Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to highlight how IT controls enable to improve the control environment assessment and implementation. Findings The analysis indicates that the implementation of the IT controls (IT organizational controls, IT process controls and IT soft variables controls) provides some indications for managers and auditors, who must implement or assess internal control system. A joint use of the three dimensions of IT control contributes to a better assessment of the individual components of the control environment. Practical implications The examination of three IT control dimensions allows managers to expand their knowledge about these types of controls and change the way they approach technology-based processes and associated risks. This improves the understanding of the key aspects connected to the control environment. The paper provides a list of the relevant activities that affect the three types of IT controls. This is useful for managers to begin to frame the specific controls inside the three dimensions of IT control. Originality/value This paper addresses an area of relevance to both practitioners and academics. This analysis focuses on accounting information systems themes and, through the examination of the IT controls, allows a better understanding of the hard and soft elements of the control environment.

Purpose The presence of women is lower than that of men in positions of responsibility in economic management in public administration, although there has been a more significant increase in local administration. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the application and development of the internal control system in local governments improves through the presence of women in positions of management and responsibility in these institutions. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a multivariate model that allows them to verify the predictive capability of their previously defined explanatory variable gender in 1,527 Spanish local governments. They analyze the empirical relation between the gender and internal control system by multivariate regression models. Findings The authors find that the presence of women in management positions in local governments affects internal control system influences as well as a series of financial and non-financial variables. They conclude that in local governments of more than 50,000 inhabitants, the presence of women in the management has a positive influence on internal control systems and also promotes transparency and a more effective fight against corruption, thus enhancing internal control systems. Research limitations/implications The presence of women in positions of management and responsibility in local government will favor a decrease of corruption in local governments and increase their efficiency and transparency. This study can facilitate women’s access to positions of more economic and financial responsibility in public administration, as well as improve the management and efficiency in these institutions. Originality/value This research is novel in that it determines whether the application and development of the internal control system in local governments improves through the presence of women in the position of management and responsibility in these institutions.

As a result, an effective internal control system has a significant impact on the credibility of a modern entity and its activities, which is ensured by the entity’s management, through an appropriate process of evaluating the effectiveness of internal control. On the basis of those exposed, we sustain the opinion shared by many experts in the field, that the primary role in evaluating the internal control system is attributed to internal audit, because in line with current development trends, it supports the entity in maintaining effective controls by evaluating efficiency and effectiveness. As well as by promoting biased business actions. In this connection, the authors approach the study of the basic aspects of the internal control evaluation process in the light of the identification of the method, establishing and interpreting the indicators used in the evaluation, as well as determining the criteria and practical tools for evaluation. As a method of evaluation of internal control the systematic method of authors is proposed, which involves the evaluation of each component of it. This approach permits internal auditors to make an integrated consideration of the effectiveness of internal control in the entity of the internal control system in the good functioning of the entity, which contributes to the fulfillment of its strategic objectives.
