexity, and leadership gaps are compelling organizations to deploy effective leadership development strategies. Fueled by competitive growth and people challenges, efforts continue to scale up but fail to create the desired leaders. This paper aims to address the missing links and calls for new ways of deploying leadership development strategy. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative data on experiential feedback have been collected from participants and stakeholders of leadership development programs in Indian organizations. Findings An integrated six-step approach to leadership development has been proposed for scholars and practitioners. Practical implications From the practitioner’s perspective, this study contributes to the field of leadership development by challenging the relevance of current approaches. It also adds to the scholarly literature on leadership development in the context of the organization and the individual. Originality/value Current studies in the area of leadership development in the Indian context are scarce.

Purpose This case study aims to demonstrate how the Greater Leadership Opportunities for Women (GLOW) Mayo Clinic Employee Resource Groups (MERG) has positively impacted leadership development focusing on growth, resilience, inspiration and tenacity (GRIT) and increased advancement for female leaders at Mayo Clinic. It will also establish how the innovative utilization of employee resource groups can positively impact the development of leaders within an institution in general and specially can enhance behaviors related to GRIT. Design/methodology/approach This case study design was used to measure the impact of the GLOW MERG’s interventions through qualitative and quantitative approaches that highlight both process and outcome to increase study validity through complementarity, which “seeks elaboration, enhancement, illustration, clarification of the results from one method with the results from another” (Greene, et al., 1989, p. 259) as well as completeness and context (Onghena et al., 2019; Schoonenboom and Johnson, 2017; Bryman, 2006). Learning outcomes (knowledge), skill accomplishments and attitude development were evaluated within two weeks after each session and annually through standardized surveys sent to participants via email. The surveys were designed to capture key information about the sessions, including the impact of the session content, the willingness and ability of attendees to apply the learning and identification of opportunities for improvement in session design and delivery, as well as measure satisfaction with the activities offered, the frequency and method(s) of communication, barriers to session attendance and particular topics or speakers of interest to members (Appendix 1). Response options included dichotomous scales, Likert-type scales, multi-select and free text. This provided a voluntary response sampling, as post-session surveys were sent to all session attendees and annual surveys were sent to all GLOW MERG members, which allowed individuals to choose if they would respond to the surveys (Creswell and Creswell, 2018). To foster an environment of continuous improvement, plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles (Langley et al., 2009) were conducted after every survey by the event planning team and the GLOW MERG Board. Interventions were tested, reviewed and discussed during monthly board meetings and event planning. Improvements were made and results were shared with key stakeholders through regular communication channels. Additionally, 30 past and present GLOW MERG leaders were surveyed to measure their perceived impact of participation in the GLOW MERG interventions using dichotomous scales, multi-select and free text responses (Appendix 2). This targeted purposive sample was selected because of their high level of engagement with the MERG to provide a retrospective evaluation of the success of the GLOW MERG, and its interventions for career advancement related to the development of GRIT attributes, knowledge and skills resulting in career advancement for those who are/have been highly engaged with the MERG. Findings The results spanning the past few years of GLOW MERG interventions has shown that the GLOW MERG has been successful in providing targeted educational events that address the GRIT knowledge, skills and attributes, needed for female health-care leaders to be successful in developing GRIT capabilities. By staying true to its mission and vision, the GLOW MERG has been able to promote, educate and empower female leaders at Mayo Clinic while actively breaking down the barriers that can prevent women from obtaining leadership positions. Research limitations/implications There are several limitations with this case study’s data collection and sampling methods. First, the post-session and annual survey sampling was based mainly on ease of access, with responses obtained from respondents who are more likely to volunteer or those with the strongest opinions. This allowed for potential bias as responses may not be representative of all GLOW MERG member opinions. Furthermore, the purposive sample of present and past GLOW MERG leaders was also subject to volunteer bias and may not have be representative of the GLOW MERG population. Additionally, the case study examined the practices of only one site and MERG group and may not be representative of all sites or employee resources groups. Practical implications The interventions implemented by the GLOW MERG to assist women with developing GRIT knowledge, skills and attributes – barriers women often face in leadership roles – were tested, reviewed and discussed during monthly board meetings and event planning. PDSA cycles were conducted, improvements were made and results were shared with key stakeholders through regular communication channels (Langley et al., 2009). Key lessons learned from these assessments include: One size does not fit all for leadership development. GLOW members have a wide variety of backgrounds, skills and experiences. Repetition is important in the development of GRIT knowledge, skills and attributes associated with GRIT. A one-time event provides attendees with an information overview and the steps to start developing a new skill but no dedicated time to practice and implement that skill. Originality/value The innovative utilization of employee resource groups can positively impact the development of leaders within an institution in general and specially can enhance behaviors related to GRIT.

Purpose – The purpose of this conceptual paper is to provide strategies on how to embed physician leadership development efforts within health organizations. Design/methodology/approach – Findings from our previous research, which include an extensive literature review and analysis of 53 interviews with representatives from healthcare organizations across the globe, are integrated within the context of the Influencer© framework to provide a useful and grounded tool for physician leadership development strategies. Findings – Physician leadership development strategies are identified for each of the six domains within the Influencer© framework. Practical implications – A number of physician leadership development strategies are provided. They can be used in combination or used independently. Originality/value – Integrating the knowledge gained from practices in health organizations and from the literature within the Influencer© framework is a unique approach and strengthens the usefulness of the identified physician leadership development strategies.

PurposeThis paper aims to answer whether the notion of the gender and leadership stereotypes theory has already reached its boundaries.Design/methodology/approachTo accomplish such a goal, it relies on the extant literature looking for more robust findings, problems, disruptions and pathways toward building a better understanding of this problematic.FindingsThe evidence gleaned throughout this paper suggests that the interplay between gender and leadership stereotypes theory has reached its boundaries. Moreover, the traditional sex stereotype or gender traits approach within companies seems to be highly limited taking into account that it tends to nurture rivalry and prejudice among people of different genders. Rather than focusing on leader sex approach or egalitarian quotas, in terms of leadership role and despite the fair argument of diversity, the author proposes that it is wiser to concentrate on a meritocratic view.Practical implicationsIt suggests that an androgyny leadership style appears to be welcomed in organizations, yet some shift about this understanding may be occurring. At present, however, female aspirants of leadership roles should work increasingly toward adapting themselves to this profile. In doing so, it is likely that they may be benefited from organizational evaluations in which the merit issue constitutes an imperative.Originality/valueOverall, it is expected to contribute to theory by arguing that the traditional understanding of gender and leadership stereotypes theory is not suitable anymore to deal with the uncertainties and complexities that shape today’s business arenas. On the contrary, it argues that such approach tends only to encourage gender bias and to nurture a somewhat sex war game in detriment of organizations efficiency and productivity.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine two contrasting leadership development methodologies, Reflective Practice and Scharmer’s Theory U. Design/methodology/approach – Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle and Scharmer’s Reflecting Deeply exercise were applied to the same leadership incident on separate days. Findings – Reflective Practice provided helpful insights through focusing on one’s thoughts, feelings and motives during the event, as well as the actions of others and the author’s responses to them. The author found that using Scharmer’s Reflecting Deeply exercise enabled a deeper understanding of the incident to emerge, which also provided new and distinct insights. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation was the case study nature of this exercise; these findings are merely the result of one person’s experiences. Practical implications – To develop rounded leadership skills, leaders can benefit from tapping into all of their resources; these two approaches allow different aspects of one’s intelligence to be accessed, which ought to facilitate greater development. Social implications – Many authors cite a current crisis of leadership, not least of all a perceived failure to tackle the environmental challenges we face. By seeking to develop more intelligent and rounded leaders, leadership itself ought to improve which in turn should help society tackle pressing issues. Originality/value – To the author’s knowledge, a direct comparison of the leadership development methodologies used in this paper has not been previously described. This paper provides useful insights into the practical application of Reflective Practice and Scharmer’s Theory U, which will help inform others seeking to develop as leaders.
